Las estructuras turísticas del Ariège y del Berguedà se asociaron
en un planteamiento común de calidad y de gestión medioambiental para
darle a descubrir sus comarcas.
Trabajar juntos para un mejor desarrollo de sus territorios y una valoración
de sus patrimonios, asegurando y preservando la calidad medioambiental,
es una voluntad común muy fuerte.
Mediante las tres temáticas que hicieron su historia, su riqueza y su fama, descubra
ambos territorios tan diferentes y sin embargo tan próximos.

Las Rutas del Catarismo y de la Edad Media:
¿qué son estas rutas?
◗ Circuitos turísticos de visitas
Las Rutas del Catarismo y de la Edad Media les proponen visitas insólitas, podrán
encontrar información en las oficinas de turismo de Ariège, así como toda la documentación
necesaria acerca de circuitos temáticos en el Berguedà, sin olvidar
el camino de senderismo transfronterizo: “El Camino de los Hombres Buenos” (GR
107).
Durante las visitas, encontrarán en dichos circuitos, hoteles, campings, restaurantes,
refugios, albergues de etapa y casas de huéspedes con el sello de Gîtes de
France o Clevacances, establecimientos apasionados por el catarismo y la edad
media. Igualmente comprometidos en la gestión medioambiental.
◗ Profesionales preparados
Todos estos profesionales se han comprometido a asistir al menos a tres sesiones
de información de las 12 sesiones propuestas por la Agencia del Desarrollo Turístico
de Ariège-Pirineos. Así pues, no duden en consultarnos para obtener algunas
recomendaciones acerca de las visitas o para conocer algún detalle en particular
de dicha época!
Además, dichos circuitos se elaboran dentro de un compromiso de respeto en
lo que concierne la gestión medioambiental (gestión del agua, de desechos, de
energía…).

Encontrarán seguramente en el alojamiento que hayan elegido, un arca de madera
compuesto de una historieta, novelas, libros infantiles, juegos, videos,… que
su huésped tendrá el placer de hacerles descubrir!

Para impregnarse un poco más de aquella época medieval, les esperamos en uno
de los alojamientos o restaurantes de estas rutas: todos los establecimientos (salvo
hoteles y casa de huéspedes) les proponen animaciones acerca del catarismo
y de la Edad Media en julio y en agosto o platos por encargo, realizados con ingredientes
de la época medieval.

What are they?
◗ Tourist route circuits
Medieval and Cathar routes suggest sites to visit from the Ariègeois Tourism Offices as
well as themed circuits in the Bergueda, not omitting the cross-border walking route,
the Countryman’s Road (GR107).
To complement your visits, you will find hotels, camping sites, restaurants, refuges,
boarding and guest houses along the way under the banner of Gîtes de France or
Clevacances that are imbued with enthusiasm for the Cathars and middle ages, and
committed to environmental management.
◗ Trained professionals
All of these professionals have to undertake at least 3 sessions of knowledge training
from a possible 12 which are accredited by the Ariège-Pyrenees Tourism Development
Agency. So don’t miss the chance to ask them their advice or for details about
the era!
What’s more, they all are committed to improving ways to better manage the environment
around their establishments (water management, recycling, energy…).

Whatever lodging you choose , you will for sure find a wooden box containing novels,
cartoons, books for children, games, videos… which your host would love you
to enjoy!

To get even further into the spirit of the medieval era, meet up in one of the lodgings

houses) will offer either shows about Catharism/the middle ages during July and August

Miradas Cruzadas en los tiempos de los Cátaros y de
los edificadores románicos
De tanto nombrar aquellos tiempos en los que denominamos un poco pronto
“Edad-Media”, estos mismos, terminaron por desaparecer en la bruma de nuestros
recuerdos, grabando por supuesto en nuestro pensamiento, nuestros paisajes
y nuestra relación al mundo. Escalando la cadena pirenaica para ofrecer un
saludo a las sierras españolas, se consideró rapidamente, una barrera de difícil
paso, este hecho arrinconaba desde antiguos tiempos a los habitantes de cada
vertiente hacia sus llanuras respectivas… Pero nuestros antepasados que sólo
tuvieron sus piernas y las de las mulas para descubrir esos lugares, eran muy modestos
y tenazes! En la mayor parte del tiempo, dichos montes representaron un
lazo de unión entre los pueblos, más que un muro de separación.
Siguiendo el rebaño de los carneros
¿Quién sabe si los primeros en pasar de un lado a otro de las cimas no fueron los
carneros? La hierba fue siempre más verde en el prado del vecino y más todavía,
del otro lado de la montaña. Desde las deambulaciones del rebaño, tan antiguas
como la domesticación, se negociaron muy pronto en el norte como al sur, acuerdos
que oficializaron los famosos enlaces y pasajes de la ocupación de las altas
tierras. Desde el siglo 13, dichos acuerdos se redactaron, pero aquellos pliegos
significaron simplemente una prolongación de las antiguas tradiciones en las altas
montañas.
La autoridad local de cada territorio tomó acta de las costumbres profundamente
inscritas, en una verdadera voluntad de compartir el territorio del alma pirenaica.
Estos últimos, se deshicieron muy pronto de todas aquellas obligaciones feudales,
conociendo el valor relativo de la democracia; constituyendo en los territorios,
sistemas consulares elegidos por el jefe de las casas. Así pues, se cruzaría
la montaña naturalmmente con la huellas del rebaño, en cualquier momento y
época; los heréticos perseguidos por la justicia y proscritos de toda clase que encontraron
a menudo una vida mejor, cruzando hacia el otro lado de los montes y
desapareciendo discretamente bajo el manto de otros cielos.
“Pies de polvo” y cortadores de piedra
Otros caminantes de estas cimas pasaron desde tiempos antiguos la gran ola rocosa
que separa hoy en día Ariège y Cataluña : comerciantes de todo tipo, pasantes
desconocidos o convoys de mulas , iban también travesando las montañas. La
sal de Cardonna indispensable en el condado de Foix, el hierro de Rancié se transportaba
en parte, por el llamado Valferrer, las sábanas de Toulouse por los muleros
del Berguedà, travesando el Puymorens, ya conocido en el siglo 11 como “vía

de los comerciantes”, en el puerto de Salau circulaban cada año un gran número
de peregrinos y comerciantes que dificilmente podían encontrarse solos por los
caminos de los puertos de Fontargente, Bouet, Aula o de Urets. Todos estos parajes
fueron repertoriados como lugares de pasaje. Sabedor de la importancia del
comercio transfronterizo en su condado, Roger Bernard III de Foix, liberó a los comerciantes
aragoneses de las tasas habituales para que pudiesen conceder a su
vez, el mismo trato y privilegio a los comerciantes de Foix en Aragón. Un tratado
de libre cambio de alguna manera, y era… 1265! De otra parte, de los numerosos
puntos de peaje, en cuyos archivos medievales se ha conservado la huella de la
realidad de dichos intercambios: en aquellos tiempos fueron… tejidos únicos ,
especias, cuero y metales preciosos circulaban por estas altas tierras, uniendo así,
las grandes urbes: Barcelona y Toulouse.
Siguiendo las huellas de los pies de polvo –era con este bonito nombre que se
les denominaba a los comerciantes ambulantes de aquella época – los maestros
“edificadores” no se hicieron esperar.
Los primeros evangelizadores, habiendo tenido la buena idea de obrar anteriormente
entre las dos vertientes montañosas, no podían hacer menos! El ingenio
del arte románico se extendió de forma natural de Foix a Berga, recogiendo e
integrando las influencias cruzadas llegadas del norte. El estilo Lombard, que se
extendió en la alta Cataluña bajo la influencia del enérgico obispo Oliba de Berga
(por y para las necesidades de la lucha de la influencia islámica) donó a las iglesias
de Unac y Mérens, sus campanas – torres y otras muchas edificaciones famosas
pandillas lombardas que vestían las ábsides y absidiolas. En el norte, la influencia
se extendió a partir de de la fabulosa obra de San-Sernin de Toulouse, obra maestra
del segundo arte románico, especialmente a través de sus esculturas.
Pero la obra artística de los Pirinéos más relevante, se concentra probablemente
en las pinturas murales. Maestros, probablemente italianos o de influencia, recorrían
las montañas de norte a sur, dejando en cada lugar un poco de su ingenio.
Con el cruce de influencias, los talleres de Pedret y de Saint-Lizier crearon una
unidad de estilo a través de una obra excepcional que ha conseguido perdurar a
través de los siglos y llegar a nuestros días… De este legado, tanto al norte como
al sur, las prestigiosas ciudades episcopales de Saint-Lizier y de la Seu d’Urgell,
poseen en sus alrededores, un buen número de pequeñas iglesias sorprendentemente
bien conservadas : Vic d’Oust, San Serni de Tavèrnoles, Vals, Coll de Nargó,
Unac, Bescaran o Axiat, comunicando entre ellas y a distancia la misma historia;
el lenguaje del secreto de las piedras y el de sus primeros edificadores.
Familias a caballo por las montañas
Cuales fuesen los pasajes de montaña, estos intercambios y esta vida común entre
las dos vertientes, no hubiera podido estrecharse sin un mínimo de interés
del poder político, ubicado al pie de las montañas. Tanto al norte como al sur.
En tiempos del reino visigodo, existía un único poder de Toulouse a Barcelona
y así fue, sin dificultad alguna. Después del episodio Franco, las familias nobles
encontraron sus antiguas raices, volviendo a crear las relaciones sociales de la
época feudal. Por necesidad política y mediante las bodas, hablando el mismo
idioma y queriendo alcanzar los mismos objetivos, dichos territorios un poco dispersos,
encontraron su fuerza en una compleja red de alianzas. Así pues, el rey de
Aragón, poseía numerosas tierras desde el Comminges hasta Montpellier, mientras
que el conde de Foix reinaba como un gran dueño en numerosos territorios
catalanes. Símbolo evidente de este deseo de extensión, las pequeñas parroquias
andorranas, en posición difícil, escaparon a la pérdida des sus libertades ancestrales,
eligiendo dos maestros en lugar de uno; Entre ellos, la persona del conde

de Foix y el obispo de Urgel. El equilibrio de las fuerzas entre los dos co-príncipes,
permitió al Consejo de los Valles, bordar en silencio un mar de libertades que
muchos envidian aún hoy en día…
Guerrero tumultuoso y político audaz, el conde Roger Bernard III de Foix no dudó
nunca en tomar las armas para que en su entorno se aceptase esa autonomía
pirenaica. Conoció sin duda, el rigor de las cárceles francesas y aragonesas por
negarse a la sumisión de los dos potentes señores feudales: Felipe de Francia y
Pedro de Aragón.
Los caminos del exilio cátaro
En este contexto, no estaremos sorprendidos en descubrir que la oratoria de los
perdicadores cátaros no se predicó en vano en estas tierras del eje pirenáico.
Al contrario, el análisis de las fuentes de información, dejaron aparecer un flujo
constante entre las dos vertientes, dando lugar, a caminos de refugio y de exílio.
Los hermanos Bretos, “buenos cristianos” de Berga, acudieron en numerosas ocasiones
al País d’Olmes y al Sabarthès, mientras que muchos otros, como Guilhem
Bélibaste cruzaron los Pirineos hacia el sur para intentar escapar a la fuerza de la
Inquisición. Su captura, cuenta ella misma las relaciones entre las dos vertientes
de la montaña: fue por un chivato infiltrado en las comunidades cátaras instaladas
en Cataluña, sorprendido más tarde y arrestado en tierras de las que el conde
de Foix poseía en los montes. Su testimonio, como aquel que declaró delante de
los jueces de la inquisición el pastor de Montaillou Pierre Maury, relata un cuadro
extraordinario de precisión de la vida de montaña a finales del siglo 13. Se
refleja como vivían sus gentes, su forma de vida intensa y compleja; cuenta el
equilibrio de las dos vertientes volcadas una hacia la otra y conscientes de su
inter-independencia.
Los siglos han transcurrido y si los archivos han envejecido, la alta cumbre de
las montañas se encuentra intacta y nos cuenta siempre esta intensa parte de la
historia. Recorriéndola y atravesándola, el viajero se convierte en peregrino de la
leyenda de los siglos.

Ariege and Catalonia in the Middle Ages
A look at Cathar times and Romanesque builders
Because it’s all behind behind us, the era we call the “middle ages” ends up disappearing
into the mists of time. However, they have deeply influenced our thinking,
countryside and relationship to the world. In climbing the Pyrenean mountain range
to greet the Spanish peaks, we consider it to be a more or less an unassailable barrier
that, since the dawn of time, has rebuffed respective inhabitants back to their

flat-lands. But our ancestors, who only had their legs and those of their mules to explore
with, were more humble and more tenacious! For the most part the mountains
formed a link point rather than a separating wall.
Following the sheep
Who knows whether it was sheep that were the first to switch from one side of these
rocky crags to the other? The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence,
even more so on the other side of the mountain. Their ovine wanderings before domestication
were made very early on in the north as well as the south. The famous
“lines and rights of way” (lies et passeries) agreements were developed which denoted
occupation of the high lands. From the 13 th century onwards these were written,
but these parchments were little more than formalising very ancient mountain
traditions. Deeply embedded in the Pyrenean spirit, these customs of land sharing
were thus enacted by local authorities. The latter were early in being freed from feudal
constraints and enjoyed a taste of comparative democracy in putting together on
their lands, systems of councils elected by the masters of the houses. Down the ages,
one “passed” swiftly across the mountains, along the animal tracks, Heretics, those
fleeing justice, and outlaws of all kinds, being often meeting them in crossing to the
other side of the mountain before disappearing discretely under foreign skies.
“Piepowders” (1) and stone cutters
Since the dawn of time, other itinerants have been crossing this vast crest of mountain
that separates the Ariège and Catalonia: traders of all types, hawkers travelling
alone or in mule convoy to cross . For the county of Foix, Cardonna salt was a musthave,
Rancié iron was plentiful from the aptly names Valferrer, Toulousain sheets
were sent in convoy by mule-train from the Berguada across the Puymorens, already
known in the 11th century as the “traders’ way”; the pass of Salua channelled its considerable
flow of pilgrims each year, and one can only hope to guess at their joy of
solitude in going through the passes of Fontargent, Bouet, Aula or Urets, all listed as
crossing points. Realising the import of cross-border trade for his county, Roger Bernard
III of Foix dispensed with the traditional Aragon drapers’ tax so that the same
privilege might be extended to the Foix drapers in Aragon. A sort of free exchange
treaty – in 1265! A simple glance at the numerous toll points elsewhere which were
kept on medieval record, clearly shows the extent of this trade: in those days rare materials,
spices, leather, precious metals, passed by the high lands to link the two giants
that were Barcelona and Toulouse.
On the trail of the “piepowders” – the funny nickname given to the travelling salesmen
of the time – master builders didn’t waste any time. You couldn’t do worse than
the evangelists who had already had the great idea to work these slopes! Roman
engineering skills extended from Foix to Berga, gathering and integrating influences
from north and south along the way. The Lombardy style scattered throughout upper
Catalonia under the influence of the very energetic bishop Oliba of Berga (by and for
the need to struggle against the Islamic influence), gives the churches of Unac and
Merens their particular bell-towers, and to many other buildings the famous Lombardy
bands which hem their apses and apsidioles. To the north the fantastic works
of Saint-Sernan in Toulouse bloomed, a master work of the second Romanesque period,
especially remarked in the sculptures. But the most manifest of Pyrenean artistic
unity can probably be shown in the murals. The masters, probably Italian into the

argain, plied the mountains from north to south leaving little traces of their genius
around the place. Combining their influences, the workshops of Pedret and Saint-
Lizier developed a singularity in exceptional work which succeeded in spanning the
centuries to be with us today…As in the north and south, the prestigious Episcopal
cities of Saint-Lizier and Seu d’Urgell draw attention to the considerable number of
excellently preserved churches in their immediate surroundings: Vic d’Oust, Sant
Serni, de Tavèrnoles, Vals, Coll de Nargo, Unac, Bescaran or Axiat all echo each other
distantly in their builders’ secret language in stone.
Mountain families on horseback
Whatever the mountain routes, this trade and communal life, shared between the
two sides could not burgeon without a minimum of political interest being shown
by the powerful who camped out at the foot of the mountains. This was true in the
south and north. In the days gone by of the Visigoth kingdom, the power had only
come from Toulouse and Barcelona, and so it was with little trouble after the Franc
interlude, the families of the nobility found their old roots again and reformed their
relationships of the feudal era. Through political expediency or though arranged
marriages, speaking the same language and looking to more or less the same goals,
these territories sprung up in numbers and found their power amid networks of alliances.
Thus the king of Aragon had numerous lands of the Comminges in Montpelier,
whilst the Count of Foix reigned supreme over a number of Catalan enclaves. Symbolic
of these expansionist desires ,the small Andorran parishes, caught between the
hammer and anvil, avoided losing their ancestral freedoms by choosing two masters
for the price of one in the persons of the count of Foix and the bishop of Urgel. The
balance of power between these two co-princes allowed the Valley Council to quietly
weave a tapestry of freedoms which is envied even today…
A turbulent warrior and bold politician, the count Roger Bernard III of Foix never hesitated
in taking arms to have this Pyrenean autonomy accepted around him. He knew
only too well the rigours of the French and Aragon jails to refuse to submit to the two
powerful overlords, Philippe of France and Pierre of Aragon.
The roads of the Cathar exile
In this context, it is not surprising to discover that the Cathar preachers’ words didn’t
stop at all on the axial peak of the Pyrenees. Quite the opposite, a study the records
reveals a constant flow between the two sides revealing the roads for refugees and
exiles. The Bretos brothers, “good Christians” of Berga, went to the Pays d’Olmes and
Sabarthès several times, whilst like many others Guilhem Bélibaste crossed the Pyrenees
to the south in a bid to escape the clutches of the Inquisition. Reports of his capture
is gleaned only from the reports around the mountain fringes: it was an informer
who had infiltrated the Cathar communities in Catalonia who identified him before
his arrest on the lands of the count of Foix over the mountains. His story, as that given
by the shepherd of Montaillou, Pierre Maury to the Inquisitorial judges, paints an extraordinarily
detailed picture of mountain life at the end of the 13 th century. It seemed
vibrant, intense, complex and shows the stability between the two sides regarding
each other, conscious of their interdependence.
Centuries have gone by and even if the records have faded, the high mountainous
lines remain and still tell the tale of their part in history. By searching and crossing
them, the traveller becomes a pilgrim in the legend of the centuries.

Basada en el respeto de un pliego de calidad, la federación nacional “Clévacances”
Francia se compromete con todos sus miembros propietarios a apostar por la
calidad. Una clasificación, en función de los diferentes niveles de exigencia de calidad,
según su importancia, dicha clasificación está repertoriada bajo el número
de llaves (de 1 a 4 llaves).
Homologada por el Ministerio de Turismo, “Clévacances” está hoy día reconocida
como uno de los líderes del mercado de alquiler temporal. Presente en casi toda
la totalidad del territorio nacional, en la metrópolis y en terriorios de otra mar.
Clévacances, propone una extensa gama de alojamientos homologados: casas,
chalets, residencias, apartamentos, estudios, centros de ocio y casas de huéspedes.
Hoy en día cuenta con alrededor de 20 000 propietarios miembros, 25 000 alquileres
y casas rurales, 3500 casas de huéspedes disponibles en la ciudad, en el
campo, en la montaña, a orillas del mar… a cada uno su… Clévacances !
Las casas de huéspedes que encontrarán en esta guía han obtenido todas, el distintivo
de la calificación medio-ambiental, sus principales objetivos son, proteger
el medio ambiente y responder a las expectativas de una clientela sensible a los
principios de la eco-ciudadanía y de ecología.
Son propietarios de alojamientos turísticos, comprometidos en materia de un
desarrollo sostenible.
La red mundial de acogida turística, “Gîtes de France”, es una marca conocida y reconocida
por 2 milliones de turistas que buscan la calidad y la garantía del alojamiento,
responden a normas y criterios de comodidad gracias a una clasificación
en espigas (de 1 a 5 espigas).
“Gîtes de France” tiene el objetivo de favorecer las estancias auténticas con las
mejores condiciones de acogida y comodidad, respondiendo a las necesidades

today survives and is a graded Historic Monument
with a few sections of the surrounding wall remaining.

feudales al Conde de Foix. El Castillo está clasificado

The estate of Pailhès goes back originally to the
Counts of Toulouse. In 1230, Raymond VII granted the
rights of sovereignty to the Count of Foix. The castle

built up by the Benedictines in 1303. The Saintiago de
Compostella road comes in from Fanjeaux and Mas
d’Azil is a stopping point before it carries on to Lescure.

A staunch Hugenot bastion, the citadel was the high
ground in the religious wars in Foix county. Besieged

Clasificada Monumento Histórico, perteneció hacia el
año 1000 a los monjes de Lézat, más tarde reconstruida
al estilo románico a principios del siglo XVI, las
guerras de religión contribuyeron a los saqueos. La

Graded as an Historic Monument, around 1,000 AD
it belonged to the monks of Lézat then, rebuilt in
Romanesque style at the beginning of the 16 th century,

Esta Iglesia primitiva e iglesia parroquial, sirvió de
lugar de culto, durante casi dos siglos.
Destruida durante las Guerras de religión , el edificio
fue reconstruido mínimamente a finales del siglo
XVII y a principios del XVIII.

La capilla románica de Saint-Sernin de Bensa era la
iglesia del pueblo de Bensa, barrio pintoresco de Lavelanet.
La iglesia de Notre Dame de la Assomption
fue construida en el siglo XII, más tarde destruida,
para reconstruirse de nuevo en el siglo XVII.
The Romanesque chapel of Saint-Sernin of Bensa
was the church for the village of Bensa, the picturesque
suburbs of Lavelanet. The church of Our Lady
of the Assumption was built in the 12 th century, then
destroyed only to be rebuilt in the 17 th century.

Es el lugar cátaro más repleto de historia.Ubicado

Esclarmonde, hija de Raymond de Péreille. Descubrirán

Perched at the top of an impressive cliff, the fortress of

De los vestigios del castillo se conservan un muro
imponente y algunas construcciones. Visitar igualmente:
las cascadas de treinta metros de altura. Se
accede por un sendero agradable con salida desde
la Iglesia del Carol.

been completely razed. Its foundation stones can still
be seen on the domed rock that supported it.

calcite spur. In the middle of the 13 th century Arnaud

Castillo de los antiguos señores de So y de Allion, es
un sitio que controlaba el valle de Aude y protegía
la zona del Donezan de cualquier incursión. Hoy
en día, este sitio alberga en su recinto la Casa del

El castillo de Querigut aparece por primera vez en la
documentación histórica en 1208 cuando se hace,
con el de Querigut y toda la tierra del Donezan, un
feudo del Condado de Foix. Hoy sólo queda una
torre.
Quérigut castle appears for the first time in the historical
record in 1208, when it became, with that of Usson
and whole earth of the Donezan, a fief of the Foix
county. Now, it only remains a whole castral tower.

Note the old bridge in the village. This bridge, from the
14 th century, crosses the Llobregat. The old part of the
village preserves interesting medieval elements.

Sitio etapa del Camino de los Hombres Buenos,
el pueblo actual de Gósol se constituyó al pie del
antiguo castillo, del cual queda por visitar lienzos
de paredes, la iglesia y el campanario. Ahí también
descubrirá una pequeña sala dedicada a Picasso.
Site step in the path of “Chemin des Bonshommes”,
the present village of Gósol is formed at the foot of
the old Castle, which it remains to visit parts of walls,
the Church and the Bell Tower. You will also discover a
small room dedicated to Picasso.

Este puente de la época románica, situado en el río
Llobregat, fue construido en el siglo XI. De piedra,
se admira también por su arco medio punto.
This bridge, from the Romanesque era, located on the
Llobregat River, was built in the 11 th century. In stone,
it is also remarkable for its Roman arch.

En Cercs, encontrará un puente de estilo gótico,
de piedra, que atraviesa el río Llobregat. De perfil
triangular, tiene una anchura de 60 metros. Está
constituido por 4 arcos: 3 medio punto y un ojival.
In Cercs, you will find a gothic stone bridge, which
crosses the river Llobregat. Triangular profile, the
bridge is 60 meters wide. It is formed by 4 arcs: three
Roman arches and an ogival.

en tres imponentes pillares. Es de 63 metros de
longitud.
