GRADEBOOK: AUTOMATED EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS
A message from Miami-Dade Schools' Information Technology Services:
The District Electronic Gradebook provides automated email notifications to
parents and students who subscribe for this service. Parents and students who
wish to start receiving automated email subscriptions can do so via the Electronic
Gradebook link in the parent or student portals. Registration instructions,
demonstration videos as well as a description of all notifications can be found on
the PIV resources page at:

TESTING: PSAT
An important message from Laz Hernandez, CGHS Testing, Technology and AP
Coordinator:

PSAT Testing
The PSAT will be administered on Wednesday, October 17, 2012. The PSAT is a
short version (2 hours, 10 minutes) of the College Board's SAT test, which many
colleges require for admission. Studies conducted in hundreds of colleges
throughout the country have shown that abilities measured on this test are
important in predicting academic success in college
The PSAT lets students assess their skills in critical reading, mathematical
reasoning, and writing; get specific suggestions on how to improve their skills;
compare their academic skills with those of other college-bound students; practice
for the SAT Reasoning Test; enter scholarship competitions (i.e.: NMSQT); ask
colleges to send them information; and get information about a college major of
their interest.
When the results are returned to students in mid-December, they will also receive
an "Item Analysis" report. This report contains a listing of their answer, the correct
answer, and an explanation of "why" for each question. They will also receive their
test booklet, which will enable them to analyze their results and determine areas of
strengths and weaknesses.
Some scholarship sponsors make use of the PSAT scores when considering
applicants for awards. Students must take this test during their Junior year in order
to enter competitions for National Merit Scholarship Corporation awards.
SOPHOMORES DO NOT NEED TO REGISTER.
FRESHMEN & JUNIOR REGITRATIONS:
To register, please ask your English teacher for a PSAT Registration
Form. Return this form and $14.00 (cash only) to Mr. Ravelo in the Main Office
(room 110) before school or during lunch. Juniors on free or reduced lunch may
receive a fee waiver. These are offered on a first come first served basis. Please
inform Mr. Ravelo that you qualify. A limited number of seats are available, so
please sign up early.
Registration will end on Friday September 28th.

at CORAL GABLES HIGH SCHOOL!

LINK COMPUTER LITERACY PROGRAM
Students in 9th grade who are enrolled in the Free and Reduced Price Lunch
Program may be able to receive a computer at a cost of $25 through LINK, a
federally funded grant program. Parents must apply to the LINK program online
through the Parent Portal at www.dadeschools.net/parents. The LINK application
deadline is September 21, 2012. If you don't already have a Parent Portal
account, please visit the school to receive your PIN and register. Students will be
selected to participate in the LINK program (click here for brochure) through a
random lottery. If you have questions, please visit the LINK program's website at

CONGRATULATIONS!
On September 7th 2012, Josh Kirstein, a Senior In Mr. Van Dyk's Computer
Science class, competed in a FIU programming contest that was for FIU
University students and achieved the best score in the competition. He could not
officially win since he is still a high school student but he did beat all the other
contestants, which is a pretty impressive feat for a high school student.
Congrats Josh and GO CAVS!

Where: At the student parking lot by the New Building (Riviera side)
What YOU get: Community service hours, free food, an awesome shirt, and the
pride of knowing you've done something great!
Requirements: Must be 17 years old. You must weigh over 100 lbs. Bring your ID
with you. If it is your 1st time donating, have your parent(s) sign a consent form.

Gables' new CAP advisor, Liz Stack, has been working very hard to prepare our
students for the next step: college! The CAP Office has a new Facebook page:

EXAMEN PSAT

Estudiantiles:
Examen PSAT
El PSAT será impartido el miércoles, 17 de octubre de 2012. El PSAT es una
versión corta (2 horas, 10 minutos) del examen SAT del College Board, necesario
para el ingreso a muchas universidades. Estudios investigativos realizados en
diferentes universidades del país muestran que las habilidades medidas en éste
examen son importantes en predecir el éxito académico universitario.
El PSAT permite que estudiantes evaluen sus destrezas en lectura comprensiva,
razonamiento matemático y escritura; ofrece sugerencias específicas de como
mejorar las destrezas; compara las habilidades académicas con las de otros
estudiantes pre-universitarios; ofrece ejercicios de práctica para el examen de
razonamiento de SAT; ofrece concursos para becas, por ejemplo, el NMSQT;

facilita que los estudiantes soliciten información a las universidades y colleges; y
obtengan información sobre alguna carrera o curso que les interese.

CONFERENCIA ANUAL DE LIDERAZGO Y FERIA
el sábado 22 de septiembre, 2012 de 8:00AM a 3:00PM
en CORAL GABLES HIGH SCHOOL!
Tenemos el honor de que ésta Conferencia tomará lugar en Gables High!
Este evento es para todos los miembros de la comunidad escolar, líderes
de PTA, Directores, Estudiantes y Maestros. Aprenda a colaborar para
administrar un PTA eficaz.
Desayuno y Almuerzo serán proporcionados, cuidado de niños se ofrecerá para
los primeros 25 niños inscritos. Este evento cumple con el requisito de
entrenamiento para Premios de las Unidades Locales Acreditadas. Todos las
personas que asistan y estén pre-inscritas estarán elegibles para una rifa especial
de dos tarjetas de regalo de $25.00!

PROGRAMA DE ENLACE "LINK" DE CONOCIMIENTOS INFORMATIVOS
Estudiantes en grado 9 inscritos en el Programa de Alimentos Gratis y Reducidos
de las Escuelas Públicas del Condado de Miami-Dade posiblemente podrán
recibir una computadora por el costo de $25 a través de LINK, un programa de
becas con fondos federales. Padres deben aplicar al programa LINK en línea por
medio del Portal para Padres en www.dadeschools.net/parents. La fecha límite
para someter la aplicación LINK es el 21 de septiembre de 2012. Si aún no tiene
una cuenta con el Portal para Padres, por favor visite la escuela para recibir su
PIN e inscribirse. Estudiantes serán seleccionados para participar en el programa

FELICITACIONES!
El 7 de septiembre de 2012, Josh Kirstein, un Senior en la clase de Ciencia
Informática de Mr. Van Dyk, compitió en una competencia de programación en
FIU que era para estudiantes universitarios de FIU y recibió el mejor puntaje de
la competencia. Oficialmente no pudo ganar ya que aún es un estudiante de
escuela secundaria, pero venció a todos los otros concursantes, lo cual es una
hazaña muy digna de admiración para un estudiante de escuela secundaria.

Los Seniors deben ir a los estudios Fox-Mar para tomar sus fotos. Los seniors
no serán fotografiados en la escuela. Los Seniors que no tomaron su foto antes
de 1 de septiembre recibirán su tarjeta de identificación con la foto escolar del año

Bono de $1.2 Billones Irá A Referendum
La importancia de que pase el referendum de bono que estará para votación
durante las elecciones generales éste noviembre es primordial. Estudiantes
que tendrán 18 años antes de las elecciones generales se les anima a inscribirse
y votar.
