Mediante esta breve nota, quiero ponerles al corriente de algunas de lasmuchas cosas buenas que los Padres Escolapios de Estados Unidos y Puerto Rico han llevado y estánllevando a cabo gracias a la generosidad de los amigos de la Parroquia y Escuela de Nuestra Señora delCarmen.El objetivo de la “Campaña Anual de Apoyo Vocacional y Formación” es proveer asistencia yayuda para la formación y educación de nuestros seminaristas que en su día se integrarán al ministerioactivo de la tarea “Escolapia”. Como Vds. ya saben, nuestra Misión es seguir a Cristo y servir a laIglesia en nuestro “aquí” y en nuestro “ahora” mediante la promoción de una vida auténticamentecristiana educando eficazmente a niños y juventud, preferencialmente a los pobres. Este año tenemosveintisiete seminaristas. (El costo medio anual de la educación y formación de un seminarista es $13,500.00). Una vez que hayan terminado sus estudios y sean ordenados sacerdotes, trabajarán en una de lasnueve escuelas, colegios o parroquias de nuestra Provincia:Coto Laurel (Ponce), PR: Colegio PonceñoDevon, PA: Devon Preparatory SchoolFort Lauderdale, FL: Cardinal Gibbons High SchoolMartin, KY: The Piarist SchoolMiami, FL: Instituto Pastoral del Sur-Este (SEPI)New York City, NY: Parroquia y Escuela de la AnunciaciónPlaya de Ponce, PR: Parroquia y Escuela de Nuestra Señora del CarmenRio Piedras (San Juan), PR: Colegio Calasanz y Parroquia del Santisimo SalvadorWashington, DC: Universidad Católica de AméricaAhora mismo tenemos veintisiete hombres en distintos grados de formación. Siete son pre-noviciosen su formación inicial, cuatro pre-novicios que están estudiando filosofía, y otro pre-novicio enactividades pastorales; hay dos novicios; hay un junior profeso en actividades pastorales, nueve junioresprofesos que están haciendo su filosofía, y tres juniores profesos en teología.Es motivo de alegre esperanza comunicarles que en el mes de noviembre tuvimos un retiro vocacionalen nuestra casa del SEPI. Cuarenta jóvenes asistieron. Al finalizar el retiro, como la mitad de ellosexpresaron un profundo interés en conocer más a fondo el carisma de la “vocación escolapia”. Esta granbendición se debe en su mayor parte a la generosidad de nuestros amigos, bienhechores, y colaboradores.Siendo así nuestra situación presente vocacional, es difícil creer que hace tan sólo trece años noteníamos ni un solo seminarista en nuestro programa de formación. Con el favor de Dios, con un enormeesfuerzo del equipo vocacional y formativo, con la financiación de ciertas identidades, y con la ayudaeconómica de amigos, bienhechores y colaboradores, hemos visto prosperar nuestro programa vocacional.El resultado tan halagüeño de nuestro programa vocacional nos da la firme convicción de que nuestra“Misión Escolapia” en Estados Unidos y Puerto Rico tiene asegurado su futuro.

This is just a short letter to update youon some of the wonderful things, which the Piarist Fathers have been able to accomplish, thanksto the generosity of the friends of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish and School in Playa dePonce.The purpose of our annual Vocation and Formation Appeal is to provide assistance for theformation and education of our seminarians, who will then go on to active ministry and help usto fulfill our mission. As you may already know, our mission is to follow Christ and to serve theChurch in the modern world by promoting our unique way of life and administering effectivelyto the educational needs of children and youth, especially the poor. We currently have twentysevenseminarians. They include: seven prenovicesin initial studies, four pre-novices in philosophy, one pre-novice in pastoral activities,two novices, one professed junior in pastoral activities, nine professed juniors in philosophy andthree professed juniors in theology.We are excited to also report to you that, in November, we held a vocations retreat at ourhouse in Miami. Forty men attended and, afterwards, about half of them expressed a continuedinterest in a Piarist vocation. This blessing is, in large part, made possible due to the generosityof our many benefactors.It is hard to fathom that, only thirteen years ago, we had no men in our formation program.Through prayer, strenuous efforts on the part of our vocations and formation personnel, financialgrants, and the financial assistance of our benefactors, we have seen the Piarists’ vocation effortsprosper. The success of our vocation efforts ensures that our mission in the United States andPuerto Rico will continue for many years to come.
