blood <strong>cancer</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong> most common blood <strong>cancer</strong>s<br />
(also referred to as haematological<br />
malignancies) include leukaemia,<br />
lymphoma and myeloma, but<br />
there are more than 100 types and<br />
related disorders. Every year in the<br />
UK, there are about 12,000 deaths<br />
from blood <strong>cancer</strong> 36 .<br />
Research by the London School <strong>of</strong><br />
Economics and Political Science has<br />
found that people with blood <strong>cancer</strong><br />
are less likely to access specialist<br />
<strong>palliative</strong> <strong>care</strong> than people with other<br />
types <strong>of</strong> <strong>cancer</strong> 37 . This is despite<br />
NICE recommendations for effective<br />
integration between haematooncology<br />
teams and <strong>palliative</strong> <strong>care</strong><br />
services throughout the course <strong>of</strong><br />
a person’s illness, not just when the<br />
terminal phase is acknowledged 38 .<br />
Survey work by the charity Bloodwise<br />
has found that people with blood<br />
<strong>cancer</strong>, and their <strong>care</strong>rs, report feeling<br />
that their <strong>cancer</strong> is different to others in<br />
respect <strong>of</strong>:<br />
• levels <strong>of</strong> awareness in primary <strong>care</strong><br />
settings<br />
• the provision <strong>of</strong> <strong>care</strong> through<br />
haematology units rather than<br />
oncology<br />
• the perceived availability <strong>of</strong> support<br />
services that are directed at their<br />
specific needs 39<br />
This may mean that people miss out on<br />
available support because they do not<br />
feel it is meant for them.<br />
In this section, we highlight people’s<br />
experiences <strong>of</strong> good and bad <strong>care</strong>,<br />
alongside research about the <strong>care</strong> that<br />
