siendo competitivos a escala global.
No. 11 - Primer trimestre 2007
Consolidation
Over the last year CIE Automotive has worked to
implement a very active strategy, designed to reposition
the Group. This involved divesting in activities
considered non-essential for the business, such as the
steel division, together with substantial growth in automotive
components and in new activities, in particular
bio-fuels.
In 2006, the Group increased its business interests
in Mexico through a joint venture agreement with DESC
AUTOMOTRIZ, subsequently joined by Stamping &
Wheels. In Brazil, the Group acquired SADA FORJAS
and entered into a joint venture with DURAMETAL. It
also acquired MATRICON in Rumania.
Another major step was taken last July, when CIE
Automotive bought BIONOR, which immediately made
the Group the heavyweight player in the bio-fuels industry
in Spain, with two factories in operation, one in
the Basque region and the other in Italy, and another
three projects underway at the Port of Ciérvana, Berantevilla
and Huelva.
As the latest Group arrivals in early 2007 (mentioned
elsewhere in this bulletin) make clear, the process
has not finished.
However, it is also evident that now is the time to
consolidate our gains and cement the growth that has
turned CIE into a benchmark business worldwide in its
multi-technology speciality.
To accomplish this, it is necessary to continue to
develop our business management model based on
permanent innovation, total quality and economic efficiency.
Each of these factors is vital to ongoing competitiveness
on the global scale.
We simply cannot afford to forget that we are competing
in the world’s most demanding industry and
that, if we want to stay at the top, we’ve got to consolidate
the advances made to date and improve operational
management.
CIE GAMEKO AL HABLA
CIE GAMEKO SPEAKING
An interview with Manager
Alberto San Martín
Tell us a little about the company
It was founded in 1998 as a Renault outsourcer to
make 50% of its wheel hubs. That was when we were
part of the Gamesa group.
CIE Automotive group acquired it in 2003, and today,
we employ 106 people.
What sort of customers does
CIE Gameko have?
At present, we supply: Reanult and ACI plants in
France, Slovenia, Brazil, etc.; NSK, a Japanese factory
based in UK; and the US factory of the German manufacturer
LUK.
Delphi will become a new customer into 2008 when
we will start machining the Hydraulic Head of the Common
Rail.
Tell us about CIE Gameko’s
investment plans and projects.
In 2003 and 2004 our investments and projects
completely filled the factory.
In 2007 some programs are being reduced, although
we will be working on the industrialization of the
hydraulic head I just mentioned, with SOP in February
2008.
What management system does
CIE Gameko use?
From the beginning, the company has had a TQMbased
management system, which in the last four
years we’ve adapted to the European EFQM model.
Particularly appropriate is our Mission Statement,
stating that our management thinking is to be aligned
with the whole organisation in one unit process.
What is the CIE Gameko strategy
for dealing with future developments
in the automotive industry?
At factory-level, the strategy is based on operational
excellence, and making products with the highest
added value, this being the result of optimizing the
processes flow in a complex machining operation. This
results in being able to offer our customers optimum
quality and service levels at a competitive costs.
A broader Group-related strategy involves our machining
division internationalizing its activities to meet
current market requirements.
We believe that if we implement these two strategic
activities properly, we can satisfy our customers, our
employees, our shareholders and society in general.
AVANZA EN CIE AUTOMETAL TAUBATE
AVANZA AT CIE AUTOMETAL TAUBATE
“Lean Manufacturing”, seleccionando y formando adecuadamente
mantenimiento, compras, administrativos etc., y
Participation of multidisciplinary
teams is the key
In late 2005, following a trip to Japan by a large
group of CIE Automotive executives to study, observe
and learn from companies installed there, the decision
was taken to implement the Avanza program at Tabauté.
To begin with, work began on the Lean Manufacturing
plan, and selecting and training key players in the
implementation process. Clearly oriented towards
achieving economic results, the plan was designed
to boost employee responsibility and authority
in the management of their operational and
economic results. A year later, the implementation
phase was judged to be over. With processes considered
to be robust, the concept being to oriented towards
continual improvement in line with the Kaizen concept.
Perhaps the main key to success was the participation
of multi-disciplinary teams, this comprised
people from engineering, production, quality,
maintenance, purchasing and administration, and
with support of management checking of actions taken
on both projects in development and implmented.
In 5S, the teams established a routine of audit visits
to production cells. At the end of
the year, the production cell with the
best audit results was rewarded with
a barbecue organized for cell members
and relatives.
Turning now to SMED, the introduction
of rapid-change tools achieved
a balance in the production of
transmission component supplier cells. The investment
in new tools also brought about major ergonomic improvements
at workstations and in manufacturing times,
enhancing production quite considerably.
Other key activities included identifying the features
of the factory, such as floors, work areas
and parts, facilitating visual management. Also figuring
high on the list of key actions were the preventive
maintenance plans, reviewed weekly, involving the
“bottleneck teams” and improvements in corrective
maintenance with effective reductions of up to 40% on
downtimes. Introducing several Poka Yokes also contributed
to a substantial improvement in production quality.
None of these achievements would have been possible
without the full involvement and participation of
the staff. With a view to presenting our customers with
further improvements in quality, price and service, our
suppliers and customers are also involved in the ongoing
search for internal improvements.
Se busca aumentar la
eficiencia de procesos
DESARROLLO DE FORJA
DEVELOPMENTS IN FORGING
Actualmente se están trabajando diferentes
proyectos de desarrollo asociados al proceso de
forja.
Looking to improve process
efficiency
Work is currently going ahead on a number of
forging process development projects, on which
divisional engineering units are cooperating with the
development office in Berriz. Projects underway are
essentially designed to increase the efficiency of
existing processes and/or develop new forging
technologies.
To improve existing processes, attention is concentrated
largely on the consumption of raw materials
and costs associated with dies. In developing
new technologies, the traditional process of
trial and error is replaced by quicker, more efficient
modeling and virtual testing, determining the
variables involved.
Projects designed to reduce the consumption of raw
materials in existing processes include
one to reduce the burring or flash
in crankshaft forging. Here process
simulation tools were used to determine
optimum geometry and position
for the original block and the redesign
of preliminary operation dies.
Others launched to reduce the
cost of tools include one that seeks
to increase the useful life of dies. To
that end, after simulating the work
cycle, the critical zones of the tool
are identified. Such zones may be
produced by wear (in which case recoating,
surface treatments or materials
insertion would be required) or
breakage (making tool redesign necessary).
At present, studies of this type are underway
in crankshaft dies.
New process developments now open include
projects on pin closing, two-shot cycle and floating die
forging. The first is designed to determine the geometries
of the outer die and pre-form in the forging
process as a way of closing the pin and filling the die
correctly. The second aims to introduce the cold calibrated
pass into the semi-hot forging operation. And,
finally, the third seeks to eliminate post-operation burr
completely, thereby reducing raw materials consumption
and eliminating the deburring operation.
CIE cooperates with a number of technology centers,
depending on their knowledge of the technical
areas the group wants to develop, which may include
simulation, laser recoating, cryogenizations, ceramic
inserts and so on.
