character as evidenced by the existence of port facilities. The settlement, has been identified by the
excavators with the seaport of the ancient city Voura, part of the Ionian Dodecapolis. Among other finds,
there is a strong presence of transport amphorae. We focus to the preliminary study of late Archaic,
Classical and Hellenistic non-Greek and Greek transport amphorae in this settlement. Among them the
presence of a Punic - Western Sicilian amphora provides information about long distance trade in this
part of northwestern Peloponnese and the consumer behavior of the residents. The combination with
other Aegean amphorae and especially the distribution of type B Ionian-Adriatic amphorae in the Punic
West provides information about trade relations with regions as far away as the Panormos in West
Sicily. In this article, suggestions are offered regarding the mechanisms involved in this long-distance
commerce between East and West in a coastal settlement in northwest Peloponnese nearby the
cosmopolitan city of Corinth, the major port in the region.

Exploring the inland: social and economic change in Early Hellenistic Achaea and southern Italy
Archaeological field surveys in Greece and southern Italy have provided new insight into early
Hellenistic settlement dynamics and economic transformations. Although there are some general
trends, the local context of these phenomena should not be underestimated. For example, in many
inland areas a rise in the number of rural settlements can be observed during the Late Classical/Early
Hellenistic period, but the conditions under which rural habitation sites spread in various parts of the
Mediterranean may have been very different from one region to another.
On the basis of archaeological data, especially from field surveys, the talk attempts to contextualize
settlement transformations in rural areas of southern Italy and Achea within local and Mediterranean
transformation processes. According to the analysis presented here, social stratification and
urbanization in scarsely urbanized inland areas were among the main factors for social and economic
change in the Early Hellenistic world.

Εξερευνώντας την ενδοχώρα: κοινωνική και οικονομική αλλαγή στην Πρώιμη Ελληνιστική Αχαΐα και
την Κάτω Ιταλία
Αρχαιολογικές επιφανειακές έρευνες στην Ελλάδα και την Κάτω Ιταλία έριξαν νέο φως στις δυναμικές
και στις οικονομικές μετατροπές στα κέντρα της πρώιμης Ελληνιστικής περιόδου. Αν και υπάρχουν
κάποιες γενικές κατευθύνσεις, το εντόπιο σύνολο αυτών των φαινομένων δεν πρέπει να υποτιμηθεί.
Για παράδειγμα, σε πολλές περιοχές της ενδοχώρας μπορεί να παρατηρηθεί μια αύξηση του αριθμού
των αγροτικών οικισμών κατά την Ύστερη Κλασική/Πρώιμη Ελληνιστική περίοδο, αλλά οι συνθήκες
κατά τις οποίες οι χώροι αγροτικής κατοίκησης διαχέονται σε διάφορα μέρη της Μεσογείου μπορεί να
είναι τελείως διαφορετικές από μια περιοχή στην άλλη.
Σύμφωνα με τα αρχαιολογικά δεδομένα, κυρίως από τις επιφανειακές έρευνες στο πεδίο,
η ανακοίνωση προσπαθεί να αναγάγει σε ένα σύνολο τις μετατροπές οικισμών σε αγροτικές περιοχές
της Κάτω Ιταλίας και της Αχαΐας διαμέσου εντόπιων και μεσογειακών διαδικασιών μετατροπής.
Σύμφωνα με τις αναλύσεις που παρουσιάζονται εδώ, κοινωνική διαστρωμάτωση και εξαστισμός σε
περιοχές της ενδοχώρας με σπάνιες περιπτώσεις εξαστισμού αποτελούν κάποιους από τους κύριους
συντελεστές της κοινωνικής και οικονομικής αλλαγής στον Πρώιμο Ελληνιστικό κόσμο.
