ABSTRACT
Objectives: Calculate sliding hiatal hernia prevalence in the pacients with erosive
esophagitis, who had done upper gastrointestinal endoscopy at HU-UFSC; and to compare the
mean age, sex proportion and the gravity of esophagitis, beetwen patients with and without
hiatal hernia.
Methods: Observacional and transversal study realised with 460 patients with erosive
esophagitis (by Savary-Miller classification) who had done upper gastrointestinal endoscopy
at HU-UFSC from nov/01/2003 to oct/31/2006; that mensured the prevalence of hiatal hernia,
and compared the mean age, the sex proportion and the gravity of esophagitis beetwen
patients with and without hiatal hernia.
Results: Hiatal hernia prevalence was 43,04% (198 patients). In the patients with hiatal
hernia, the mean age was 54,31 years, versus 47,11 years in the group without hernia
