Physiological stress: During physiological stress, the dietary requirements<br />

may change. For example during pregnancy, the dietary requirement may<br />

increase.<br />

BALANCED DIET<br />

Balanced diet is one, which contains different types of foods in such quantities and<br />

proportions so that the need for calories, proteins, minerals, vitamins and other<br />

nutrients is adequately met. In addition, a balanced diet should provide dietary<br />

fibre, antioxidants, which have positive health benefits. Generally, a balanced diet<br />

should provide around 60-70% of total calories from carbohydrate, 10-12% from<br />

protein and 20-25% of total calories from fat. This is a general recommendation for<br />

an individual. But depending on the various factors mentioned earlier these might<br />

vary for individual cases.<br />

While planning a balanced diet the food habits of a person is of prime importance.<br />

The balanced diet is based on five food groups.<br />

Five Food Group Systems<br />

There are five basic food groups, which are mentioned below, they provide us<br />

essential nutrients for our daily requirements.<br />

1 Cereal grains and products: e. g.<br />

Rice, Wheat, Ragi, Bajra, Maize,<br />

Jowar, Barley, Rice flakes, wheat flour<br />

2 Pulses and Legumes: e.g.<br />

Bengal gram, Black gram, Green gram,<br />

Red gram, Lentil (whole as well as<br />

dals), Rajmah, Soya bean<br />

3 Milk and Meat Products: e. g.<br />

Milk, Curd, Skimmed Milk, Cheese,<br />

Chicken, Liver, Fish, Egg, Meat<br />

Energy, Protein, Invisible fat,<br />

Vitamin-B, Vitamin-B2, Folic<br />

acid, Iron, Fibre.<br />

Vitamin-B1, Vitamin-B2, Folic<br />

acid, Calcium, Iron, Fibre.<br />
