From the Desk of Monsignor David… 3 You’ve perhaps noticed in our bulletin on page 14 that every Mass offered in our parish throughout the week has an intention associated with it. Normally, these intentions are deceased persons whom we wish to remember; but the intention can be for almost any need – for rain, for a person’s birthday, in thanksgiving, etc. (If the intention is for a deceased person, there will be a cross after his or her name.) Anyone may request a Mass. When doing so, it is understood that there is a stipend of $10.00 offered along with the request. For example, if I wish to have a Mass offered for a deceased relative, I call or come to see Betsy McNeil at the front desk in the Gathering Space. She writes the name of the intention and receives your stipend. If possible, she will schedule the Mass you’ve requested on a date of your choice; but if that date is not available, she will do the best she can. With a stipend you are not “buying a Mass;” the Church is not permitted to “sell” sacraments. Rather, the stipend is a participation in the sacrifice of the Mass. Ten dollars, though affordable for most people, is an appreciable amount and represents our willingness to make a sacrifice on behalf of the intention we request. Stipend money normally goes to the priest who satisfies the intention; however, some priests ask that the money be applied to a charity or other need. According to Canon Law, one Mass per weekend must be offered for the general intention of the people of the parish. And even though there is a particular intention associated with a Mass, the intentions of everyone are included in that Mass – no one is excluded from the benefits of Mass because it is the perfect Sacrifice of Jesus Christ for our salvation.
