Abstract
Straw bales were first used as a construction material soon after the invention of the baling
machine. The bales proved to be a useful building solution and a provider of a comfortable
living space in several different climatic areas as well as in regions with seismic activity.
Descriptions of straw and straw bale characteristics are included in the diploma work, along
with the history of their utilization, and the most important tests and certificates used to prove
their construction adequacy. Also, basic types of straw bale constructions are explained, as
well as the disadvantages and advantages of construction using straw bales. A few specific
examples of buildings are presented – from very old to the newest, around the world, in
Europe and in Slovenia.
