Last Year’s Race Four out of town contenders lined up against eight local stars for the 2015 running of the AP QEII Cup and it was the Australian raider Criterion that started favourite at odds of 2.5 against the horse deemed the best of the home contingent, the defending champion and previous season’s Horse of the Year, Designs On Rome. The race also attracted Japan’s Staphanos, Smoking Sun from France and Britain’s globe-trotting warrior Red Cadeaux. But it was the overlooked outsider Blazing Speed that lifted the famous cup. Tony Cruz’s charge went into the race with two local G1 wins on the board. Those wins were in fact the previous season’s Stewards’ Cup (1600m) and Champions & Chater Cup (2400m), the first and last legs of the Hong Kong Triple Crown series. Throw in a course and distance win in that November’s G2 Jockey Club Cup and the six-year-old’s 14-1 odds started to look generous. But 15.0 was the number on the board when Neil Callan jumped his mount from the gate and settled him a handy sixth in the run, one out from the rail, as Same World set the tempo from Criterion. The Aussie raider and the 2013 winner Military Attack pressed the wilting leader turning for home with Callan breathing down their necks. Shaken up at the 400m mark, Blazing Speed quickened to challenge. At the 200m point the battling bay poked his nose ahead, knuckled down and drew two lengths clear of a blanket finish for the minors. Staphanos ran on for second, just ahead of Criterion, with Designs On Rome a closing but never reaching fourth. “He’s been a champion for me,” said Callan. “I kept him calm and relaxed and from the gate he jumped great. I couldn’t believe it, I landed in my position so early, so quickly, and the rest was just letting him relax, get a rhythm. Tony always says to me ‘just wait for the straight, wait for the straight’ so I counted to 10 and waited for the straight, but when I let him down I thought ‘well he’ll take a bit of getting now’.
