CORK LGBT WEEK
CELEBRATING LGBT HISTORY
Cork LGBT Awareness Week is organised to acknowledge and demonstrate
that LGBT individuals are family members, community residents, constituents,
citizens, visitors, service users and service providers. The purpose of the
week is to advance Objective 86: “The gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender
communities will be enabled to fully participate in the social, cultural and
economic life of Cork City.”
Like everyone else we are reflecting on history this year and our Interagency
Week will celebrate and commemorate the LGBT engagement with the state
and with the city. Following in the footprints of LGBT patriots to contemporary
LGBT Activism we will demonstrate the contribution of LGBT citizens to
creating a Republic of Equals.
Just as equality affects us all, equally homophobia and transphobia impacts
us all, so in 2016, to borrow from the Proclamation, we declare that Irishmen
and Irishwomen and those of all sexual orientations should be “cherished
equally”. “The Republic guarantees religious and civil liberty, equal rights and
equal opportunities to all its citizens” A republic that determined that the State
should be “oblivious” of difference and seek to uphold the rights of minorities
as well as the majority. One hundred years on we still aspire to create that
Republic of equals.
