This course will address techniques for assessing suspects through knowledge of interview<br />

techniques, body language <strong>and</strong> eye patterns. At the conclusion of this course, the student<br />

will be able to apply successful conversational techniques to detect deception or<br />

truthfulness in an individual.<br />

Course objectives include: Identify interview techniques to maximize officer safety,<br />

Develop a basic underst<strong>and</strong>ing of non-verbal communication, Identify the difference<br />

between an interview <strong>and</strong> interrogation, Identify rapidly changing legal circumstances<br />

during roadside interviews, Identify the 5 phases of the interview process, Identify<br />

elements of active listening, Identify common interviewing mistakes, Describe strategies<br />

to set up a controlled environment <strong>and</strong> Practice conversational interview techniques.<br />

Overview of Topics include: The Basics of Citizen Encounters, Legal Issues, The <strong>Interview</strong>,<br />

Eye Accessing, Questioning <strong>Techniques</strong>, Deceptive Subjects <strong>and</strong> The Setting. POST<br />

HARLIN, GREGORY<br />

Mr. Gregory Harlin is currently with the Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation of New York State <strong>and</strong> is the<br />

President <strong>and</strong> CEO of Murlin Consultants in Glenham, New York. Mr. Harlin began his career in 1973 as a<br />

Patrolman for the City Beacon Police Department in New York. From 1976 to 1978 he served as Detective in<br />

Charge for the Juvenile/Community Relations Division responsible for the development, training, <strong>and</strong> oversight<br />

of the crime prevention <strong>and</strong> diversionary programs for troubled youth. By 1978, he began employment with<br />

the New York State Police, promoted to Senior Investigator by 1992. In 1995, Mr. Harlin was assigned as the<br />

Bureau of Criminal Investigation Coordinator. During his tenure, he worked on traffic stops, criminal<br />

investigations, undercover narcotics operations <strong>and</strong> training development, implementation <strong>and</strong> instruction.<br />

Mr. Harlin has engaged in over 400 lectures throughout the United States, Canada, <strong>and</strong> the Caribbean focusing<br />

on <strong>Interview</strong> <strong>and</strong> Interrogation, Courtroom Testimony <strong>and</strong> Demeanor, <strong>and</strong> Office Safety/Dealing with Problem<br />

Individuals. He is also an adjunct instructor for the International Association of Chief of Police. Mr. Harlin is a<br />

certified Master Instructor by the New York State Bureau of Municipal Police. He is a graduate of the New York<br />

State Police Academy, the Dale Carnegie course <strong>and</strong> the Municipal Police Training Counsel Academy Basic<br />

Course for Police Offices. He continues his education at Dutchess Community College.<br />
