Mauritz Stiller.
POLISH JAZZ VISIT - ON THE WAY
TOWARD CULTURE CAPITAL 2017
Performing at Atlas are: Adam Baldych Quartet. 27-year-old
violinist Adam Baldych lives in New York, but plays regularly with his
Polish quartet that is coming to Aarhus for the first time. At age 11
Adam Baldych began playing violin, inspired by Rachmaninoff, Chopin
and Tchaikovsky, and he won various prizes. At age 13 he decided to
play jazz and at age 16 toured Europe and Asia, after which he was
admitted to Berklee College of Music in Boston. Since then he has
toured with Jim Beard, Didier Lockwood, Pierre Blanchard and Jerry
Goodman, and has recorded with vocalist Mika Urbianski. He won
international recognition with his band, Damage Control.
Together with pianist Leszek Mozdzer*, Baldych has written film
music to the silent movie, ”Sir Arne’s Treasure”, by Swedish director
Mauritz Stiller. In 2012 he recorded the album, ”Imaginary Room”,
with Lars Danielsson, Morten Lund, Jacob Karlzon, Verneri Pohjola
and Marius Neset. Baldych has been given the nickname, ”Evil”, for
his devilish virtuosity, expressiveness and the variability of his violin
playing.
*Leszek Mozdzer will be performing with Cæcilie Norby at the
concerts in Musikhuset Aarhus and at Maltfabrikken, Ebeltoft.
Warsaw Village Band. Anmeldere kalder dem Polens svar på The
polske grammy Frederik Award.
sound of globalisation”.
Tak til Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Copenhagen og Fonden
Aarhus 2017 for støtte til projektet.
With the project, Polish Jazz at Atlas, Aarhus Jazz Festival has
already begun preparing to celebrate Aarhus as Europe’s Culture Capital 2017
The Warsaw Village Band. The critics call them Poland’s answer to
The Pogues, the Irish-British Celtic punk band from 1982. Now, at long
last, they’re coming to Aarhus.
The Warsaw Village Band is the symbol of young, intelligent Eastern
European music that combines tradition with modern elements. The
group travelled around to Polish villages to seek out the original
folklore before it was forgotten, and have combined it with rock and
electronics to make a beautiful and varied sound that includes three
vocal parts.
In 2004 the band was given the BBC World Music Award, and in
2006 it received the Frederik Award, the Polish Grammy. The BBC
also produced a 60-minute portrait of the group that was shown in a
number of European countries. The New York Times has called the
Warsaw Village Band one of the most important bands on the worldmusic
scene, describing the music as ”the sound of globalisation”.
Today the Warsaw Village Band is the most successful nonmainstream
Eastern European group.
Many thanks to the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in
Copenhagen and Udviklingspuljen Fonden Aarhus 2017 for their
