and discovery travels. Bacalhau, the codfish,<br />
is cooked here in countless ways. Try these three<br />
recipes: bacalhau com natas (baked codfish with potatoes<br />
and cream), pataniscas de bacalhau (battered<br />
fried codfish with been rice) and pastéis de bacalhau<br />
(codfish pastries). The seafood is excellent as much<br />
as any served fish. Wines and cheeses are another<br />
gourmand must you should not pass by. Taste the<br />
local pastries, mostly cakes and desserts. Delicious!<br />

- docas (the docks). The docks are close by to<br />
the 25 de Abril Bridge, in Alcântara. It’s a seaport<br />

atmospheres either day or night;<br />
- 24 de Julho avenue. This is a legendary scene<br />
in Santos as far as Lisbon’s nightlife is concerned.<br />
The “Kapital” is the most famous club in the area.<br />
The quarter of Santos is also famous for its bars;<br />
- Rocha conde d’Óbidos. Between Docas and<br />
Santos, right on the water’s edge, you will find<br />
these amazing clubs, some of the best p<strong>la</strong>ces in<br />
<strong>Lisboa</strong>; on Tuesdays it is Ladies <strong>Night</strong>;<br />
- Parque das Nações. The new oriental division<br />

A WALK IN DE PASEO POR<br />
he Baixa it’s the heart of <strong>Lisboa</strong>, rebuilt af-<br />
Tter the 1755 earthquake, by the lead of the<br />
Marquês de Pombal. Have a look at the Comércio<br />
Square. Right around the corner, you find the beautiful<br />
square of the city hall (1867). On the opposite<br />
side of Praça do Comércio you find the Casa dos<br />
Bicos (16th century) with its pyramidal façade.<br />
The main street is Rua Augusta, the pedestrian,<br />
with the magnificient triumphal<br />
arch (1873), but Rua do<br />
Ouro and Rua da Prata are also<br />
emblematic. The Rossio Square<br />
is a <strong>la</strong>ndmark. Dominated in<br />
the centre by the statue of D.<br />
Pedro IV, on its northern side<br />
is the National Theatre D. Maria<br />
II. At this side is also the Praça<br />
da Figueira with the statue of<br />
D. João I. Baixa is <strong>Lisboa</strong>’s symbol,<br />
all full of history. The area<br />
of Chiado is another of <strong>Lisboa</strong>’s<br />
symbols. In the “Brasileira”,<br />
an emblematic old café, you<br />

can sit and enjoy the moment with the poet Fernando<br />
Pessoa bronze urban sculpture. In 1988,<br />
after a terrible fire that almost burnt the quarter<br />
to the ground, the Chiado area was rebuilt<br />
by architect Siza Vieira. Extremely lively and<br />
commercial, it is a quiet district, a p<strong>la</strong>ce where<br />
writers and artists meet in cafés.

es Rua Augusta, peatonal, con su magnífico Arco <strong>del</strong><br />
Triunfo (1873), pero Rua do Ouro y Rua da Prata son<br />
también emblemáticas. La Praça do Rossio es todo<br />
un símbolo, dominada por <strong>la</strong> estátua de D. Pedro IV,<br />
en el <strong>la</strong>do norte está el Teatro Nacional D. Maria II.<br />
Del otro <strong>la</strong>do está <strong>la</strong> Praça da Figueira, con <strong>la</strong> estatua<br />
de D. João I. Decir Baixa es decir <strong>Lisboa</strong>, con toda<br />
su historia. El Chiado es una de <strong>la</strong>s zonas emblematicas<br />
de <strong>Lisboa</strong>. En <strong>la</strong> “Brasileira”, histórico y antiguo<br />
café, puedes sentarte y apreciar ese momento con<br />
Fernando Pessoa (Poeta). Después <strong>del</strong> terrible incendio<br />
de 1988, el Chiado fue reconstruido por el<br />
arquitecto Siza Vieira. Extremadamente vivo comercialmente,<br />
es un barrio tranquilo, donde escritores y<br />
artistas se encuentran en cafés.

Bairro Alto<br />
he Bairro Alto is obligatory when visiting <strong>Lisboa</strong>.<br />
TGoing around this quarter is to feel the life and<br />
history of the city, with its people and its Fado, the<br />
tradition of the customs and modernity, the day and<br />
the night. By day, typical cafés, old clothing stores,<br />
traditional grocery shops, hairdressers, artisans’<br />
workshops, bookstores and CD shops, brighten up<br />
this old and charming quarter. Amongst the busiest<br />
streets is Rua do Norte, also packed with clothing<br />
stores, shoe shops, tattooing parlours and alternative<br />
brand shops. Rua da Rosa is very popu<strong>la</strong>r,<br />
being popu<strong>la</strong>ted throughout by the elderly. It has<br />
traditional commerce stores as butchers, bakeries<br />
and drugstores. Rua da Ata<strong>la</strong>ia is another important<br />
street to cover. In one of the quarter limits is<br />
the pretty and historical Rua do Século (where the<br />
Marquis of Pombal was born), which together with<br />
Calçada do Combro has unsurpassable stores. Rua<br />
da Barroca hosts the famous cultural association<br />
“Zé dos Bois” (nº59).<br />
Many of the quarter shops bring together a public<br />
who returns during the night. After 22:00 and<br />
mainly on Fridays and Saturdays, a sea of young<br />
people invades the narrow streets of Bairro Alto<br />
in search for nightlife and finds the assurance of a<br />
well passed evening. The quarter is on the top of<br />
lisboetas preferences as a night out starter. There<br />
are trendy bars and other venues ready to be discovered,<br />
and it offers musical trends for all. All have<br />
their corner at the quarter. Amongst the innumerable<br />
bars, one is must-see: The Pavilhão Chinês<br />
(R. D. Pedro V, 89, at Principe Real) has an amazing<br />
decoration with valuable collectors’ pieces as military<br />
toys or airp<strong>la</strong>ne scale mo<strong>del</strong>s. In terms of restaurants,<br />
the Bairro Alto is a gastronomic trip: there<br />
are multiple food venues and gourmet bistros, and<br />
also regional and international restaurants. At the<br />
quarter there is also many venues to listen to Fado.<br />
You can listen to Portuguese guitars and voices<br />
p<strong>la</strong>ying until <strong>la</strong>te, as at the Faia (R. Barroca 54) or<br />
at the Luso (Travessa da Queimada 45). The Bairro<br />
Alto is today one of <strong>Lisboa</strong>’s hot spots and the one<br />
where animation <strong>la</strong>sts all day long.

da Rosa es muy popu<strong>la</strong>r y está habitada por mucha<br />
gente mayor. Tiene tiendas de comercio tradicional,<br />
carnicería, panadería, droguería… La Rua da Ata<strong>la</strong>ia<br />
es otra calle importante para recorrer y en uno de<br />
los límites <strong>del</strong> Barrio queda <strong>la</strong> bonita y histórica Rua<br />
do Século (donde nació el Marqués de Pombal) y que<br />
junto a <strong>la</strong> Calçada do Combro tiene tiendas que no te<br />
puedes perder. En <strong>la</strong> Rua da Barroca está <strong>la</strong> famosa<br />
asociación cultural “Zé dos Bois” (nº59).<br />

Muchas de <strong>la</strong>s tiendas <strong>del</strong> barrio están direccionadas<br />
para el público más noctámbulo. Después de <strong>la</strong>s 22h<br />
y principalmente los Viernes y los Sábados, un mar<br />
de gente joven invade <strong>la</strong>s estrechas calles <strong>del</strong> Barrio<br />
Alto buscando animación, que sin duda está garantizada.<br />
Este barrio es escogido mayoritariamente<br />
para comenzar <strong>la</strong> noche, con bares de culto y otros<br />
que esperan ser descubiertos y <strong>la</strong> oferta musical es<br />
para todos los gustos y todos tienen su espacio. Entre<br />
los numerosos bares, hay uno que destaca, “Pavilhão<br />
Chinês” (R. D. Pedro V, nº 89, esquina al Príncipe<br />
Real), tiene una magnífica decoración, con piezas de<br />
valor entre soldaditos de juguete o diferentes mo<strong>del</strong>os<br />
de aviones. También para cenar el Barrio Alto es<br />
un viaje gastronómico donde se multiplican <strong>la</strong>s casas<br />
típicas, los restaurantes regionales e internacionales,<br />
lugares siempre acogedores donde también es<br />
común poder escuchar fado, guitarras portuguesas y<br />
voces cantando hasta altas horas, como en “Faia” (R.<br />
Barroca 54) o en “Luso” (Travessa da Queimada 45).<br />
El Barrio Alto es hoy uno de los lugares más animados<br />
de <strong>la</strong> ciudad durante todo el dia.
Castelo, Graça e Alfama<br />
tart walking at the Cathedral (nearby Baixa, at<br />
SRua Santo António da Sé). The Cathedral was<br />
built in 1147 and has many inside treasures. Take<br />
Rua Augusto Rosa and go up until the Santa Luzia<br />
Belvedere. Have a look on the river and Alfama and<br />
take Rua de São Tiago until the end. When you start<br />
to go down, do not turn right to the Castle. Instead,<br />
walk some meters along Rua Costa do Castelo and<br />
take a rest at Chapitô Restô (n.1/7), which has a<br />
great view and a very nice atmosphere.<br />
After the drink, it is time to go up and into the<br />
S. Jorge Castle (10th century). Beyond the Castle,<br />
you climb until Graça. Take Calçada da Graça from<br />
where you will get to Largo da Graça with another<br />
superb view over <strong>Lisboa</strong> hills, nearby the old Convent<br />
of the 12th century. Just a few minutes away,<br />
another amazing sightseeing venue propped with a<br />
little church, at Senhora do Monte. Do not miss it!<br />
Then go back and down trough Rua Voz do Operário,<br />
turn left at S. Vicente de Fora Church and Convent,<br />
which you cannot afford to miss. Behind you, you<br />
will find the Campo de Santa C<strong>la</strong>ra (at this square<br />
there is a flea market on Tuesday and Saturday mornings)<br />
and the National Pantheon, where are buried<br />
illustrious Portuguese. Get back towards castle’s<br />
direction and arrive at Largo das Portas do Sol, with<br />
its popu<strong>la</strong>r café terraces. Take a rest and admire the<br />
views over the river and Alfama.<br />
This typical quarter stands between the Castle and<br />
the river. Take the stairs on the right down onto the<br />
narrow streets of Alfama, founded by Arabs, full<br />
of picturesque alleys and patios. At the foothill of<br />
Alfama you will find the Fado Museum, which song<br />
is a part of Alfama itself, where you notice typical<br />
restaurants to listening to this popu<strong>la</strong>r song.

fué construida en 1147 y posee muchos tesoros en<br />
su interior. Subiendo <strong>la</strong> Rua Augusto Rosa, llegas<br />
hasta el mirador de Santa Luzia, allí puedes contemp<strong>la</strong>r<br />
una maravillosa vista sobre el río y Alfama, continua<br />
subiendo por <strong>la</strong> Rua de São Tiago hasta llegar<br />
al final y cuando comiences a bajar, en vez de girar<br />
a <strong>la</strong> derecha en dirección al castillo, camina algunos<br />
metros en <strong>la</strong> Rua Costa do Castelo (nº 1/7) y haz una<br />
parada en “Chapitô Restô”, posee un ambiente muy<br />
agradable y una impresionante vista.<br />
Después de este descanso es hora de continuar <strong>la</strong><br />
subida y entrar en el Castillo de S. Jorge (siglo X).<br />
A continuación sube hasta Graça, atravesando <strong>la</strong><br />
Calçada da Graça llegarás al Largo da Graça, junto al<br />
viejo convento <strong>del</strong> siglo XII, con otra soberbia vista<br />
sobre <strong>la</strong>s colinas de <strong>Lisboa</strong>. A pocos minutos de aquí<br />
se encuentra otro lugar con unas vistas increíbles y<br />
<strong>la</strong> pequeña iglesia Señora do Monte. Bajando por <strong>la</strong><br />
Rua Voz do Operário, gira a <strong>la</strong> izquierda en <strong>la</strong> iglesia<br />
y Convento de S. Vicente de Fora, que también es<br />
interesante visitar, por detrás se encuentra el Campo<br />
de Santa C<strong>la</strong>ra (donde se realiza un mercado de<br />
segunda mano los Martes y Sábados por <strong>la</strong> mañana)<br />
y el Panteón Nacional, donde están sepultados ilustres<br />
portugueses. Regresa en dirección al castillo y<br />
llegarás al Largo das Portas do Sol con sus famosos<br />
cafés. Tómate otro descanso y disfruta nuevamente<br />
de <strong>la</strong>s vistas sobre el río y Alfama.<br />
El barrio típico de Alfama está situado entre el Castillo<br />
y el río, baja <strong>la</strong>s escaleras situadas a <strong>la</strong> derecha y<br />
recorre <strong>la</strong>s estrechas callejue<strong>la</strong>s de este popu<strong>la</strong>r barrio<br />
fundado por los moros, lleno de rincones y patios<br />
pintorescos. Aquí se encuentra situado al Museo <strong>del</strong><br />
Fado y encontrarás numerosos restaurantes típicos<br />
donde escuchar esta música tan popu<strong>la</strong>r.

e start this promenade at Estre<strong>la</strong> Garden<br />
W(1852). One may get there riding on Tram 25<br />
and 28 or by Underground – Rato is the closest stop.<br />
Facing this historic and welcoming garden is Estre<strong>la</strong><br />
Basilica built on the 18th Century. Close by also is<br />
the commercial quarter of Campo de Ourique (where<br />
is the Fernando Pessoa House and Prazeres Cemitery)<br />
and, on the way to the river, the aristocratic<br />
quarter of Lapa and the traditional quarter of Madragoa.<br />
Go down on Calçada de S. Bento until the Portuguese<br />
Parliament, the São Bento Pa<strong>la</strong>ce. Besides<br />
this beautiful building, which you may visit, peek at<br />
the antique shops, the former Fado singer Amalia<br />
Rodrigues’ house, and the picturesque surrounding<br />
streets, all of it at S. Bento Street. Keep going down<br />
on D. Carlos I Ave. and at the bottom turn right at<br />
Jane<strong>la</strong>s Verdes Street. In Santos quarter it is mandatory<br />
visiting the National Art Museum – with its<br />
inviting garden and terrace-café. From there, keep<br />
on going to Necessidades Natural Park and Pa<strong>la</strong>ce,<br />
and the Alcantara quarter, just above downtown.<br />
Close to and under 25 de Abril Bridge (1966), which<br />
crosses the river Tagus, one finds a Lisboetas hot<br />
spot: the Docks: day or night, this is a re<strong>la</strong>xing marina<br />
complex; beyond a superb view, it has se-veral<br />
terrace-cafés, restaurants and nightclubs.<br />

Estre<strong>la</strong>, São Bento e Docas<br />
niciamos este paseo en el Jardím da Estre<strong>la</strong><br />
I(1852). Llegas hasta allí en los Tranvías 25 y 28<br />
o en Metro (Rato es <strong>la</strong> estación mas próxima). En<br />
frente a este histórico y acogedor jardín está <strong>la</strong> Basílica<br />
<strong>del</strong> siglo XVIII. Allí cerca está también el barrio<br />
comercial de Campo de Ourique (donde está <strong>la</strong> casa<br />
de Fernando Pessoa y el Cementerio dos Prazeres)<br />
y a camino <strong>del</strong> río, el aristocrático barrio de Lapa<br />
y el típico barrio de <strong>la</strong> Madragoa. Desciende por <strong>la</strong><br />
Calçada de S. Bento hasta el Par<strong>la</strong>mento Portugués,<br />
el Pa<strong>la</strong>cio de S. Bento. Además de este bonito edificio<br />
que se puede visitar por dentro, asómate a <strong>la</strong> Rua<br />
de S. Bento con sus anticuarios, <strong>la</strong> casa de Amalia<br />
Rodrigues (fadista) y <strong>la</strong>s pintorescas calles que <strong>la</strong><br />
rodean. Desciende por <strong>la</strong> Av. D. Carlos I y al fondo<br />
gira a <strong>la</strong> derecha para <strong>la</strong> Rua das Jane<strong>la</strong>s Verdes. En<br />
Santos es obligatorio visitar el Museo Nacional de<br />
Arte Antiguo (con un atrayente jardín y terraza).<br />
Desde ahí pro-sigue hacia el Pa<strong>la</strong>cio y <strong>la</strong> Tapada das<br />
Necesidades y baja después para Alcántara. Junto al<br />
puente sobre el Tajo, <strong>la</strong> 25 de Abril (1966), encuentras<br />
uno de los lugares preferidos de los lisboetas:<br />
Las Docas. Esta marina es ideal para re<strong>la</strong>jar de día<br />
o de noche, ya que además de una vista soberbia,<br />

SINTRA<br />
“ Sintra is probably the most beautiful town in the<br />
whole world (Lord Byron): “Today it’s the happiest<br />
day in my life. I know Italy, Sicily, Greece and<br />
Egypt and I’ve never seen anything that is worth<br />
it (Pena). It’s the most beautiful. At the top, there’s<br />
the Saint Grail Castle (Richard Strauss).<br />
Many defined Sintra (world heritage) a romantic a<br />
must-see p<strong>la</strong>ce, a visit to the 19th century, just 30<br />
minutes by car/train away from <strong>Lisboa</strong>. To get to<br />
know Sintra you need more than a day. Its pa<strong>la</strong>ces,<br />
cottages and parks are spread out in luxurious vegetation<br />
that after 1839 and for 25 years, Prince<br />
D. Fernando II imported from exotic p<strong>la</strong>ces in the<br />
world.<br />
In the historical centre you can find the National<br />
Pa<strong>la</strong>ce (first built in 1154) with its big chimneys.<br />
Close by, visit the Café Piriquita and taste the<br />
sweets “travesseiros” and “queijadas”. Move on to<br />
the Regaleira Pa<strong>la</strong>ce and Gardens (19th century) -<br />
a must-see! – after which you’ll find Seteais Pa<strong>la</strong>ce<br />
(18th century), today an exquisite hotel. It’s time<br />
now to look up and go up! To climb the mountain<br />
you should take bus 434. There you’ll find the Pena<br />
Pa<strong>la</strong>ce (19th century), magic, and the Moorish Castle<br />
(8th century).<br />
In Sintra, you should visit also the Capuchos Convent<br />
(1560) and Monserrate Pa<strong>la</strong>ce and Gardens<br />
(1858), both outside the historical centre. You can<br />
also take a ride on an old coach or take a tram to<br />
Maçãs beach. If you stay overnight don’t forget to<br />
drink a Co<strong>la</strong>res wine at dinner. As defined by the<br />
Portuguese writer Vergílio Ferreira, “Sintra is the<br />
most beautiful farewell of Europe when it finally<br />
meets the sea”.<br />

minutos de <strong>Lisboa</strong> (tren/coche). Para conocer bien<br />
Sintra necesitas más que un día, podrás perderte<br />
en sus pa<strong>la</strong>cios, quintas y parques localizados dentro<br />
de una frondosa vegetación. Fue el Principe D.<br />
Fernando II quien importó, durante 25 años, a partir<br />
de 1839, numerosos ejemp<strong>la</strong>res exóticos de varios<br />
lugares <strong>del</strong> mundo.<br />
En el casco histórico de Sintra se encuentra el Pa<strong>la</strong>cio<br />
Nacional (1154), con sus grandes chimeneas.<br />
Muy cerca no puedes dejar de visitar el “Café Piriquita”<br />
y probar sus dulces más famosos: “travesseiros”<br />
y “queijadas”. Después de esta parada, dirígete al<br />
Pa<strong>la</strong>cio y Jardins da Regaleira (siglo XIX) y echa una<br />
ojeada al Pa<strong>la</strong>cio de Seteais (siglo XVIII), hoy un lujoso<br />
hotel.<br />
En lo más alto de <strong>la</strong> sierra (coge Bus 434) están<br />
el Pa<strong>la</strong>cio da Pena, (S.XIX), un pa<strong>la</strong>cio de cuento,<br />
¡realmente mágico! y el Castillo de los Moros, (S.<br />
VIII). De visita obligada son también el Convento de<br />
Capuchos (1560) y el Pa<strong>la</strong>cio y Jardines de Monserrate<br />
(1858), ambos fuera <strong>del</strong> centro histórico. Finalmente,<br />
relájate dando un paseo en un viejo carruaje<br />
o coge el tranvía que te lleva a <strong>la</strong> P<strong>la</strong>ya das Maçãs.<br />

throw from the river Tagus. Cascais is exactly the<br />
<strong>la</strong>st stop in that line, but we advice you to get off<br />

in the whole Europe. If you do not want to spend<br />
your money trying your luck, get down to Estoril’s<br />
beach and turn right on the seaside walkway towards<br />
Cascais. Both the beach and the seaside<br />
walkway are packed with bars where you can sit<br />
and enjoy your drink by the sea. After a short walk,<br />
you are in Cascais.<br />
Cascais isn’t big but it surely is beautiful. Do not<br />
miss the small beaches just around the corner and<br />
feel the wind blowing on the bay, near the centre.<br />
It is nice to walk there and you can have a drink or<br />
grab a bite because there are many p<strong>la</strong>ces to do it.<br />
The historical centre is full of small pleasant streets.<br />
Many years ago, Cascais used to be an old fishermen’s<br />
vil<strong>la</strong>ge, yet quite aristocratic. Nowadays,<br />
Cascais lives out of the tourism. In front of the train<br />
station, you can get a free bike ride. Do not skip a<br />
visit to the marina and the small beach behind it.<br />
Keep walking west and get to the Boca do Inferno<br />
(Mouth of Hell), a natural setting of seashore caves.<br />

Casa da Guia. If you can, get a bus (405/415)<br />
or a bike and continue until you find Guincho beach.<br />
Windy and wild, you will find big waves, perfect for<br />
surfing board practice. At Estoril and Cascais, nightlife<br />
is also paramount.<br />

diferentes lugares para visitar. Esa es una de <strong>la</strong>s<br />
ventajas de <strong>la</strong> capital portuguesa. Tiene muchos<br />
lugares distintos y paisajes a pocos minutos de distancia.<br />
Una de <strong>la</strong>s sugerencias es ir hasta Cascais,<br />
una vil<strong>la</strong> muy agradable, a 40 minutos <strong>del</strong> centro.<br />
Llegas ahí cogiendo el tren en <strong>la</strong> estacion de trenes<br />
de Cais do Sodré, cerca <strong>del</strong> rio. La ultima parada es<br />
precisamente Cascais, pero te aconsejamos salir dos<br />
estaciones antes, en Estoril. Una vil<strong>la</strong> aristocratica<br />
con bonitas casas y el mayor Casino de Europa. Si no<br />
tienes el dinero necesario en el bolsillo para tentar<br />
<strong>la</strong> suerte, baja a <strong>la</strong> bonita p<strong>la</strong>ya de Estoril y gira a <strong>la</strong><br />
derecha en el paseo hacia Cascais. Ambos, <strong>la</strong> p<strong>la</strong>ya<br />
y el paseo marítimo estan llenos de bares donde te<br />
puedes sentar y disfrutar en frente al mar. Dando un<br />
corto paseo estás en Cascais.<br />
Cascais no es grande pero es preciosa. No te pierdas<br />
<strong>la</strong>s pequeñas p<strong>la</strong>yas justo al borde de <strong>la</strong>s calles y<br />
siente el viento en <strong>la</strong> bahia, cerca <strong>del</strong> centro. Está<br />
genial para caminar y puedes tomar algo o comer<br />
porque hay muchos sitios para hacerlo. El centro<br />
historico esta lleno de pequeñas y buenas calles.<br />
Cascais ya fue un pueblo de pescadores y una vil<strong>la</strong><br />
aristrocratica y hoy vive más para el turismo. En frente<br />
a <strong>la</strong> estación de trenes puedes coger una bici<br />
gratuita. No te pierdas <strong>la</strong> marina y <strong>la</strong> pequeña p<strong>la</strong>ya<br />
por detrás. Sigue caminando y llega a <strong>la</strong> Boca <strong>del</strong> Infierno.<br />
Solo a algunos minutos de distancia hay un<br />
buen sitio para re<strong>la</strong>jar, <strong>la</strong> Casa da Guia. Si puedes,<br />
coge un autobus (405/415) o una bici y continua<br />
hacia <strong>la</strong> p<strong>la</strong>ya de Guincho. Una p<strong>la</strong>ya con fuertes<br />
vientos y muy salvaje, encontrarás grandes o<strong>la</strong>s,<br />
perfectas para el surf. Para <strong>la</strong> vida nocturna, Estoril<br />
y Cascais son también buenos lugares.
