IN the late 1980s the dance music phenomenon known as the
‘Second Summer of Love’ swept the UK amid a sea of smiley acid
house faces. The sounds that resonated from Chicago’s underground
brought dance music into the public consciousness, and by
the early ‘90s Ibiza and Britain had witnessed a musical revolution.
It was during this time that an exciting singer-songwriter emerged
out of London with a song, ‘Killer’, that conquered the UK charts in
1990 with its distinctive opening bassline and stirring lyrics:
“Racism in among future kings can only lead to no good / Besides, all
our sons and daughters already know how that feels”.
Heavily influenced by the rave scene, Seal Henry Samuel’s eponymous
debut album, ‘Seal’ (1991), catapulted him into the musical
stratosphere. He followed his aforementioned breakthrough hit ‘Killer’
with ‘Crazy’, ‘Future Love Paradise’ and his Batman Forever film
contribution ‘Kiss From A Rose’ which earned him one of the three
Grammys he now keeps in his office. “It’s always nice to be recognised
for your work,” he says. “Especially by your fans and peers.”
Seal’s sound has matured in recent years, relaxing into a soul-pop
groove, and with his present celebrity status as Mr Heidi Klum and
devoted family man, it’s easy to forget his early dance roots and the
part he played in breaking dance music in the British mainstream;
all at a time when he was couching surfing or sleeping rough.
Since then Seal has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide,
he’s still writing and recording new songs and touring and he’s currently
making two albums with “a whole load of new original material”.
This follows the success of his sixth studio album, ‘Soul’,
in which he channelled greats such as Otis Redding and Curtis
Mayfield, and the duet, ‘Wedding Day’, which he sang with his wife,
German model Klum. This summer Seal’s coming, for the first time,
to Ibiza for a one-off performance at Pure Pacha: It’s All Gone Pete
Tong, where he promises “we’re going to get down and dirty!”.

A finales de los años 80 el fenómeno de la música dance conocido como
el ‘Segundo Verano de Amor’ se extendió por el Reino Unido entre un
mar de rostros de acid house sonrientes. Los sonidos provenientes del
underground de Chicago acercaron la música house a la conciencia del
público y, para principios de los 90, Gran Bretaña había presenciado ya
una revolución musical.
Fue durante esa época que un interesante cantautor emergió de Londres
con una canción llamada ‘Killer’; con su distintiva apertura y unas
letras emotivas conquistó rápidamente las listas del Reino Unido en
1990: “Racism is among future kings can only lead to no good/ Besides,
all our sons and daughters already know how that feels”.
Influenciado fuertemente por la escena rave, el álbum epónimo de
Seal Henry Samuel, ‘Seal’ (1991), le catapultó a una estratosfera musical.
Siguió su mencionado éxito con ‘Crazy’, ‘Future Love Paradise’ y su
contribución al film Batman Forever con ‘Kiss From A Rose’ que le hizo
ganar uno de los tres Grammys que ahora guarda en su oficina. “Siempre
es agradable ser reconocido por tu trabajo”, dice. “Especialmente
por tus fans y colegas”.
El sonido de Seal ha madurado en los últimos años relajándose y acercándose
hacia un ritmo soul-pop. Su presente estatus está muy ligado
al mundo de las celebridades, junto a su mujer la modelo Heidi Klum. Si
a esto le añadimos su devoción como hombre de familia, es fácil pensar
que pueda olvidarse de sus raíces en la música dance y del papel que
jugó en impulsar la dicha música en la corriente principal británica,
en un tiempo pasado muy diferente para él, cuando iba durmiendo en
casas de amigos o incluso al raso.
Desde entonces Seal ha vendido más de 20 millones de álbumes en todo
el mundo, sigue escribiendo y grabando nuevas canciones y haciendo
giras. Actualmente está trabajando en dos álbumes con “un montón de
material nuevo”. Todo esto sigue al éxito de su sexto álbum de estudio,
‘Soul’, en el que canalizó grandes cantantes como Otis Redding y Curtis
Mayfield, así como el dueto ‘Wedding Day’, que cantó con su mujer, la
modelo alemana Heidi Klum. Este verano Seal viene a Ibiza por primera
vez para actuar en Pure Pacha: It’s All Gone Pete Tong, donde promete
que “vamos a cantar y bailar sucio”.

You first came into the public consciousness
soon after the UK height of acid house. How
did dance music inspire your songwriting and
sound? “Well, to be honest, those times were all
a little bit of a blur! It literally changed everything
for me. The whole scene was so incredibly
exciting and adventurous, and as a youngish
bloke at the time growing up in west London, I
just couldn’t help but be taken in by it.
“It was all about the music of course, but it
really was also a way of life. Every Wednesday
you’d start thinking about which parties we
were going to hunt down at the weekend and
by Thursday night you were up and running!
By the time you finished on a Tuesday morning,
you’d have about a day before thinking
ahead to the next weekend! So, did it inspire
my songwriting? Absolutely. It couldn’t do
anything but!”
Who influenced you musically during that
time? “Really, the whole scene. You know what it was like back
then, so much music being made but such a wide range of different
people that had all been influenced in one way or another by raves.”
‘Killer’ and ‘Crazy’ stand the test of time – can we expect a return
to the dance sound that first made you famous? “Absolutely.
Dance music is something that becomes part of you. When you
have the kind of experiences that we all did back in those days –
almost religious experiences in some ways – it doesn’t go away.”
How did your collaboration with Adamski on ‘Killer’ come about?
“Just through friends. Adam had recently had a hit with a track
called ‘N-R-G’, and he was doing some really interesting stuff at
the time. I’d written this melody and lyric called ‘Killer’ but not
really done anything with it, and when some friends hooked us
up, it just so happened that my melody worked perfectly over an
instrumental track Adam had done. I recorded the vocal, and we
put it out. Simple as that!”
Your voice is one of the most distinctive in music. When did you
realise you had singing talent? “Thank you for saying that, and it’s
an interesting question to ask. I wasn’t really hugely confident about
my voice as such, although I knew it made an interesting sound. I’d
had a couple of bands that had done, well, not much, but nonetheless,
music was becoming more and more important to me. It was
actually a girlfriend of mine at the time who bought me a guitar and
gave me the impetus to really focus on my music, and quite quickly
from that point everything started falling in to place.”
How did the phenomenal international success of your debut album
change your life and further shape your career? “It was a very exciting
time. After what seemed like a long time getting through those first
steps as a musician, when it moved, it moved quickly. I spent a huge
amount of time in LA – basically writing and recording what became
my second album – and had to work hard promoting and touring the
album. So it really did change everything. But frankly, it was always
something I’d dreamt of, or perhaps more accurately, visualised. So
while it all changed very quickly, somehow I felt prepared for it.”

en tu sonido y canciones? “Bien, para serte
honesto, esa época queda un poco borrosa en
mi memoria. Literalmente cambió todo para mí.
Toda la escena era increíblemente excitante
y atrevida y, como un chico joven del oeste
de Londres que era yo en esa época, no me
quedaba otra que dejarme impresionar.
“Se trataba principalmente de la música, pero
también era un estilo de vida. Cada miércoles
empezabas a pensar ya en las fiestas a las que
ibas a ir el fin de semana y el viernes por la
noche ya estabas en plena marcha. Para cuando
terminabas, el martes por la mañana, te quedaba
un día para planear el siguiente fin de semana.
Entonces, ¿inspiró esto mis composiciones?
Absolutamente. Era lo único que podía hacer”.
¿Quién te influenció musicalmente durante esa
época? “Realmente, toda la escena. Ya se sabe como era entonces, se
hacía mucha música y había una gran variedad de gente diferente; y
todos habían sido influenciados, de una forma u otra, por las raves”.
‘Killer’ y ‘Crazy’ han superado la prueba del tiempo - ¿podemos esperar
un regreso del sonido dance que te hizo famoso al principio?
“Absolutamente. La música dance se convierte en parte de ti. Cuando
tienes el tipo de experiencias que vivimos todos en esos días – experiencias
religiosas, de algún modo – eso no se va a ninguna parte”.
¿Cómo surgió lo de tu colaboración con DJ Adamski en ‘Killer’?
“A través de amigos. Adam acababa de obtener un gran éxito con
un tema llamado ‘N-R-G’, y estaba haciendo unos temas muy
interesantes en aquel entonces. Yo había escrito esta melodía y una
letra llamada ‘Killer’ pero no había hecho nada con ello. Cuando
unos amigos nos presentaron, simplemente ocurrió que mi melodía
funcionaba perfectamente con un tema instrumental que Adam había
hecho. Grabé las letras y lo publicamos. ¡Así de simple!”.
Tu voz es una de las más características en la música. ¿Cuándo
te diste cuenta de que tenías talento como cantante? “Gracias por
decir eso, y es una pregunta interesante. No tenía mucha confianza
en mi voz, aunque sabía que albergaba un sonido interesante. Tenía
un par de bandas que habían ido más o menos regular pero, no
obstante, la música empezaba a ser cada vez más importante para
mí. De hecho, fue una novia mía la que me compró una guitarra y me
dio el ímpetu necesario para centrarme en mi música. A partir de ahí
todo empezó a encajar bastante rápido”.
¿Cómo cambió tu vida y dio forma a tu carrera el éxito internacional de
tu primer álbum? “Fue una época muy emocionante. Después de lo que
parecía un largo tiempo de ir sorteando los primeros pasos como músico,
cuando despegó, fue todo muy rápido. Pasé muchísimo tiempo en LA –
escribiendo y grabando lo que se convirtiría en mi segundo álbum – y
tuve que trabajar muy duro promocionándolo y de gira. Así que realmente
lo cambió todo. Pero francamente, era algo que siempre había soñado
o, mejor dicho, visualizado. Así que a pesar de que todo cambiaba muy
rápido, en cierto modo me sentía preparado para ello”.

Are you feeling the heat of the current dance
music explosion in America? “I do certainly
sense it, but it’s funny, it’s very different to
back when the scene first evolved in the UK.
The way the genres of dance and hip-hop
have combined in the US has created a different
sound to what we’re used to in the UK.
If anything the closest comparison you can
make is to that of dubstep.”
What themes most engage you when you’re
writing songs? “You pull from everything when
you write. Everything around you: friends,
family, memories, fantasies, concerns, issues,
happiness. I have to admit though that my default
is always towards the more melancholy.
I simply prefer the feeling of chords that are
in a minor key, with nice crunchy suspensions
and stuff.”
You’ve talked in the past about sleeping rough in London before
you found musical success. Do you believe in the notion of the
tortured artist? Do you personally need to experience pain to write
poetry, or are you as creative today – the happy family man – as
you were back then? “Well, that’s a big question. I hope I am as
creative now as I was at the beginning of my career, but I couldn’t
be happier in my private life. So if we were to posit that pain is
directly related to creativity, then the argument breaks down. That
said, yes, I do believe it is important to have experienced everything
life has to offer, and in my case, I’ve got a lot to pull from.
It wasn’t by design, and hell, I’d had rather had a more privileged
and ‘normal’ upbringing. But I didn’t, and I don’t begrudge it at
all. I met some amazing people along the way, and it made me
who I am.”
Your hits have spawned numerous remixes – do you listen to them?
“Well, the ones I loved most recently are Jimpster’s remixes. He’s
done two for me, mainly because I loved the first one he did so much
[‘Here I Am’] that I asked him to do another one! Remixes are great. I
always listen to them, and we’ll be getting a lot more done soon.”
Looking back on a career that spans over two decades, what moments
would you define as career highlights? “I feel very fortunate
to say there have been many great moments. Just thinking about
recent times, I sang for President Obama and the First Lady in the
White House for a Motown tribute concert. That really was a very
special occasion!”
Have you been to Ibiza before? “Unbelievably, I haven’t ever been
before, and I can’t wait!”
So what expectations do you have of the island? “Obviously I know a
lot about it, and I’ve been told about all the places I need to go and
see, so I’m just going to go with the flow and see what happens!”
We’re looking forward to your performance at Pete Tong’s party.
Do you know the man himself? “Only in as much as he has been a
fantastic supporter of mine through the years, and we’ve actually
been trying to find the time to work together for a few years now.
I’m really looking forward to an amazing night at Pacha!”
¿Estás sintiendo el calor de la nueva explosión
de música dance en América? “Ciertamente que
lo siento, pero es gracioso, es muy diferente a
como fue antes, cuando la escena se desarrollo
en el Reino Unido. La forma en que los géneros
de dance y hip hop se han combinado en los
EEUU ha creado un sonido totalmente diferente
al que estamos acostumbrados en el Reino Unido.
Lo más parecido a ello sería el dubstep”.
¿Qué temas te atraen más cuando escribes canciones?
“Tiras de todo cuando estás escribiendo.
Todo lo que te rodea: amigos, familia, recuerdos,
fantasías, preocupaciones, problemas, felicidad.
Tengo que admitir que suelo inclinarme hacia la
melancolía. Simplemente prefiero el sentimiento
de las cuerdas que están en clave menor, con
suaves suspensiones y esas cosas”.
Has hablado en el pasado sobre dormir mal en
Londres antes de encontrar el éxito musical. ¿Crees en la noción del
artista atormentado? ¿Necesitas personalmente experimentar el dolor
para escribir poesía, o eres igual de creativo hoy – feliz hombre de
familia – como lo eras antes? “Bien, esa es una gran pregunta. Espero
ser tan creativo ahora como lo era al principio de mi carrera, pero no
podría ser más feliz en mi vida privada. Así que si tuviéramos que
decir que ese dolor está directamente relacionado con la creatividad,
entonces el argumento fallaría. Dicho esto, sí, creo que es importante
experimentar lo que la vida tiene que ofrecer, y en mi caso, tengo mucho
de donde sacar. No fue por designio o infierno, hubiera preferido
haberme criado de forma privilegiada y ‘normal’. Pero no fue así, y no
tengo envidia ni nada parecido. Conocí a gente fantástica en aquel
entonces, y es lo que me ha hecho ser lo que soy”.
Tus éxitos han engendrado numerosos remixes - ¿los escuchas?
“Bueno, los que más me han gustado recientemente han sido los de
Jimspter. Ha hecho dos de mis temas – principalmente porque me
encantó el primero tanto (‘Here I Am’) que le pedí que hiciera otro.
Los remixes son fantásticos. Siempre los escucho, y pronto tendremos
muchos más”.
Mirando atrás hacia una carrera que se expande sobre dos décadas,
¿qué momentos definirías como los más destacados de tu carrera?
“Me siento afortunado de poder decir que hay muchos momentos fantásticos.
Pensando recientemente, canté para el presidente Obama y la
Primera Dama en la Casa Blanca en un concierto de tributo al Motown.
¡Esa sí fue una ocasión especial!”.
¿Has estado en Ibiza antes? “¡Aunque parezca increíble no he estado allí
antes, pero no puedo esperar!”.
Entonces, ¿qué es lo que te esperas de la isla? “Obviamente sé bastante,
y ya me han hablado de todos los sitios donde tengo que ir y ver, así
que me voy a dejar llevar, a ver lo que pasa”.
¿Tenemos ganas de verte actuar en la fiesta de Pete Tong? ¿Lo conoces?
“Sólo lo conozco porque me ha seguido durante todos estos años, y
de hecho hemos estado buscando el momento de trabajar juntos desde
hace ya unos años. ¡Tengo muchas ganas de pasar una increíble noche
en Pacha!”.
