TELL #33
TITLE: Watch me make a fist.
CATEGORY: Strong Means Weak.
DESCRIPTION: Many novice players, and some intermediate players, try to fool the
opposition by gesturing to rap pat before it's their turn. You can see the player second from right
performing this act. There is no penalty for changing his mind, because general poker rules
dictate that "acting out of turn is not binding."
MOTIVATION: He hopes the opener will be mislead.
RELIABILITY:
• Weak players = 88%
• Average players = 68%
• Strong players = 56%
VALUE PER HOUR:
• $1 limit = $0.18
• $101imit = $1.10
• $100 limit = $9.50
DISCUSSION: Even if you can interpret this tell correctly, it seldom does you much good in
high-hand-wins draw poker. True, the opponent is trying to mislead you by pretending to rap
pat, but his motive is fairly hazy. He wants to fool you, but
in his heart he doesn't quite know why. You can be fairly certain that he'll draw cards, but what
can you do about it? In lowball, the tell is more beneficial.
BEST STRATEGY: If an opponent is pretending to rap pat behind you and your jacks-orbetter-to-open
hand is ...
A♦ A♣ 7♣ 8♣ 2♣
...you should definitely draw three to the aces and not be tricked into splitting openers and
trying for the flush. If the game is lowball, there's a much greater chance that you can earn a
profit here. If you have a hand such as 9-7-6-4-2 and were tempted to draw one, you should now
rap pat, knowing that your lowball opponent will be drawing cards.
Photo 71:
It's draw poker. The opener (second from left) is drawing a card,
while an opponent seems to be rapping pat.
