Laborers’ Training Center Partnering to Improve Training
El Centro de Capacitación para los Obreros trabaja en Asociación para Mejorar el Entrenamiento
Jeff Armstrong, Instructor Supervisor Jerome Williams and
I, have attended these meetings, and we have been able to
inform our contractors of the training opportunities available
to them at no cost.
Local 1130 received a request for a High Scaling class
from signatory contractor Bill Holloway of California
Drilling and Blasting, in order to start work on a project.
The Training Unit was dispatched to the California Drilling
and Blasting site, and the Introduction to High Scaling class
was presented by Instructor Rick Roath and was a success.
There are requests for another class, and Southern California
Training is requesting for Rick to teach the class in their
area.
We continue to receive requests from our Shotcrete
Signatory Contractors, and the Laborers’
Locals for ACI Certifi cation of our shotcrete
laborers. We have built a relationship with
Examiner Chris Zynda, President of the American
Shotcrete Association, and the Training
Center hosts the classroom examination and the
practical examination for both the vertical and
overhead certifi cations.
The Laborers’ Training Center received a
donation of tunneling materials from Mr. Doug
Bailey, Project Manager for Michels Pipeline
Construction. Mr. Jim Wood, Business Representative for
Local 1130, was key in obtaining the tunneling materials,
and even assisted in the loading and unloading the equipment.
The Training Center is in the process of developing
a training program on safe tunneling methods, and the
contribution by Michels Pipeline will help in the success
of the program. The commitment of Michels Pipeline was
expressed in a letter from Mr. Doug Bailey, “We at Michels
Tunneling desire the ability to obtain trained and qualifi ed
miners from the Laborers’ local labor pool and therefore
fi nd that supporting a program such as this as being benefi -
cial to both contractors and the union. We hope to be able
to continue to provide assistance in your efforts to provide
realistic training in safe tunneling methods.”
Partnering with our signatory contractors, our Union
Locals, LECET Southwest, and training organizations will
ensure that The Training Center will continue to keep the
lines of communication open, so that the training we offer
our members will meet the construction industry demands
of the present and future.

El Local 1130 recibió una solicitud para una clase de Escalar del
contratista signatario Bill Holloway de Perforacion y Voladura de
California, para poder empezar a trabajar en un proyecto. La Unidad
Móvil de Entrenamiento fué enviada al sitio de Perforación y Voladura
de California, y la clase de Introducción de Escalar fué presentada
por el Instructor Rick Roath, y fué todo un éxito. Hay una petición
para otra clase, y el Centro de Entrenamiento del Sur de California
está pidiendo que Rick enseñe la clase en su área.
Continuamos recibiendo peticiones de nuestros Contratistas Signatarios
de Shotcrete, y de los Locales
de Obreros, para la Certifi cación de
ACI Shotcrete para nuestros Obreros.
El Centro ha desarroyado una
relación con el examinador Chris
Zynda, Presidente de la Asociación
Americana de Shotcrete. El Centro
de Entrenamiento es huesped de la
clase y examinación en el salon de
clase y la examinación práctica
de Certifi caciones Verticales y
Horizontales.
El Centro de Entrenamiento de
Trabajadores recibió una donación de materiales de túnel del Sr.
Doug Bailey, Gerente de Proyecto para Michels Pipeline Construction.
El senor Jim Wood, Representante de Negocios para el Local
1130, fué la clave para obtener los materiales de túnel. Incluso ayudó
a cargar y descargar el equipo. El Centro de Entrenamiento está en
proceso de desarrollar un programa de entrenamiento sobre métodos
seguros para hacer un túnel, y la contribución de Michels Pipeline
ayudará al éxito del programa. El compromiso de Michels Pipeline
fue expresado en una carta escrita por el Sr. Doug Bailey, “Nosotros
aqui en Michels Tunneling deseamos la abilidad de obtener mineros
