havoverfladen, det gør prisen naturligvis også;
betjeningen - helt igennem first class.
No less than 34 large towns and a number of
diminutive fishing ports between Bergen and
Kirkenes in the far north are visited by the
Hurtigruten ships, which bring and/or pick up
cargo and post, but that also serve as local
public transport.
The latter aspect has developed into tourism of
international format, standard and renown – in
fact, into a form of cruise with everything you
could want, and more. Inaccessible places such
as Svolvær, Sortland and Harstad in Lofo-
ten, the unique Troll Fjord, Skjervøy, Tromsø,
Hammerfest, Nordkapp, Kirkenes and such
exotic place names as Øksfjord, Honningsvåg,
Berlevåg and many other are made accessible
for ordinary people at reasonable prices; and
tourists from all over the world flock here to
see the picturesque gems of Norwegian fishing
ports north of the Arctic Circle in the Norwe-
gian Sea, Arctic Ocean and Barents Sea. And
you can visit them all year round to experience
everything from the impressive snow-clad
mountains and Northern Lights suspended like
curtains across the night sky during the winter,
to the Midnight Sun – which never sets for a
period of two months around midsummer.
The ships carry excellent guides who can tell
you everything worth knowing; not only on
board the ship, but also about the unique
panoramas you pass along the way through the
fantastic archipelagos, where it’s more common
to lose your breath because of the scenery than
to breathe normally. And when you go ashore
for an excursion, there is always a local Nor-
wegian- English- and German-speaking guide
waiting on the quayside with modern buses.
The accommodation is in well-furnished cabins
with own shower and toilet all the way from the
second to the seventh deck. The level of comfort
is uniform throughout, but the intensity of the
view increases with the height above the sea’s
surface – as does the price of course.
The food on board is a chapter unto itself, and
if I were to say it’s equivalent to a 5* restau-
rant, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration. Naturally,
it’s all the best from the sea you sail on, from
lobsters, mussels, crab, lots of magnificent Arc-
tic prawns, halibut and salmon, to 10 different
types of herring. And the selection of meat,
cheeses and desserts is just as impressive, so be
prepared to put on few kilos unless you can
The World’s
Most
Beautiful
Voyage!
Am I dreaming, or is this for real? There are
a number of good reasons for asking yourself
that question when you ascend on the funicu-
lar to the top of Fløyfjeldet and gaze out over
Bergen – unaware that over the next 12 days
there are even more spectacular sights in store
as you cruise along the almost 2000 km long
coast of Norway
resist temptation. Doing the latter is easier said
than done!
And the service - first class all the way.
Back in Bergen after 12 days and 5,225 km, I
think it safe to say:
There can hardly be anywhere in the world that
can offer anything to compare with the World’s
Most Beautiful Voyage!
