DIEGO PALMA
There was a student that went to receive advance teachings from an old Zen master. He enters
the room and sits in front of the master.
-Master, I come for the teachings.
The master look at him and ask,
-Where do you left your shoes at the entrance, to the right side or to the left side of the door?
...The student couldn’t remember.
-Go and return next year... when you remember.
The next year the student return to visit the master. He looks very old.
-Master, I am the student who came last year for the teachings.
The master look at him as trying to remember and finally ask,
-Are you the same student?
-Yes master, but one year older.
-Go and return next year when you are not the same one.
The next year, he comes again to visit the master.
-Master, I am here for the teachings.
The master didn’t answer. He stays a while looking at the student in silence. Then he asks,
-Who are you?
The student, sitting in meditation replied,
-To whom you are asking the question?
The master smiled and told him,
- Let’s begin the teachings.
