MAYAN PRAYER
by the National Conference of Ministers of Mayan Spirituality in Guatemala
Oh, Creator, Heart of Heaven, Heart of the Earth,
Heart of Fire, Heart of Air, Heart of Water!
Oh, First Mothers, First Fathers, First Grandmothers and First Grandfathers,
Look at us, hear us!
We give you thanks, Heart of Heaven, Heart of the Earth, Grandmothers and Grandfathers,
for life, for health, for the well-being that you give us. For happiness, hopes and the dreams
of a better future. Everything good makes us happy, but oppression, exclusion and the
poverty in our countries cause us great pain and suffering.
We still talk about the hope that this will have to change. And it will change with each and
every one of us.
This is why we lift our eyes to a new dawn, to a sunset, to the wind, to the four cardinal
points, to the four corners of the Universe.
We give you thanks for the life and energy of Mother Earth, the mountains, the forests;
thank you for the life and the energy of the Water, the rain, the rivers, the lagoons, the
seas and the springs of water; thank you for the life and the energy of the animals and the
birds; thank you for the vegetables, the fruit, the plants and our sacred maize; thank you
for the life and energy of the clouds, the mists; thank you for the life and energy of the sun,
the moon, the stars and the constellations.
Thank you, Creator, for life, thank you, Creator, for the life of the human being, because we
have a heart, veins, brains, eyes, a nose, ears, arms, muscles, hands, feet and fingers. We
feel, we think and we walk.
Thank you, because in Mother Earth there are different nations, peoples and cultures; thank
you for the variety of thinking, of understanding, of cosmovisions, of languages and for so
much biological diversity.
Thank you, Creator, because in every culture, nation and people, there are women and men
of faith, women and men with wisdom, women and men of prudence, prophets, thinkers,
humanists, women and men of hope.
We ask for wisdom, orientation and strength to carry out our mission, that every one of us
has been given. That we may use our gifts, our capacities and skills for good, to serve
others, serve our neighbour, our family, our communities, our people and our nation.

We ask for wisdom to defend and care for our Mother Earth: the mountains, the forests, the
cliffs and caves, the birds and animals. We ask for courage, strength and tenacity to defend
our natural environment: the air, the rivers, the lakes and seas that every day are put in
danger by human beings.
We ask for wisdom to fulfill our mission of being prophetic facing neocolonialism,
technicism, developmentism, genetic manipulation and piratry of natural resources and
expropriation of lands and territories of the peoples, especially the indigenous peoples.
We ask for real power to dialogue for tolerance and respect between the different
confessions and creeds, to work together for unity of the nations, and for the peoples that
make up Guatemala.
Only in this way will we feel, live, celebrate and proclaim peace, justice and the hope of the
world.

¡Oh Creador-Formador, Corazón del Cielo-Corazón de la Tierra,
Corazón del Fuego, Corazón del Aire, Corazón del Agua!
¡Oh Primeras Madres, Primeros Padres, Primeras Abuelas y Primeros Abuelos,
mírennos, escúchennos...!
Gracias les damos Corazón del Cielo-Corazón de la Tierra, Abuelas y Abuelos por la vida,
por la salud, por el bienestar que nos conceden. Por las alegrías, las esperanzas y los
sueños por un mejor futuro. Nos alegra todo lo bueno, pero nos causa tanto dolor y
sufrimiento la exclusión, la opresión y el empobrecimiento que aún prevalece en nuestros
países.
A pesar, aún conversamos la esperanza que todo esto tendrá que cambiar. Y empezará a
cambiar con cada una y cada uno de nosotros.
Es por ello que inclinamos nuestra mirada en la salida del sol, en la caída del sol, en la
salida del aire, en los cuatro puntos cardinales, en las cuatro esquinas y cuatros rincones del
Universo.
Damos gracias por la vida y la energía de la Madre Tierra, las montañas, los bosques;
gracias por la vida y la energía del Agua, la lluvia, los ríos, las lagunas, los mares, grutas y
nacimientos de aguas; gracias por la vida y la energía de los animales y las Aves; gracias
por las verduras, las frutas, las plantas y nuestro Sagrado Maíz; gracias por la vida y la
energía de las nubes, las neblinas; gracias por la vida y energía del Sol, la Luna, las
Estrellas y las constelaciones.
Gracias Creador-Formador por la vida, gracias Creador-Formador por la vida del ser humano
porque tenemos un corazón, venas, pulmones, cerebros, ojos, nariz, oído, brazos,
músculos, manos, pies y dedos. Sentimos, pensamos y andamos.
Gracias porque en la madre tierra existimos diversas naciones, pueblos y culturas; gracias
por la diversidad de pensamientos, de conocimientos, de cosmovisiones, de idiomas y tanta
diversidad biológica.
Gracias Creador-Formador porque en todas las culturas, naciones y pueblos hay mujeres y
hombres de fe, mujeres y hombres con sabiduría, mujeres y hombres prudentes, profetas,
pensadores, humanistas, mujeres y hombres de esperanzas.
Pedimos sabiduría, orientación y fuerza para ejercer nuestra misión que a cada uno se nos
ha encomendado. Que podamos utilizar nuestros dones, nuestras capacidades y habilidades
para el bien, para servir a los demás, servir a nuestro prójimo, nuestra familia, nuestras
comunidades, nuestro pueblo y nuestra nación.
Pedimos sabiduría para defender y cuidar la vida de la madre tierra, de las montañas, de
los bosques, de los barrancos, de las cuevas, de las aves y los animales.

Pedimos valor, fuerza y tenacidad para defender nuestro entorno natural, el aire, los ríos,
los lagos y los mares que cada día son puestos en peligro por el mismo ser humano.
Pedimos sabiduría para cumplir con la misión de ser profetas ante el neocolonialismo,
tecnicismo, desarrollismo, la manipulación genética y la piratería de los recursos naturales y
la expropiación de tierras y territorios de los pueblos, especialmente de los pueblos
indígenas.
Pedimos al Creador-Formador poder realmente practicar el diálogo, la tolerancia y el respeto
entre las distintas confesiones y credos para trabajar juntos por la unidad de las naciones y
los pueblos que conforman Guatemala.
Solo así sentiremos, viviremos, celebraremos y proclamaremos la paz, la justicia y la
esperanza en el mundo.
