ABSTRACT
Mela-Osorio NA, Escobar-Medina FJ, Aréchiga-Flores CF, de la Colina-Flores F. Utilization of new or
reused once or twice Controlled Intravaginal Device Progesterone-Releaser (CIDR) to synchronize
recipient bovine females in embryo transfer programs. Estrus synchronization response was evaluated
using a new or recycled CIDR’s (1x or 2x) in Brown Swiss or Simmental x Brahman cattle females crosses
(n=90). CIDR’s remained intravaginally during 7 d. At the time of CIDR implantation, an estradiol benzoate
(EB 2ml, IM) was also administered. Estrus detection was performed at 45-49 h, 51-55 h and 57-62 h after
CIDR removal. 1) New CIDR’s were utilized in heifers (n=30; BCS=3; scale 1-5); Re-utilized CIDR’s (1x)
were utilized in heifers (n=25) and multiparous cows (n=5; BCS=5; 1-5 calvings), and re-used (2x) in heifers
(n=15) and cows (n=15). Bovine females received an embryo 7 d after estrus detection and presence of
corpora lutea was evaluated by rectal palpation. Pregnancy diagnosis was performed 60 d after estrus
detection. Most of bovine females showed estrus 29-33 h after removal of new, used 1x or used 2x CIDR’s
(93.3%, 86.7% and 73.3%, respectively). In the same way, 90%, 83.3% and 83.3% showed at last one corpus
luteum at the time of embryo transfer, respectively. Pregnancy diagnosis by rectal palpation was 63.3%,
56.7% y 60% by using new, re-used (1x) and re-used (2x) CIDR’s, respectively. In conclusion, CIDR
represent an option to synchronize estrus in recipient bovine females (F1: Brown Swiss or Simmental x
Brahman crosses) included in embryo transfer programs, either as new CIDR or recycled ones or even twice.
