AGREEMENT ON TRADE AND PAYMENTS BETWEEN THE<br />
UNITED KINGDOM ' OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN<br />
IRELAND AND THE ARGENTINE REPUBLIC<br />
Buenos Aires, 27th June, 1949<br />
The Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain <strong>and</strong> Northern<br />
Irel<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> the Government of the Argentine Republic:<br />
Affirming their comm<strong>on</strong> determinati<strong>on</strong> to maintain the b<strong>on</strong>ds of friendship<br />
<strong>and</strong> to foster the ec<strong>on</strong>omic relati<strong>on</strong>s which have traditi<strong>on</strong>ally united their<br />
peoples ;<br />
Recognising that it is to the mutual advantage of the c<strong>on</strong>tracting Governments<br />
that commercial <strong>and</strong> financial transacti<strong>on</strong>s should be encouraged in<br />
such a manner as to achieve balance of payments at the highest possible level ;<br />
C<strong>on</strong>sidering that it is expedient to take appropriate measures to ensure<br />
the c<strong>on</strong>tinuity <strong>and</strong> expansi<strong>on</strong> of the traditi<strong>on</strong>al interchange of goods <strong>and</strong><br />
services of the two countries ; <strong>and</strong><br />
Believing that these objectives can be achieved by arrangements for the<br />
extended development over a period of several years of ec<strong>on</strong>omic <strong>and</strong> financial<br />
relati<strong>on</strong>s between the two countries:<br />
Have agreed as follows: -<br />
PART I<br />
ARTICLE I<br />
(a) This <str<strong>on</strong>g>Agreement</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> trade <strong>and</strong> payments shall enter into force <strong>on</strong> the<br />
1st July 1949 , <strong>and</strong> shall remain in force for a period of five years from that<br />
date, subject to the right of either c<strong>on</strong>tracting Government to terminate this<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Agreement</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> the 30th June of any year by notice in writing given to the other<br />
c<strong>on</strong>tracting Government not later than the 30th April of that year.<br />
(b) For the p urpose of this <str<strong>on</strong>g>Agreement</str<strong>on</strong>g> the first year shall terminate <strong>on</strong> the<br />
30th June ;' 1950, <strong>and</strong> each subsequent year of this <str<strong>on</strong>g>Agreement</str<strong>on</strong>g> ' shall begin <strong>on</strong><br />
the 1st July <strong>and</strong> shall end <strong>on</strong> the 30th June of each year.<br />
ARTICLE 2<br />
The c<strong>on</strong>tracting Governments shall use their best endeavours to encourage<br />
commercial <strong>and</strong> financial transacti<strong>on</strong>s between the Argentine Republic <strong>and</strong> the<br />
United Kingdom in such a manner as to attain, throughout the period of the<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Agreement</str<strong>on</strong>g>, a balance of sterling payments at the highest possible level.<br />
ARTICLE 3<br />
The c<strong>on</strong>tracting Governments agree to grant all the facilities necessary for<br />
the rapid procurement <strong>and</strong> granting of any import, export <strong>and</strong> exchange<br />
permits, that may be required for the fulfilment of the subsequent Articles of<br />
this <str<strong>on</strong>g>Agreement</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />
