POPULATION STRUCTURE OF THE INHABITANS OF HERCEG-NOVI
MUNICIPALITY FROM THE ASPECT OF ANTHOROPONYMY
DURING THE 19 th AND 20 th CENTURY

The author examined population structure at marriage (nupciality) in the city
and in the villages of commune Herceg-Novi covering period between 1850. and
1989., found 9346 and 18 128 surnames of married couples. It has been analized 1722
and 5039 different surnames, summarized by alphabetical order for the city and 18
village separately. Composed by scientific methodology on surnames (onomastic)
there are 1185 (68,81%) surnamesof our nations in the city and 4498 (89,26%) for the
villages, and 537 (31,19%) and (10,74%) of foreign nations. The largest number of our
surnames begins with the letter M. There are 838 (70,72%) and 3703 (82,33%) our
surnames with suffixes „-vi}” and „-i}” and 347 (29,28%) and 795 (17,67%) with
other suffixes. The highes frequency in this popultion has surnam VUKOVI] (^41).
According to frequency from 1-5 cases there are 1599 (92,86%) in Herceg-Novi. Our
surnames have been dispersed in groups according to formation patronymic (54,79%),
matronymic (4,43%), toponymic (2,34%), according to occupation and title (5,84%)
and critical-catch right on time (32,59%). The larges number of surnames patronymic
and matronymic groups have suffixes „-vi}” and „-i}”. In this population larger number
of surnames sustained period from XVII Century until today, what can be proved
by cadaster book for 1690 year.
