WG: he was using 5 or 6 guitars ! He did a fantastic solo gig, so we decided to start working together, we played for the first time in Nantes in 2008, and then last year once in trio with Keith Rowe. HF: Will, you’re from Melbourne. I’ve heard that there’s a very vivid music scene there. Could you tell a little about it, and also how you think it became that way? WG: yes, it is very vivid, very rich in alternative culture. There are many great musicians and many people organising concerts. Basically in Australia there is nearly NO financial benefit to playing music at all, there is very little funding for music, even for jazz. Even playing commercial music dosen’t earn much money ! So the people involved (musicians and organisers alike) are doing it because they love it, because they beleive in it. Also I feel that different styles of music are much more likely to mix than in other countries I have seen. This I feel is because there aren’t so many ’specific’ venues for specific types of music. So we play the same night as a grindcore band, hiphop acts, noise, improv, freejazz, it is all mixed up. HF: If it’s such a great place, why did you decide to move away? Most musicians chhose to go to Berlin, but you moved to Nantes. Why that, and how is the music scene there? WG: I never wanted to live in Berlin, it’s cheap and lots of musicians, but it is too trendy for me ! I moved to Nantes because my partner is French and she got a job there. In a way I don’t really care where I live, as long as I have a place to work. Having said that I do enjoy living in Nantes, where the scene is pretty small. We organise concerts here of experimental music with an association called CABLE#, and often the people we bring to Nantes to play are completely unknown to the audience, so I enjoy working in a context where I play (and organise concerts) to a public that is not really an ’expert’ or ’educated’ public which actually annoys me when I play in Berlin, or even Paris. It is an opportunity to try to introduce music to people that have never seen or heard things like that. HF: Hvordan tror dere konserten her blir? WG: Ha! No idea, good I hope ! http://www.antboymusic.com/cable http://www.myspace.com/cablenantes
