ABSTRACT: During the sixteenth century, strong cultural links connected Italy and Portugal. In this paper, we try to put one<br />
particular question: what kind of reception did a genre like the <strong>romanzo</strong> (maxime, the works of Boiar<strong>do</strong> and Ariosto) get? The<br />
answer is not a simple one, since that reception, <strong>de</strong>pending on moral or aesthetic criteria, could be either enthusiastic or pru<strong>de</strong>nt,<br />
as we will show by some examples, mainly from the M<strong>em</strong>orial das Proezas da Segunda Tavola Re<strong>do</strong>nda (1567).<br />
