have adapted to the constant high levels of humidity. It is here that the water produced
by the forests builds up enough force to become small streams, eventually turning into
larger rivers that thunder down the mountainsides, bringing with them the sediment that
fertilizes the Amazonian plain.
Land of mountains
The national park is located on a karst massif that consists of a series of limestone relieves
in the shape of an arch, whose convex section faces the city of Tingo Maria. The resulting
PNA is characterized by its steep, rugged slopes and narrow valleys in the upper reaches,
such as what we find in the Upper Huallaga River Valley. Since these mountains have been
well protected, they shelter remnants of the upper jungle primary forest, where a peculiar
biological diversity thrives, especially the little know plant species growing in the hollows
and caverns.
These are some of the reasons why one of Tingo Maria’s strong points is its ability to
cling to its natural treasures, in spite of human intervention. If we were to act intelligently,
supported by scientific research, and conserve the environmental processes, we can
increase the value of this beautiful region and preserve the priceless ecosystem services
it provides for the generations to come.
