Star of the Month<br />

Simona Halep<br />

Current World Number 1 on the WTA <strong>to</strong>ur, with a <strong>to</strong>tal of 18<br />

singles titles and 1 doubles title.<br />

Beginnings:<br />

Halep was born in Constanta, on the East coast of Romania.<br />

She started playing tennis at the age of four and was<br />

practicing daily by the time she was 6 years old. At the<br />

age of 16 she relocated <strong>to</strong> Bucharest <strong>to</strong> pursue her tennis<br />

dreams and made her WTA circuit debut at the 2009<br />

Paris indoor event. The Romanian broke in<strong>to</strong> the world's<br />

<strong>to</strong>p 100 in 2010, two years later she was established in<br />

the <strong>to</strong>p 50.<br />

Prominence:<br />

Simona Halep’s breakout season was 2013 when<br />

she won six WTA titles. In 2014, Halep reached her<br />

first Grand Slam final at the French Open, losing <strong>to</strong><br />

Maria Sharapova, before ending the season ranked<br />

No.3 in the world.<br />

In 2015 Halep rose <strong>to</strong> world No.2, winning a<br />

further 3 WTA <strong>to</strong>urnaments.<br />

Despite losing <strong>to</strong> Jelena Ostapenko in the<br />

final of Roland Garos, Halep reached the<br />

WTA world number 1 at the end of 2017.<br />

The following year she finally won her first<br />

Grand Slam title in Paris.<br />
