Bringing world-class music
to Winchester College
Welcom e
Winchester College is delighted
to present this series of public
concerts for the academic year
2017/18. Following the recent
refurbishment of New Hall, and
the acquisition of the wonderful
new Steinway D concert grand
piano, the College is keen once
again to provide a stage for
some of our greatest musicians.
The six concerts provide a wide range of music
performed by some of the UK?s leading soloists
and ensembles. Connections with Winchester
College abound, with three former pupils among
the musicians, and works by a former pupil and
previous College organist.
We hope you will enjoy this varied programme of
concerts, and we are happy to offer a discounted
ticket for the entire series. I would like to thank the
College for the chance to curate this series, and
look forward to future seasons of the Visiting Artist
Series. As a pupil at the school in the late '70s, I
was inspired by hearing so many wonderful
musicians perform, such as James Galway, Radu
Lupu, Heinz Holliger, John Williams, Janet Baker,
and The King's Singers. Such concerts were a
formative experience for me, and having spent
over 25 years on the road with The King?s Singers, I
am delighted now to return to the College as a
member of the vocal staff and as curator of this
Visiting Artist Series. I would welcome any
suggestions from our audience, either in person at
the concerts, or via email - concerts@wincoll.ac.uk
Dvo?ák Piano Quintet in A major op.81
Since its first concert in January 1983, the Schubert
Ensemble has established itself as one of the world's leading
exponents of music for piano and strings. The ensemble
has broadcast frequently on BBC Radio 3 and has
performed in over 40 different countries. It has around 80
commissions to its name, and has recorded more than 30
critically acclaimed CDs, the most recent being a recording
of piano quartets by Chausson and Saint-Saëns which
received a double 5-star review in BBC Music Magazine. In
1998 the Ensemble received the Royal Philharmonic Society
Best Chamber Ensemble Award.
The Ensemble has decided to bring its 35-year career to a
close at the end of June 2018. It will see out its final season
in celebratory style, with around fifty concerts planned in
the UK and abroad, including return visits to Romania and
Luxembourg and two tours of the USA. The final two
concerts of the Ensemble?s piano quintet series
Quintessentials at Kings Place will take place on October
One of the most versatile and original cellists of his
generation, Adrian Brendel has travelled the world as
soloist, collaborator and teacher. His early immersion in
the core classical repertoire inspired an enduring
fascination that has led to encounters with many fine
musicians at the world?s most prestigious festivals and
concert halls. His discovery of contemporary music
through the works of Kurtág, Kagel and
Ligeti in his teenage years opened a
new and vital avenue that he
continues to explore with huge
enthusiasm alongside his passion
for jazz and world music. In 2014
he became a member of the
Nash Ensemble of London.
QUEEN OF MUSES
Elizabeth I as Monarch, Patron and Lover
The reign of the great Tudor Queen, Elizabeth I, saw an
unparalleled flowering of the arts in England. The 'Virgin
Queen', herself a talented musician, presided over a
court which revelled in the skill of composers such as
Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, and John Dowland. This
programme explores the way music was used to gain
favour with the Queen by courtiers and diplomats and
even by suitors, seeking to win the royal hand in
marriage. Along the way we meet foreign spies,
disgraced favourites and plotting noblemen, illuminating
the life of a court which rejoiced in some of the finest
music ever created in England.
