Misión y Objetivos:
The Belize Audubon Society (BAS) is a non-governmental
organization dedicated to the sustainable management of our
natural resources through leadership and strategic partnerships with
stakeholders in order to create a balance between people and the
environment. Under an agreement with the Government of Belize,
BAS manages 8 protected areas covering over 162,000 acres and
runs environmental advocacy and education programmes focusing
on protecting the integrity of these areas.
Actividades:
Advocacy, policy, lobbing, fundraising, education, conservation /
environmental protection and management.

Parks, protected areas, land use, recreation, wilderness.
Biomasas de Interés:
Coastal zones, forests, freshwaters, rivers, lakes, marine, mountain,
wetlands.
Actividades Actuales:
The development of Cockscomb Basin and Crooked Tree Wildlife
Sanctuaries as centers for co-management of protected areas,
funded by the European Union and lasting 4 years. The objective
of this project is to involve local stakeholders in ecosystems'
management and to promote biological diversity and ecological
integrity through sustainable development activities.
The Conservation of the Lighthouse Reef Atoll (ConLiR) Program,
funded by Summit, aims to conserve the globally significant
biodiversity on Lighthouse Reef Atoll, in order to sustain multiple
uses including tourism, fishing, research, education, and public
appreciation. Particular attention is paid to protecting the Natural
Monuments of Half Moon Caye and Blue Hole (part of the Belize
Barrier Reef World Heritage Site), located within the Atoll.
Sustaining the Long-term Integrity of Protected Areas managed
by the Belize Audubon Society through Environmental Advocacy
is funded by Hivos, and focuses on strengthening protected areas
legislation, and the governance & management of the protected
areas system and securing the integrity of BAS protected areas
by mobilizing buffer-zone communities and other stakeholders in
targeted advocacy activities.
Logros:
Effective Management of eight protected areas for the government
and people of Belize through a formal agreement with the
government.
Drafting of a strategic plan and a Development concept for the
Belize Audubon Society.
Piloting of co-management structure for the management of two of
the eight protected areas.
