The policy of cheap mass-coating can’t be the future for small- and medium-sized high-tech-companies.
Those who integrate coating in their own production benefit from many advantages such as higher
product quality, more autonomy and reduced costs which result in higher profits.
Small and medium-sized companies who plan on integrating coating in their mechanic manufacturing
can count on an immediate advantage. Job coaters will visit them soon and lower their prices (usually
around 30%) “exclusively” for them. After the visit, two questions will come up immediately:
– Has the job coater been making an extra profit for himself, from my pocket?
– If prices fall this low, does it still make sense to have an own coating center?
The answer for the first question is obvious.
To answer the second question, the mechanical engineer needs to find answers to more questions. This
article tries to summarize these questions and answers in the perspective of small- and medium-sized
enterprises (SMEs).
1. Can SMEs really coat without prior experiences and without
a Ph.D. physicist?
Fig. 1 Integration of coating into the mechanical production process
Yes. Numerous examples of small and medium-sized tool-manufacturers,
regrinders, mold and die makers, injection molders,
machine producers and even of tool traders show that integration
of coating in the mechanical production is state of the art
(Fig. 1, [6], [7]).
2. Can SMEs produce quality-coatings with constant composition,
layer thickness, and color?
• In the own coating-shop the tools aren’t coated together with
foreign tools or even with totally different parts in the same
batch. So the layer thickness, composition and even the choice
of coating doesn’t depend on what are currently running in the
job coating center (Fig. 2).
• For SMEs only compact and flexible coating units can be considered.
These have to be able to produce every coating that is
available on the market.
• At the same time productivity of this compact machine has to
be high, so that up to six different coatings can be deposited in
a day. (Fig. 3).
3. Can SMEs deposit special coatings according to special
applications or even generate own brands with the help of the
own In-House-Coating?
• Yes, e. g. as shown in Fig. 4 and 5.
