General Principles and Requirementsapplicable to Researchers:Research FreedomResearchers should focus their research for the good of mankind and forexpanding the frontiers of scientific knowledge, while enjoying the freedomof thought and expression, and the freedom to identify methods bywhich problems are solved, according to recognised ethical principles andpractices.Researchers should, however, recognise the limitations to this freedomthat could arise as a result of particular research circumstances (includingsupervision/guidance/management) or operational constraints, e.g. forbudgetary or infrastructural reasons or, especially in the industrial sector,for reasons of intellectual property protection. Such limitations shouldnot, however, contravene recognised ethical principles and practices, towhich researchers have to adhere.Ethical principlesResearchers should adhere to the recognised ethical practices and fundamentalethical principles appropriate to their discipline(s) as well as toethical standards as documented in the different national, sectoral or institutionalCodes of Ethics.Professional responsibilityResearchers should make every effort to ensure that their research is relevantto society and does not duplicate research previously carried outelsewhere.45
