There were five of us visiting the lovely island of Vieques lastNovember. Word came to us from a guardian angel at one ofthe local restaurants that some dogs needed to be transportedfrom Puerto Rico to the Boston area. We were traveling homeon Saturday and all agreed this was a great way to help out andsupport the Vieques community! We called the Vieques Humane Society, telling them of our enthusiasm. We were then contacted by delightful woman named Sandy from the HumaneSociety on the big island. We coordinated a time to meet in the SanJuan airport before our flight home. There, on Saturday afternoon, at the airport, were 7 crates and 15 dogs!!!The dogs from Vieques had ridden over on the ferry that morning along withtheir dedicated volunteers from our local Humane Society. Others werefrom a shelter in Puerto Rico that Sandy is affiliated with. One crate held amama dog that had been found at the Mall in a box with her puppies! Theywere all adorable and we were able to take them out of the crates and givethem some pre-travel love!Sandy waited in line with me to check in for the flight. She talked to theagent and presented all the paperwork. I just stood there and smiled! The7 crates would be “attached” to my ticket for their journey to Boston. Thecrates were then moved to the loading area and the girls and I proceededto the gate. When we arrived in Boston, we went to the baggage claim area and therewere the crates! Someone from a shelter in Gloucester, Massachusettswould be picking them up.I found out from Sandy that the cost of “shipping” a crate on AmericanAirlines was $150.00. That day the Humane Society paid $1,050.00 togive these dogs a new life! She told me their biggest issue was not onlythe money, but people willing to add the crates to their tickets to transportthese dogs to their new homes!!IT WAS SOOOO EASY!! I would urge anyone traveling to Boston, to givethe Humane Society a call to see if they can facilitate the rescue of thesewonderful dogs. It is such a small thing for a traveler but a lifetime of happinessto the dog!34
Connectionsreal estateREALTORA simple, well maintained house in desirableEsperanza neighborhood. This 2 bedroom, 1bath home is set back in a quiet area of town, yet within walking distance of all the attractionson the Malecon. There is a detached screenedpavilion for dining and relaxing, a laundry andstorage area below, and a concrete carport. There is a lot of potential here. There is already a peak of the Caribbean from thefront, but a roof deck or second floor would provide an even better sweepingvista. $320,000.00marzo vieques eventsoffice: 787.741.0023 • fax: 787.741.2022Paul C.
