PROYECTO ESPECIAL CHAVIMOCHIC
CHAVIMOCHIC SPECIAL PROJECT
río Santa para el riego de 144 mil has en los valles de Chao, Virù, Moche y Chicama;
PROYECTO ESPECIAL CHAVIMOCHIC
LA LIBERTAD
¡Agroindustria que crece
en la Costa Norte del Perú!
¡ Agribusiness that grows on
the northern coast of Peru!
Presentation
The CHAVIMOCHIC irrigation is the most important work of development in the region of La
Libertad. Its construction was started during the 1985–1990 Government and continued being
developed with outstanding hydraulic works for the transfer and distribution of the waters from
the Santa River for the irrigation of 144 thousand hectares in the valleys of Chao, Viru, Moche
and Chicama as well as the processing of drinking water for more than 70% of the city of
Trujillo, benefiting at the same time to more Peruvians with rural electricity service.
After the development of Stages I and II, including the Floodgate at Chao-Viru-Moche, it has
brought out new growth and development of the La Libertad Region. The agroindustrial
production of its valleys has placed Peru as one of the leading producer of asparagus in the
world, thus generating thousands of jobs for the region as the best place to carry out
productive transactions, in various agricultural related industries
CHAVIMOCHIC has demonstrated to contain an efficient use of more than 3 thousand 800
3
million m of water distributed in the valleys during the decade 1990-2010, and has made
more than 40 thousand hectares of productive land; it has sold more than 50 thousand
hectares to the private sector, whose soils have produced food (1990-2011) for amounting to
more than 2,700 million dollars, confirming that this project constitutes one of the most
profitable and productive irrigations project of Peru.
It has also legalized the ownership of 11,200 hectares of the old valleys of Chao, Viru and
Moche; 70 thousand inhabitants of the provinces of Viru and Santa (Ancash) have received
electricity generated by its Central Plant in San Jose. Also, the treating plant for drinking water
in Trujillo, one of the most modern plants of the country, meets the basic needs of more than
700 thousand inhabitants of Trujillo and its districts.
With investments from the Central Government, Regional Government and the Special
Project CHAVIMOCHIC, works have been built to consolidate its development under the
frame of Stage III - Phase I, which includes the Dam Palo Redondo, guaranteeing growth for
the country.
