trente mois ont été nécessaires à la fabrication du plus<br />

grand catamaran <strong>de</strong> croisière en carbone jamais<br />

construit. Les mensurations <strong>de</strong> Lady Barbaretta sont<br />

à la hauteur <strong>de</strong> la complexité <strong>de</strong> la conception à laquelle les<br />

architectes Chenu Presles et Associés, en tout cinq personnes,<br />

ont été confrontés. L’incontournable équation<br />

confort-performance et la recherche du meilleur compromis<br />

poids-puissance ont amené les architectes et le chantier à<br />

faire <strong>de</strong>s choix originaux et innovants.<br />

UNE LADY AUX DIMENSIONS GÉNÉREUSES<br />

Les Constructions Mécaniques <strong>de</strong> Normandie et leur filiale JMV<br />

Industries dirigée par Jean-Marie Vaur, expert en composite, ont<br />

déjà construit <strong>de</strong>s coques en carbone pré imprégné dans leur<br />

autoclave <strong>de</strong> 45 mètres. C’est donc cette même technique carbone<br />

et âme en Nomex, utilisée pour les bateaux <strong>de</strong> course, qui a<br />

été choisie pour construire les coques <strong>de</strong> Lady Barbaretta, ainsi<br />

que les <strong>de</strong>ux bras <strong>de</strong> liaison et la plate-forme. L’important rouf a<br />

également été fabriqué en carbone dans un souci <strong>de</strong> cohérence<br />

et <strong>de</strong> légèreté. Avec ses 32 mètres <strong>de</strong> long et ses 14 mètres <strong>de</strong><br />

large, Lady Barbaretta a nécessité <strong>de</strong> longues étu<strong>de</strong>s et d’interminables<br />

calculs pour régler les problèmes <strong>de</strong> torsion et <strong>de</strong><br />

compression que <strong>de</strong> telles dimensions génèrent. Une fois installés<br />

les moteurs, les aménagements et tous les éléments <strong>de</strong><br />

confort mais aussi <strong>de</strong> sécurité, ainsi que les espars en carbone<br />

construits par Petit Jean Composites, la Lady affiche sur la<br />

balance un poids respectable <strong>de</strong> 65 tonnes.<br />

Sur les catamarans, la recherche <strong>de</strong> vitesse passe par une surface<br />

mouillée réduite ; ce sont donc <strong>de</strong>s coques étroites à la flottaison<br />

qui ont été retenues par les architectes. L’autre facteur <strong>de</strong><br />

vitesse est bien évi<strong>de</strong>mment la surface <strong>de</strong> voiles. Dans ce domaine,<br />

les prétentions et les intentions <strong>de</strong> Lady Barbaretta sont<br />

naturellement éloignées <strong>de</strong> celles <strong>de</strong>s maxi catamarans <strong>de</strong> course<br />

<strong>de</strong> même longueur participant à The Race ou au Trophée Jules<br />

Verne. À bord <strong>de</strong> ce vaisseau, le confort ne doit jamais pâtir <strong>de</strong> la<br />

vitesse mais, comme nous avons pu le constater, elle est bien<br />

réelle. Le mât en carbone <strong>de</strong> 38 mètres pivotant autorise une<br />

grand-voile lattée <strong>de</strong> 400 m 2 et <strong>de</strong>ux voiles d’avant, un génois<br />

Yankee <strong>de</strong> 180 m 2 et une trinquette <strong>de</strong> 100 m 2 . Pour les allures<br />

plus arrivées, un MPS <strong>de</strong> 500 m 2 doit pouvoir amener Lady Barbaretta<br />

à flirter avec les 20 nœuds. Le choix <strong>de</strong>s coques étroites<br />

et profon<strong>de</strong>s dotées <strong>de</strong> dérives sabres coulissantes offre <strong>de</strong><br />

meilleures performances, notamment au près, que <strong>de</strong>s flotteurs<br />

avec ailerons. En outre, le tirant d’eau est plus intéressant, pas


sant <strong>de</strong> 4,50 mètres à 1,80 mètres lorsque la dérive est haute.<br />

Du fait <strong>de</strong> l’étroitesse <strong>de</strong>s coques, les volumes habitables ont été<br />

totalement repensés et c’est à “l’étage”, soit au niveau du pont,<br />

que se trouvent les espaces collectifs, les <strong>de</strong>ux cabines pour<br />

invités et la suite propriétaires. Au milieu <strong>de</strong> la coque tribord,<br />

une troisième cabine pour invités comprend <strong>de</strong>ux couchettes<br />

ainsi qu’une salle <strong>de</strong> bains avec cabine <strong>de</strong> douche. La profon<strong>de</strong>ur<br />

<strong>de</strong>s coques a permis d’installer sous les planchers munis<br />

<strong>de</strong> trappes <strong>de</strong> visite toutes les canalisations et les câblages<br />

nécessaires à la vie à bord. La partie arrière <strong>de</strong>s flotteurs abrite<br />

les <strong>de</strong>ux salles <strong>de</strong>s machines avec les <strong>de</strong>ux moteurs Caterpillar<br />

ainsi que les trois groupes électrogènes et les <strong>de</strong>ux <strong>de</strong>ssalinisateurs.<br />

Dans les fonds, les divers réservoirs peuvent stocker<br />

1,8 tonne d’eau douce, autant d’eaux usées et 7,2 tonnes <strong>de</strong> fuel,<br />

pour une autonomie <strong>de</strong> 1 500 milles.<br />

LE CONFORT SUR TROIS NIVEAUX<br />

Lady Barbaretta, mouillée parallèlement au rivage, présente<br />

un profil d’une hauteur peu courante pour un voilier. L’ensemble<br />

coques et hiloires <strong>de</strong> rouf, tous uniformément<br />

blancs, donne une impression <strong>de</strong> lour<strong>de</strong>ur que quelques<br />

ban<strong>de</strong>s <strong>de</strong> couleur <strong>de</strong>vraient dissiper. Pour l’heure, les <strong>de</strong>rniers<br />

petits soucis inhérents à tout bateau fraîchement mis à<br />

l’eau n’ont pas laissé le temps au décorateur d’œuvrer dans<br />

étaient encore à l’intérieur du bateau et après <strong>de</strong> rapi<strong>de</strong>s<br />

essais préliminaires, le cap a été mis sur Gênes.<br />

En accostant par l’arrière sur l’une <strong>de</strong>s <strong>de</strong>ux plates-formes<br />

recouvertes <strong>de</strong> teck, l’impression se confirme. La hauteur du<br />

franc-bord et du rouf est impressionnante. Du fond <strong>de</strong> la coque<br />

au livet <strong>de</strong> pont, celle-ci avoisine les 4 mètres ; le cockpit <strong>de</strong><br />

manœuvres situé sur le rouf est à 2 mètres au-<strong>de</strong>ssus du pont. Si<br />

<strong>de</strong>s chantiers tels que Perini Navi nous ont habitués à ce type <strong>de</strong><br />

configuration sur <strong>de</strong>s yachts <strong>de</strong> 50 mètres et plus, c’est à ma<br />

connaissance le premier catamaran à usage privé offrant trois<br />

niveaux. À bâbord, le premier niveau à l’intérieur <strong>de</strong>s coques est<br />

réservé à l’équipage. Il est équipé d’une cuisine, d’un coin repas<br />

et <strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>ux cabines. Une autre cabine pour le capitaine est située<br />

dans la coque tribord. Les <strong>de</strong>ux cabines équipage et capitaine<br />

possè<strong>de</strong>nt un accès direct à la timonerie intérieure. Deux autres<br />

<strong>de</strong>scentes <strong>de</strong>sservent l’arrière <strong>de</strong>s coques. De chaque côté <strong>de</strong><br />

l’immense plage arrière, <strong>de</strong>ux grands volumes rectangulaires<br />

tiennent lieu d’hiloires. Larges <strong>de</strong> 2 mètres, ils sont recouverts<br />

<strong>de</strong> matelas : ce sont en fait les garages <strong>de</strong>s <strong>de</strong>ux annexes et du<br />

matériel divers. Le <strong>de</strong>ssus bascule électriquement et un bout<br />

sortant <strong>de</strong> la bôme est utilisé pour hisser les annexes. Un jet<br />

trouve également sa place dans l’extrémité arrière <strong>de</strong> la coque<br />

bâbord. La plage arrière entourée <strong>de</strong> banquettes est protégée<br />

par un Bimini repliable avec, à bâbord, une table pour les repas,<br />

et à tribord, un coin salon. Les baies vitrées coulissantes s’ouvrent<br />

sur le mon<strong>de</strong> intérieur <strong>de</strong> Lady Barbaretta.<br />

Les plus grands yachts à moteur bénéficient rarement d’une telle<br />

largeur et d’une telle perspective. Ce sentiment d’espace est<br />

accentué par la hauteur généreuse et l’utilisation <strong>de</strong> bois clairs.<br />

Ainsi, en regardant vers l’avant <strong>de</strong>puis le centre du salon bar, la<br />

large coursive offre une vue sur la timonerie et les panneaux<br />

vitrés, permettant un étonnant débouché visuel jusqu’aux<br />

étraves, voire bien au-<strong>de</strong>là. Cette coursive offre <strong>de</strong>ux passages<br />

qui sont séparés par le bahut vaisselier recouvert d’un plateau<br />

<strong>de</strong> table amovible afin <strong>de</strong> disposer d’une salle à manger intérieure.<br />

À l’avant <strong>de</strong> ce meuble, la <strong>de</strong>scente aux marches en carbone<br />

Kevlar et teck mène au cockpit <strong>de</strong> barre et <strong>de</strong> manœuvres situé<br />

sur le pont supérieur. Deux épontilles en carbone au pied <strong>de</strong> la<br />

<strong>de</strong>scente ainsi que le plateau <strong>de</strong> bar en forme <strong>de</strong> safran, également<br />

en carbone, rappellent que 20 tonnes <strong>de</strong> ce tissu imprégné<br />

ont été nécessaires à la construction du bateau. Ici, son tissage<br />

noir et brillant se marie subtilement avec le bambou massif <strong>de</strong>s<br />

parquets et le bambou tressé utilisé en paroi dans les cabines.<br />

Les parois donnant sur la coursive et l’ensemble du salon sont


en érable canadien. Les <strong>de</strong>ux cabines à bâbord et la suite propriétaires<br />

à tribord sont traitées dans les mêmes essences et les<br />

mêmes teintes. Si l’extrême confort et le raffinement sont présents<br />

dans les chambres et les salles <strong>de</strong> bains, le luxe n’y est pas<br />

tapageur. Les hublots rectangulaires laissent entrer la lumière<br />

naturelle que l’on peut tamiser à l’ai<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong> persiennes électriques<br />

“à l’italienne”. Si un panneau <strong>de</strong> pont ouvrant permet<br />

d’aérer les cabines, elles bénéficient en outre <strong>de</strong> la climatisation.<br />

Enfin, celles-ci sont équipées <strong>de</strong> leur propre système audiovisuel/lecteur<br />

DVD et du téléphone, pour les communications <strong>de</strong><br />

cabine à cabine ou vers l’extérieur.<br />

À l’avant <strong>de</strong> cette plate-forme <strong>de</strong> 140 m 2 , la timonerie occupe<br />

toute la largeur, ce qui a permis d’installer à bâbord une banquette<br />

et à tribord une petite table bureau. Deux sièges<br />

mo<strong>de</strong>rnes en cuir clair font face aux tableaux <strong>de</strong> comman<strong>de</strong> et à<br />

l’électronique. La barre à roue est ici remplacée par un joystick et<br />

un écran moniteur permet d’avoir en permanence sous les yeux<br />

certains points du bateau comme la salle <strong>de</strong>s machines ou le<br />

cockpit <strong>de</strong> manœuvres. Deux portes étanches permettent à<br />

l’équipage <strong>de</strong> circuler sans déranger la quiétu<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>s passagers.<br />

Devant les pieds du barreur, <strong>de</strong>ux panneaux permettent <strong>de</strong> voir<br />

l’enroulement <strong>de</strong>s chaînes qui passent par une poulie pour<br />

rejoindre les <strong>de</strong>ux guin<strong>de</strong>aux installés dans chaque coque. Cette<br />

disposition permet <strong>de</strong> placer le poids <strong>de</strong>s <strong>de</strong>ux mouillages au<br />

fond <strong>de</strong> chaque coque en arrière <strong>de</strong>s soutes à voiles.<br />

LE LUXE N’EXCLUT PAS LA VITESSE<br />

Une fois l’ancre à poste, le capitaine rejoint l’équipage dans le<br />

cockpit <strong>de</strong> manœuvres, quelques marches plus haut. À ce<br />

niveau, la vue est imprenable sur l’ensemble du bateau. Les<br />

<strong>de</strong>ux postes <strong>de</strong> barre largement décalés offrent au barreur une<br />

totale visibilité lors <strong>de</strong>s manœuvres du port et d’accostage. Ils<br />

sont tous les <strong>de</strong>ux équipés à l’i<strong>de</strong>ntique ce qui permet, une fois<br />

les voiles hissées et déroulées, à un homme seul <strong>de</strong> régler et<br />

contrôler le bateau, <strong>de</strong> bor<strong>de</strong>r et choquer les voiles, <strong>de</strong> régler la<br />

hauteur <strong>de</strong>s dérives ou bien sûr, <strong>de</strong> naviguer au moteur.<br />

Sous un ciel qualifié <strong>de</strong> “cherbourgeois” par les équipiers natifs<br />

du Cotentin, nous mettons bout au vent pour hisser la grandvoile.<br />

Au-<strong>de</strong>ssus <strong>de</strong> nos têtes, l’énorme bôme en carbone laqué<br />

blanc est, dans sa plus gran<strong>de</strong> largeur, <strong>de</strong> la taille d’une baignoire<br />

dans laquelle se loge la grand-voile lattée confectionnée par<br />

Doyle. Les winches Lewmar au pied <strong>de</strong> mât et les hiloires du<br />

cockpit sont commandés par <strong>de</strong>s boutons au sol. Les enrouleurs<br />

hydrauliques Reckman <strong>de</strong>s voiles d’avant sont actionnés <strong>de</strong> la<br />

même manière. Sous le vent <strong>de</strong>s îles <strong>de</strong> Lérins, un bord <strong>de</strong> travers<br />

sur mer plate met tout <strong>de</strong> suite en évi<strong>de</strong>nce le potentiel <strong>de</strong><br />

vitesse <strong>de</strong> ces coques. Telle une limousine, le bateau accélère<br />

progressivement et le speedomètre annonce <strong>de</strong>s pointes à 14<br />

nœuds sous Yankee et grand-voile haute. À cette allure, on peut<br />

regretter l’absence <strong>de</strong> hale bas qui empêcherait la bôme <strong>de</strong><br />

monter exagérément et la grand-voile <strong>de</strong> trop ouvrir. Pour la<br />

régler, pas <strong>de</strong> rail non plus, mais, <strong>de</strong> chaque côté, un brin en bout<br />

<strong>de</strong> bôme qui passe par une poulie sur l’arrière du rouf et revient<br />

au winch sur l’hiloire. Passé l’abri <strong>de</strong>s îles, la mer courte se creuse<br />

pour atteindre un mètre environ. Installés à quelque 6 mètres<br />

au-<strong>de</strong>ssus <strong>de</strong> l‘eau, notre appréciation du phénomène ne peut<br />

être qu’approximative car la douceur du passage <strong>de</strong>s coques<br />

dans la mer ne perturbe guère l’équilibre. Les étraves fen<strong>de</strong>nt les<br />

vagues sans jamais plonger dans les creux. Cette attitu<strong>de</strong> est<br />

due à la bonne répartition du creux <strong>de</strong>s coques et à l’absence <strong>de</strong><br />

poids dans le tiers avant. Les voiles bordées, nous entamons un<br />

bord <strong>de</strong> près alors que le vent s’établit à près <strong>de</strong> 15 nœuds. Sans<br />

tangage, le bateau taille imperturbablement sa route à 11/12<br />

nœuds. En vue du virement <strong>de</strong> bord, le grand Yankee est enroulé<br />

et la trinquette auto vireuse prend le relais. Le virement s’effectue<br />

avec la lenteur propre aux grands multicoques <strong>de</strong> croisière,<br />

mais, passé le lit du vent, la vitesse remonte progressivement. À<br />

l’intérieur, pas <strong>de</strong> mouvement brusque non plus. Les oscillations<br />

au passage <strong>de</strong>s vagues sont lentes et faciles à anticiper malgré<br />

le peu <strong>de</strong> mains-courantes. Cette absence <strong>de</strong> sensation est


aussi surprenante que la vitesse dont témoignent les sillages.<br />

Dans le marché en pleine expansion du yacht <strong>de</strong> luxe, les habitués<br />

<strong>de</strong>s palaces et <strong>de</strong>s somptueuses <strong>de</strong>meures recherchent<br />

sur la mer les mêmes conditions <strong>de</strong> vie qu’à terre. Les yachts à<br />

moteur étaient, jusqu’à ce jour, les seuls à même <strong>de</strong> leur fournir<br />

ce type <strong>de</strong> prestations alliant la stabilité, l’espace, l’indépendance<br />

d’une gran<strong>de</strong> cabine et la vitesse. L’arrivée <strong>de</strong> Lady<br />

Barbaretta risque <strong>de</strong> bousculer bon nombre d’idées reçues<br />

concernant l’impossibilité <strong>de</strong> naviguer dans un confort extrême<br />

à la voile sans en subir les affres. Quelques grands monocoques<br />

mo<strong>de</strong>rnes sillonnent les mers pour le plus grand bonheur<br />

<strong>de</strong> leurs propriétaires épris <strong>de</strong> voile, mais, en termes <strong>de</strong><br />

stabilité horizontale, le catamaran <strong>de</strong>meure la référence. Le<br />

concept présenté par Lady Barbaretta vient à point nommé<br />

combler le fossé entre tous ceux qui aiment naviguer pour <strong>de</strong>s<br />

raisons et dans <strong>de</strong>s conditions différentes. Alliant la stabilité à<br />

la surface habitable, il permet aux architectes d’envisager et<br />

<strong>de</strong> créer, comme c’est ici le cas, une nouvelle génération <strong>de</strong><br />

yachts où le luxe n’exclut pas la vitesse. Lady Barbaretta s’annonce<br />

comme un pionnier et apporte la preuve que la navigation<br />

hauturière rapi<strong>de</strong> et dans le plus grand confort peut s’envisager<br />

sans faire appel au camion-citerne. En construisant le<br />

plus grand catamaran <strong>de</strong> croisière en composite, CMN<br />

démontre sa capacité à maîtriser la construction navale dans<br />

tous les domaines et tous les matériaux. ●<br />

Il <strong>de</strong>stino spesso riserva strane sorprese. Chissà<br />

quali mari avrebbe solcato se questo tecnologico<br />

catamarano di 32 metri fosse stato consegnato<br />

nelle mani <strong>de</strong>l facoltoso uomo d’affari<br />

francese, che nel 1999 lo commissionò a Chenus<br />

Presles et Associates (CPA), uno studio parigino<br />

esperto nella progettazione di scafi da regata. La<br />

costruzione iniziò nel 2000 presso il cantiere<br />

CMN du Cherbourg che con la recente acquisizione<br />

<strong>de</strong>lla JMVI non aveva rivali nella realizzazione<br />

di veloci catamarani in composito. Ma<br />

“Monsieur X” a lavori quasi ultimati non poté più<br />

affrontare i costi. Splendi<strong>de</strong> linee d’acqua,<br />

materiali all’avanguardia (fibra di carbonio per<br />

scafi, albero e boma), tecnologia <strong>de</strong>ll’ultima<br />

generazione e il particolare layout <strong>de</strong>gli interni<br />

<strong>de</strong>llo yacht però hanno letteralmente affascinato<br />

un altro businessman te<strong>de</strong>sco, peraltro in cerca<br />

di un’imbarcazione dalle simili caratteristiche.<br />

Così il <strong>de</strong>stino ha voluto che Lady Barbaretta<br />

(questo il nome) solchi i mari <strong>de</strong>l Mediterraneo<br />

e <strong>de</strong>i Caraibi, dando piacere al proprio armatore<br />

e a coloro che <strong>de</strong>si<strong>de</strong>rano fare una crociera a<br />

bordo di uno yacht veloce (25 nodi sotto vela),<br />

estremamente confortevole e ricco di toys (tra<br />

Who knows what would have become of<br />

this high-tech 32-metre catamaran if she had<br />

been <strong>de</strong>livered to the wealthy French<br />

businessman who commissioned her back in<br />

1999 from Chenus Presles et Associates<br />

(CPA), a Paris-based studio which specialises<br />

in racing hulls. Work started on the new<br />

craft in 2000 at the CMN yard at Cherbourg,<br />

the fast composite cat buil<strong>de</strong>r par<br />

excellence thanks to its acquisition of JMVI.<br />

But just as the build was in its final stages, it<br />

emerged that “Mr. X” would not be able to<br />

pay the bill. Happily, however, the splendid<br />

waterlines, avant-gar<strong>de</strong> construction<br />

materials (carbon fibre for the hulls, mast<br />

and boom), new generation technologies<br />

and unique layout of the new beauty<br />

caught the eye and heart of a German<br />

businessman in search of something similar.<br />

And so Lady Barbaretta now sails the<br />

Lady Barbaretta splashed in February of this<br />

year and is now available for charter from<br />

Nigel Burgess. Her unusual interior layout<br />

makes her i<strong>de</strong>al for the market. Her focal<br />

<strong>de</strong>l layout di Lady Barbaretta si nota soprattutto<br />

nella disposizione <strong>de</strong>lle cabine. Invece di<br />

distribuirle negli scafi laterali, sacrificando gli<br />

ambienti, lo studio parigino CPA ha pensato di<br />

posizionare tre cabine principali sul main <strong>de</strong>ck.<br />

Una soluzione che ha permesso di creare una<br />

spaziosa suite armatoriale e due cabine Vip<br />

(convertibili entrambe in matrimoniali o doppie),<br />

ciascuna illuminata dalla luce naturale che<br />

filtra attraverso grandi finestrature. Quella padronale,<br />

a dritta, alla quale si acce<strong>de</strong> sia dal corridoio<br />

centrale sia dall’office ricavato nella<br />

pilothouse, dispone di un letto king-size, fronteggiato<br />

da una gran<strong>de</strong> tv al plasma, e di un<br />

ampio bagno con doccia multifunzione e due<br />

mo<strong>de</strong>rni lavandini in vetro satinato. La pavimentazione,<br />

sempre affidata a bamboo laminato<br />

(essenza che compare anche nelle testatine <strong>de</strong>i<br />

letti), ben si armonizza con i mobili realizzati in<br />

sandwich di schiuma e rifiniti in maple cana<strong>de</strong>se<br />

(realizzati dalla francese James), caratteristica<br />

che ricorre come un fil rouge in tutta la zona notte,<br />

point is a stunning full beam <strong>de</strong>ck saloon<br />

<strong>de</strong>ckhouse with bamboo flooring. It is<br />

divi<strong>de</strong>d into two sections: the conversation<br />

area with sofas, armchairs and a large<br />

plasma TV, and a separate bar with a 12seater<br />

table that tucks away in a special<br />

compartment in the central corridor, leaving<br />

lots of space for the guests. However, Lady<br />

Barbaretta really comes into her own in the<br />

cabin layout. Rather than squashing them<br />

into the si<strong>de</strong> hulls, CPA put all three main<br />

staterooms on the main <strong>de</strong>ck to create a<br />

roomy master suite, two VIP cabins (both<br />

convertible into a double or twin), all<br />

won<strong>de</strong>rfully bright and airy thanks to large<br />

picture windows. The starboard master suite<br />

is accessed both via the central corridor<br />

and the office in the pilothouse. It boasts a<br />

king-size bed facing a flat screen TV, and a<br />

large bathroom with a multifunctional<br />

shower and two sand-blasted glass handbasins.<br />

The flooring here is also in laminated<br />

bamboo which blends in very well with the<br />

foam-cored sandwich furnishings veneered<br />

in Canadian maple (by James of France),<br />

a very relaxing effect. The use of natural<br />

materials is even evi<strong>de</strong>nt in the onboard<br />

linens, all of which are by Heirlooms of<br />

England, that were personally chosen by the<br />

owner and are embroi<strong>de</strong>red with the Lady<br />

Barbaretta logo of a mermaid. There is<br />

also a smaller yet very pleasant fourth guest<br />

stateroom featuring one regular and one<br />

small single bed. This is situated forward in<br />

the starboard hull which, along with the<br />

port one, also houses the crew quarters<br />

for five.<br />

A whole range of light sources has been<br />

used to create the onboard lighting.<br />

Starting, of course, with natural light,<br />

courtesy of the big rectangular windows<br />

along the bulkheads of the central cell. This<br />

is enhanced by the gleaming white ceilings,<br />

polished parquet and pale maple panelling.<br />

Adjustable spots highlight certain <strong>de</strong>tails<br />

and a host of crystal lamps help create cosy,<br />

intimate corners, perfect for a little<br />

relaxation.<br />

both Lady Barbaretta’s hulls open out to<br />

create two sea-level platforms: the port one<br />

is used to stow the jet ski and prepare the<br />

diving gear, while the starboard has a swim<br />

lad<strong>de</strong>r. It is little <strong>de</strong>tails such as these, of<br />

course, which give a touch of exclusivity and<br />

functionality to what could also be<br />

<strong>de</strong>scribed as a pure <strong>de</strong>sign object.<br />

This 32-metre high-speed cruising catamaran is, by any stretch of<br />

imagination, vast. The top of her mast was almost at eye level as we<br />

berthed alongsi<strong>de</strong> the adjacent dock, and I was standing on the bridge<br />

of a P&O ferry manoeuvring into the port of Cherbourg.<br />

It is not just her size that makes Lady Barbaretta stand out from the<br />

crowd; in<strong>de</strong>ed her naval architects, CPA, based in Paris, claim she is<br />

the largest cruising catamaran ever built out of carbon fibre. This alone<br />

makes her impressive, but it is not until you stand on the huge expanse<br />

of <strong>de</strong>ck that you fully realise how huge a 14-metre beam on a 32-metre<br />

yacht truly is.<br />

Conceived originally for an owner who was not able to complete her,<br />

this project was inherited by her current owner midway through the<br />

construction period at the CMN facility at Cherbourg. Little change<br />

has been ma<strong>de</strong> to her original specification, which dictated a yacht of<br />

no more than 70 tonnes displacement with a speed un<strong>de</strong>r sail of<br />

around 20+ knots. It was these critical requirements that gave birth<br />

to her high-tech construction and sailing capabilities.<br />

The exceptional mechanical characteristics of carbon fibre have been<br />

put to good use by CMN, her Cherbourg-based buil<strong>de</strong>rs. The hulls and<br />

superstructure have been constructed by sandwiching a honeycomb<br />

Nomex core between carbon epoxy layers, which is heat-treated and<br />

vacuum-bagged. This process was felt essential in her <strong>de</strong>signer’s<br />

quest to find the best compromise between comfort and<br />

performance, the dominating factor here being the power-to-weight<br />

ratio. Titanium became the metal of choice of stanchions, rails and<br />

bimini supports for much the same reason, and the use of teak for<br />

<strong>de</strong>cking and cap rails was reduced to a minimum to save weight.<br />

However, the visual appearance of the finished product is stunning.<br />

Catamarans with slim halls move through the water faster than those<br />

with a chunky profile and it was for this reason that CMN and CPA<br />

opted for fine hulls at the water line even though this was at the<br />

expense of crew living accommodation. The <strong>de</strong>pth of the hulls was


exten<strong>de</strong>d as a result, but since the hulls have no fixed keels the<br />

yacht’s harbour draft can be reduced to 1.4 metres by lifting both her<br />

dagger boards, leaving the rud<strong>de</strong>r skegs and propellers as the lowest<br />

fixed points. Her captain, Pierre Colin, prefers to leave the boards<br />

down at 1.8 metres to avoid damage.<br />

Other weight-saving i<strong>de</strong>as incorporated into the <strong>de</strong>sign of the yacht<br />

inclu<strong>de</strong> stairways constructed out of carbon, kevlar and teak, the use<br />

of bamboo as interior <strong>de</strong>cking, the use of modular beds that do not<br />

inclu<strong>de</strong> storage un<strong>de</strong>rneath, and hanging wardrobes ma<strong>de</strong> of leather<br />

instead of wood. The themes of bamboo and leather have been<br />

continued throughout the <strong>de</strong>sign of the interior spaces. This gives a<br />

mo<strong>de</strong>rn, light and airy feel to the yacht where passenger comfort has<br />

not been compromised in an effort to save weight.<br />

Her enclosed wheelhouse bridge is massive at 10 metres wi<strong>de</strong> and is<br />

so huge that large areas of its forward bulkhead remain unused, giving<br />

it a somewhat spartan appearance. Two command chairs dominate<br />

the amidship’s conning position and instrumentation is confined to just<br />

two flat screens in front of the captain. There is no wheel and all<br />

controls are minimalist. The bridge is <strong>de</strong>signed so that from the<br />

central position the captain can see both anchors through glass<br />

hatches set into the <strong>de</strong>ck and can also, from this position at the helm,<br />

let both go and set the cordage mooring yoke which runs between<br />

both bows and is permanently attached to the anchor chain.<br />

Accommodated on the bridge, to port, is a full GMDSS<br />

communications centre come ship’s office, whilst to starboard, the<br />

owner has an open-plan office also built into the bridge and linked to<br />

his suite immediately behind it.<br />

One <strong>de</strong>ck above, the vast expanse of <strong>de</strong>ck is dominated by twin helm<br />

stations, with traditional hands-on steering, ai<strong>de</strong>d by computerised<br />

sail-handling controls. Her sailing qualities seem well optimised, with<br />

dagger boards that can be in<strong>de</strong>pen<strong>de</strong>ntly left at any <strong>de</strong>signated<br />

height. Her huge wing mast rotates 65 <strong>de</strong>grees either si<strong>de</strong> of<br />

midships, mimicking the <strong>de</strong>signs of large multi-hull racing craft. Her<br />

fully battened mainsail drops onto an ultra-wi<strong>de</strong> boom that feels more<br />

like a roof when standing un<strong>de</strong>rneath it. Her twin head sails offer the<br />

flexibility achieved with the roller furling. Seven hydraulic winches for<br />

sail handling leave the area uncluttered. Huge tidy bins besi<strong>de</strong> them<br />

provi<strong>de</strong> storage for sheets and halyards, and it is clear that in fine<br />

weather this control <strong>de</strong>ck will be the focal point of passengers and<br />

crew alike. Clever teak-slatted seats fold flat to accommodate<br />

sunbathers, yet her full complement of eight passengers can all sit in<br />

comfort and watch the captain at the helm. Her mast features just one<br />

set of sprea<strong>de</strong>rs, well swept back; these are ball- and socket-jointed<br />

into the trailing edge of the mast to accommodate its rotation without<br />

the need of additional stays or runners. Needless to say, this lack of<br />

encumbrance allows her high-efficiency mainsail to carry a significant<br />

roach. A flying, fore-guy boom down-haul is served by a hydraulic ram<br />

and this unusual feature will certainly allow her captain easily to fine<br />

tune his 300-square-metre mainsail when he comes off the wind.<br />

Aft of this area, and down one <strong>de</strong>ck, are two pods, one on either si<strong>de</strong><br />

garaging the yacht’s ten<strong>de</strong>rs, which are loa<strong>de</strong>d and discharged using<br />

the boom as a crane. A third garage in the after-end of the port hull<br />

houses a jet ski, whilst the same area on the starboard si<strong>de</strong> unfolds to<br />

produce a teak swim platform.<br />

Her gleaming white <strong>de</strong>ckhouse features distinctive louvres on the<br />

portholes, which are both <strong>de</strong>corative and highly functional. To save<br />

weight the yacht is only partially air-conditioned and these clever<br />

louvres are part of the sophisticated system of shading and cooling,<br />

activated by computers to ensure the heat of the sun is not<br />

transmitted through the glass into the interior.<br />

The words "huge" and "vast" have been used several times in writing<br />

this report, but neither word can be used to <strong>de</strong>scribe the working<br />

areas of the yacht. These have all been cleverly shoehorned into the<br />

hulls and become the domain of her small crew of five. By "small", I<br />

also mean that the crew cannot be tall or plump. At six feet tall, I<br />

could not see out of the bridge windows without stooping, nor could I<br />

fit into the double bed in the captain’s cabin. I would not get much<br />

sleep there anyway, because the same space has no doors, and<br />

behind the steps leading into it is one of the yacht’s two watermakers.<br />

The other three crew share the two remaining intercommunicating<br />

cabins and single bathroom in the other hull. All crew<br />

accommodation is interlinked to accommodate the need to traverse<br />

one end of the hull to the other. It is clear from looking at the crew<br />

accommodation, with its lack of privacy, coupled with small galley,<br />

tiny laundry and minute mess area, that the <strong>de</strong>signers belong to that<br />

school of thought which suggests that professional crew working on<br />

sailing yachts do so for the excitement of the life rather than for the<br />

comforts of home.<br />

The twin engine rooms each house a Caterpillar 3126B six-cylin<strong>de</strong>r<br />

engine, each 425 hp. Power is transferred to twin 800-mm three-bla<strong>de</strong>,<br />

furling Max Props through the ZF gearboxes. In each same tiny space a<br />

17.5 kW Onan generator <strong>de</strong>livers power from a space so small that it<br />

left me won<strong>de</strong>ring how an engineer could ever gain access to any<br />

machine for routine maintenance. Elsewhere, a 7 kW Onan generator<br />

serves as an emergency generator.<br />

A month or so after our initial viewing in Cherbourg we met up with<br />

Lady Barbaretta again at the Genoa Charter Show. In boatshow mo<strong>de</strong><br />

she looked more suited to the charter market and her cheerful French<br />

crew were enthusiastic about their trip to the Mediterranean. Pierre<br />

<strong>de</strong>scribed the yacht un<strong>de</strong>r sail as light and flighty, with a sensational<br />

feeling of speed which at times topped 18 knots. Other crew told me<br />

that they were sad that they only managed to sail for four days out of<br />

the ten-day trip, which inclu<strong>de</strong>d a refuelling stop in Ibiza<br />

Lady Barbaretta will provi<strong>de</strong> thrilling charter opportunities through the<br />

offices of Nigel Burgess from US$45,500 per week and will, I am sure,<br />

provi<strong>de</strong> a great <strong>de</strong>al of fun in the sun and excitement on the wind. She<br />

flies the flag of Luxembourg and is built to be classed by Bureau Veritas.<br />
