Desde la desaparición en 1993 del Festival de
Cine Imaginario y de Ciencia-Ficción, Imagfic, en
Madrid no existía un Festival Internacional
competitivo centrado en el género fantástico
como tal. Ante esta situación, y conocedores de
la necesidad, José Luis Alemán, Sergio Molina y
un servidor, durante la presentación del
documental sobre Paul Naschy, The man who
saw Frankenstein cry, en el Fantasporto de
2010, decidieron cambiar esta situacion.
De esta forma, se comienzan a establecer los
primeros contactos hasta que hoy con José Luis
Alemán y Sergio Molina en la producción y yo
mismo en la dirección, el Festival se convierte
en una realidad.
Nocturna, Festival Internacional de Cine
Fantástico de Madrid, nace para cubrir un
importante hueco que los aficionados al cine
fantástico y de terror reclamaban. Y llega a la
escena de festivales de género con la intención
de consagrarse como una de las citas ineludibles
para los aficionados al cine fantástico y de terror
del país. Con una programación donde se
estrenarán las últimas producciones de género
en su más amplio espectro: terror, fantasía,
ciencia ficción, thriller, animación; y con la
presencia de invitados de primer nivel.

¡Bienvenidos a Nocturna 2013!
Since the closure of the Festival of Imaginarium
and Science Fiction Cinema in 1993 (Imagfic),
Madrid has been without an international film
festival focused on the fantastic genre. Conscious
of this fact, José Luis Alemán (Director of "The
Valdemar Legacy", Sergio Molina (Paul Naschy's
son) and myself decided to change it and give
Madrid the International Fantastic Film Festival
that this big European capital deserves.
Since the very first meeting in Fantasporto 2010,
this trio of fantastic film lovers have made the
contacts and now (with José Luis Aleman and
Sergio Molina as producers and me as director),
the festival has become a reality.
Nocturna, Madrid International Fantastic Film
Festival was created to fill this major gap for the
thousands of Madrid-based fans of fantasy and
horror cinema. And it breaks into the genre film
festival scene to establish itself as one of the major
events for hardcore fans and the general public in
Spain. The schedule will include screening of the
latest premieres in the full scope of the fantastic
genre: horror, fantasy, science fiction, thriller,
animation... all in the presence of A-level
celebrities, on-hand for the event.

Tras el enorme éxito del film Dante volvió a
trabajar con Spielberg en El Chip Prodigioso y
Gremlins 2: La Nueva Generación. Su último
film ha sido Miedos 3D y actualmente prepara
dos nuevos títulos que comenzará a filmar
próximamente.

Mick Garris (Santa Monica, California, 1951) is an
American filmmaker and screenwriter, best
known for his adaptations of Stephen King
stories, such as directing Sleepwalkers, Critters 2,
Psicosis IV, Ridding the bullet, etc. and is the
creator of the Showtime series Masters of
Horror. Garris won a 1986 Edgar Award for an
episode he wrote for the Steven Spielbergproduced
television series Amazing Stories.
Garris directed the FEARnet web series Post
Mortem. He hosted the documentary about Paul
Naschy The man who saw Frankenstein cry,
directed by Angel Agudo. Since this year he
contributes to the web series Trailers From Hell.
Most recently, he directed the miniseries adaption
of Stephen King's novel Bag of Bones.

la Universidad de Paris en 1978, Samuel Hadida
fundó Metropolitan Filmexport, compañía con la
que ha distribuído más de un centenar de
películas en Francia y países francófonos,
incluyento títulos como Seven, número uno en la
taquilla francesa en 1996. En 1990, Hadida creó
Davis Films, una compañía creada para producir
proyectors internacionales como Amor a
quemarropa, dirigida por Tony Scott y escrita por
Quentin Tarantino o Killing Zoe, de Roger Avary.
Entre los títulos producidos por Hadida se
encuentran Crying Freeman, de Christophe Gans,
H. P. Lovecraft's Necronomicon, Pinocho, el
blockbuster Pacto de lobos, la nueva adaptación
de Conan, el bárbaro, y la saga Resident Evil.

NOCTURNA PARALLEL EVENTS
Dos días y ocho películas serán las encargadas de
calentar el ambiente antes del arranque oficial de
Nocturna 2013 en la sala Artistic Metropol
(Cigarreras, 6) Así, el sábado 1 de junio, podrá verse
la película de animación nipona, King of Thorn, que
narra como después de que un misterioso virus,
denominado Medusa, se extiendese por Japón el
gobierno criogenizó a varios infectados. Años
después Kasumi, una de las infectadas, despertará
de su letargo para enfrentarse al caos absoluto y a
unas monstruosas criaturas que campan por
doquier. El sábado también podrán verse la trilogía
de Tetsuo, compuesta por Tetsuo: The Iron Man, su
secuela Tetsuo II: Body Hammer, y Tetsuo: The
Bullet Man, todas ellas dirigidas por Shinya
Tsukamoto, en una maratón especial de entrada
gratuita en colaboración con Canal+ Xtra. Tetsuo
cuenta la asfixiante odisea de un hombre en lucha
continua contra su propio entorno. Un entorno
absorbido por la tecnología y el pesimismo de una
sociedad en decadencia.
El domingo 2 será el turno de la coreana The
Thieves, de Choi Dong Hoon, que cuenta las
aventuras de un grupo de ladrones que intentarán
hacerse con un diamante conocido como la
lágrima del sol; la mexicana Generation Last, de
Joel Juarez, en la que unos niños deben sobrevivir
solos en la Tierra ya que la humanidad ha
abandonado el planeta para habitar en unos
satélites orbitales; La norteamericana Dark Circles,
de Paul Soter, que narra el asedio al que se verá
sometida una pareja, al trasladarse a su nuevo
hogar, por el espíritu de una extraña mujer; y
cerrará este preNOCTURNA, la también
norteamericana After, dirigida por Ryan Smith, en
la que dos supervivientes a un accidente de
autobús despiertan en un hospital, donde
descubren que son las únicas personas vivas de la
ciudad. Una oscura niebla avanza hacia la ciudad
por lo que deciden aliarse para desentrañar la
verdad de su aislamiento y escapar de unas voraces
criaturas que se ocultan en la niebla.
Two days and eight films will be responsible for
heating things up before the Madrid International
Fantastic Film Festival officially gets underway in
the Artistic Metropol cinema (Cigarreras, 6). To
start things off, on Saturday, June 1st, don’t miss
Japanese animated film King of Thorn. After a
mysterious virus named Medusa spreads across
Japan, the government puts several infected people
into suspended animation. Years later, Kasumi, one
of these victims, awakens from her slumber to face
absolute chaos and monstrous creatures that are
everywhere. Also on Saturday, catch the Tetsuo

absorbed by the technology and pessimism of a
society in decay.
On Sunday the 2nd, Korean Choi Dong Hoon’s
The Thieves will take to the screen, recounting
the adventures of a group of thieves that try to
steal a diamond known as the sun’s tear. Also,
Mexican film Generation Last, by Joel Juarez, in
which some children must survive alone on
Earth after it is abandoned by humans who have
gone to live in orbiting satellites; then Dark
Circles, a film by Paul Soter from the United
States that tells the story of the horrors a family
faces from the ghost of a strange woman after
moving into their new home. Finally, this
preNOCTURNA weekend will close with the film
After. Directed by Ryan Smith and also from the
United States, it depicts two survivors of a bus
accident who wake up in a hospital and discover
that they are the only living people in the entire
city. A dark fog moves towards the city and so
they decide to work together to find out the truth
behind their isolation and escape from the
vicious creatures hiding in the mist.

Durante todo junio podrá verse una selección de
las portadas de la colección de novelas
Luchadores del Espacio publicadas en las décadas
de los cincuenta y sesenta, dotadas de una fantasía
infinita y una riqueza plástica inigualable que ya
han pasado a formar parte de la iconografía del
género en nuestro país. Su autor, José Luis Macías
Sampedro (Andújar, Jaén, 1929), es el ilustrador
más famoso e influyente de la ciencia ficción
española.
Una exposición organizada y producida por Flash-
Back para Nocturna 2013, con Antonio Busquets
como comisario. Con el patrocinio de Ediciones
Babylon y la colaboración de Artistic Metropol,
Bodegas Neo y Scifiworld.

GAME OF THRONES SEASON 3 EPISODE 09

La tercera temporada de Juego de Tronos, en
emisión en Canal+, estará presente en
NOCTURNA, Festival Internacional de Cine
Fantástico de Madrid, el próximo 4 de junio a las
19:15h en el Cine Palafox (C/Luchana 15, Madrid),
y lo hará a lo grande con el preestreno del
noveno episodio, Las Lluvias de Castamere, en
VOS a menos de 48 horas después de su emisión
en EEUU. Como cada temporada, este penúltimo
episodio supondrá un importante y espectacular
punto de inflexión en la serie de HBO basada en
la saga literaria de George R.R. Martin.
Asistirá al preestreno Natalie Dormer, la actriz
británica que interpreta a Margaery Tyrell, la futura
esposa del rey Jeoffrey y que paseará por la
alfombra roja del festival para deleite de los fans.
El evento será de entrada gratuita hasta
completar aforo. Los fans que deseen asistir
deberán recoger su entrada, completamente
gratis, en las taquillas del Cine Palafox (máximo
dos entradas por persona).
The third season of Game of Thrones, airing on
Canal+, will take center stage at NOCTURNA,
the Madrid International Fantastic Film
Festival, on June 4th at 19:15 at Cines Palafox
(C/Luchana 15, Madrid), with the preview of
the seasons’ ninth episode, The Rains of
Castamere, in VOS, less than 48 hours after its
airing in the United States. As with previous
seasons, this penultimate episode will feature
a significant and shocking twist to this HBO
series that is based on the books by George
R.R. Martin.
Natalie Dormer, the English actress who
plays Margaery Tyrell in the series – the future
wife of King Jeoffrey – will be on-hand for the
preview and to delight fans on the festival’s
red carpet.
Attendance to the event is free, until full capacity.
Those fans that wish to attend can pick up their
complementary ticket in the Cine Palafox ticket
booth (limit of two tickets per person).

¿Qué tienen en común las criaturas de La historia
interminablecon la serpiente de gigante de Conan
el bárbaro, o con los miles de litros de sangre
derramados por los pasillos del hotel de El
resplandor...?. La respuesta: que todo ello fue
realizado por un técnico en maquillaje y efectos
especiales inglés, excelente escultor, que trabaja en
películas tan importantes como Alien, El imperio
del solo La hija de Ryan. Su nombre, Colin H. Arthur.
En sus memorias, Arnold Schwarzenegger cita
tres nombres importantes en el rodaje de Conan.
Junto al de Ron Cobb, y Terry Leonard, el de Colin
Arthur. El libro Colin Arthur. Criaturas,
maquillajes y efectos especiales de Víctor
Matellano, repasa la apasionante trayectoria de
Arthur desde sus inicios como escultor en el
londinense museo de cera de Madame Tussauds.
Cómo colabora con Stuart Freeborn, el creador de
Yoda de la serie Star Wars, para idear y fabricar los
simios de 2001, una odisea del espacio. O cómo
maquilla a Vincent Price para transformarle en el
Dr. Phibes. O su decisiva colaboración con el
mago los efectos especiales, Ray Harryhausen, en
películas tan memorables como El viaje
fantástico de Simbad o Furia de titanes.

Which one are the coincidences between: The
Neverending story´s creatures, Conan the
Barbarian´s giant snake or the tons of blood spilt
over The Shining Hotel´s corridor?. The answer
is: all of those were made by a make-up artist and
special effects technician, a wonderful sculptor
who works in such an important movies like
Alien, Empire of the Sun or Ryan's Daughter.
His name, Colin H. Arthur.
Three important people in Conan shoot are
named in Arnold Schwarzenegger´s memoires:
Ron Cobb, Terry Leonard, and Colin Arthur. Colin
Arthur. Creatures, make-up and special
effects by Victor Matellano, makes a review
throught the amazing Arthur´s career from the
beginnig as an sculptor in Madame Tussauds,
London´s Wax Museum . Colin collaborated with
Stuart Freeborn, Yoda´s creator, Star Wars. Colin
made the simians in 2001: A Space Odissey.
How he did Vincent Price make-up to turn him
into Dr. Phibes. Colin collaborate with Ray
Harryhausen, the special effects´ magician, in so
many movies, unforgettable movies like The

aparece de pronto en una casa donde conviven
a la fuerza un grupo de 9 niños olvidados.
