Simona Halep
Current World Number 1 on the WTA tour, with a total of 18
singles titles and 1 doubles title.
Beginnings:
Halep was born in Constanta, on the East coast of Romania.
She started playing tennis at the age of four and was
practicing daily by the time she was 6 years old. At the
age of 16 she relocated to Bucharest to pursue her tennis
dreams and made her WTA circuit debut at the 2009
Paris indoor event. The Romanian broke into the world's
top 100 in 2010, two years later she was established in
the top 50.
Prominence:
Simona Halep’s breakout season was 2013 when
she won six WTA titles. In 2014, Halep reached her
first Grand Slam final at the French Open, losing to
Maria Sharapova, before ending the season ranked
No.3 in the world.
In 2015 Halep rose to world No.2, winning a
further 3 WTA tournaments.
Despite losing to Jelena Ostapenko in the
final of Roland Garos, Halep reached the
WTA world number 1 at the end of 2017.
The following year she finally won her first
Grand Slam title in Paris.
