PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
2020 would have been the 91st Kent County Show. This year, alas, we
were dealt a gloomy blow.
"Any events that have
taken place at all in such a
difficult year is testament
to the tireless dedication
by the staff, members
and volunteers."
Of the many words used to describe COVID-19, ‘uncertainty’ is one we
have all heard too much of. In normal years, it takes twelve months
to plan a County Show. To do so helps minimise these ‘uncertainties’.
One certainty is required, however; that the Showground gates can be
opened to welcome the public. This year, held as we were in the icy
grip of COVID-19, the show could not be hosted.
The Showground has, therefore, been shorn of its usual sources of
income. The mission to adapt, and ensure the charity continues for
another 90 years has been all consuming.
In spite of this adversity, a raft of socially-distanced ideas have been
explored to bring people to the grounds and to bolster the charity’s
coffers. That any events have taken place at all in such a difficult year
is testament to the tireless dedication by the staff, members and
volunteers that underpin the Kent County Agricultural Society.
Undoubtedly next year will still be choppy and planning for events will
remain taxing. But there is a glimmer of light growing brighter by the
day; that events and the public’s confidence in them will return. But if
this year has taught us anything, it is that there is the resolve to ensure
that this Show can, must and shall go on.
