Misión y Objetivos:<br />

The Belize Audubon Society (BAS) is a non-governmental<br />

organization dedicated to the sustainable management of our<br />

natural resources through leadership and strategic partnerships with<br />

stakeholders in order to create a balance between people and the<br />

environment. Under an agreement with the Government of Belize,<br />

BAS manages 8 protected areas covering over 162,000 acres and<br />

runs environmental advocacy and education programmes focusing<br />

on protecting the integrity of these areas.<br />

Actividades:<br />

Advocacy, policy, lobbing, fundraising, education, conservation /<br />

environmental protection and management.<br />

Temas Centrales:<br />

Parks, protected areas, land use, recreation, wilderness.<br />

Biomasas de Interés:<br />

Coastal zones, forests, freshwaters, rivers, lakes, marine, mountain,<br />

wetlands.<br />

Actividades Actuales:<br />

The development of Cockscomb Basin and Crooked Tree Wildlife<br />

Sanctuaries as centers for co-management of protected areas,<br />

funded by the European Union and lasting 4 years. The objective<br />

of this project is to involve local stakeholders in ecosystems'<br />

management and to promote biological diversity and ecological<br />

integrity through sustainable development activities.<br />

The Conservation of the Lighthouse Reef Atoll (ConLiR) Program,<br />

funded by Summit, aims to conserve the globally significant<br />

biodiversity on Lighthouse Reef Atoll, in order to sustain multiple<br />

uses including tourism, fishing, research, education, and public<br />

appreciation. Particular attention is paid to protecting the Natural<br />

Monuments of Half Moon Caye and Blue Hole (part of the Belize<br />

Barrier Reef World Heritage Site), located within the Atoll.<br />

Sustaining the Long-term Integrity of Protected Areas managed<br />

by the Belize Audubon Society through Environmental Advocacy<br />

is funded by Hivos, and focuses on strengthening protected areas<br />

legislation, and the governance & management of the protected<br />

areas system and securing the integrity of BAS protected areas<br />

by mobilizing buffer-zone communities and other stakeholders in<br />

targeted advocacy activities.<br />

Logros:<br />

Effective Management of eight protected areas for the government<br />

and people of Belize through a formal agreement with the<br />

government.<br />

Drafting of a strategic plan and a Development concept for the<br />

Belize Audubon Society.<br />

Piloting of co-management structure for the management of two of<br />

the eight protected areas.<br />
