Marroquín Castle
100 years, “a thousand” faces.
Standing in front of this medieval building generates a feeling that is out.of this
world. Or at least out of this continent. It is a building built from plans drawn
from Europe at the end of the 19th century, which has been - among many others
- presidential house, place of creepy stories of fright, psychiatric hospital,
cabaret, convention center, restaurant, exotic place of Rumba, maa hatchery
and even stage of legendary concerts in Colombia. The architectural work,
forged in carved stone, with battlements and turrets, garita, palenque, aljibe,
narrow corridors and basements, has just been opened to the public.
Castillo de Marroquín
100 años, ’mil’ caras.
Pararse frente a esta construcción medieval genera una sensación
que no es de este mundo. O al menos, no de este continente.
Se trata de una edicación levantada a partir de planos venidos
de Europa a nales del siglo XIX que ha sido –entre muchos
otros- casa presidencial, lugar de escalofriantes historias de
espantos, hospital psiquiátrico, cabaret, centro de convenciones,
restaurante, exótico
lugar de rumba,
criadero de caballos
de la maa y hasta
escenario de legendarios
conciertos venidos a
Colombia.
La obra arquitectónica,
forjada en piedra
labrada, con almenas
y torreones, garita,
palenque, aljibe,
estrechos pasillos
y sótanos, acaba
de ser abierta al público.
Indigenous Reservation
In the skin of a muisca.
Being part of an sacred ritual Muisca, to see darken and dawn in the middle of
dance and indigenous music or to cross the ancestral territory of the hand of
gods and to the rate of fantastic narrations are experiences that probably no
museum of the world can offer. But the indigenous reservation of Chia, ofcially
recognized by the National Government, yes. It is a tourist plan structured by the
indigenous people belonging to the shelter that-without exaggerating- make the
visitor an Indian for a day, or for a night. Included in the experience is, for
example, the consumption of chicha and hosca, which is the medicine of the
Muisca people with tobacco and the presentation of tchunzua, the sacred
meeting place of the community.

Participar de un ritual sagrado muisca, ver oscurecer y amanecer en medio de
danza y música indígena o recorrer el territorio ancestral de la mano de dioses
y al ritmo de narraciones fantásticas son experiencias que probablemente ningún
museo del mundo pueda ofrecer. Pero el resguardo indígena de Chía, reconocido
ocialmente por el Gobierno Nacional, sí. Se trata de un plan turístico
estructurado por los propios indígenas pertenecientes al resguardo que sin exagerar
convierten al visitante en indígena
por un día, o por una noche.

del pueblo muisca
a base de tabaco
y la presentación

Bear Mountain
Bear Mountain, a factory of life
Although it is one of the best views of the Sabana in Bogota - without
separating the feet from the oor you can see from Usme to Cogua -, Bear
Mountain seduces by many more things. The rst thing is that it is a water
factory, surrounded by forests of fog and sub-mud that functions as an
ecological tourist attraction more than a decade ago. An amazing
place to listen to the voices that speak in the middle of silence,
to feel the caresses of Mother Nature and perhaps to look from
the inside. You can do camping and climbing. There are ravines
and more than ten species of frailejones. You can arrive to the
Mountain from Bogota by driving the North Freeway in the
kilometer 22, turn by the Marroquín Castle, by the entrance
to Altos de Yerbabuena.
Montaña del Oso
La Montaña del Oso, una 'factoría' de vida
Aunque se trata de una de las mejores vistas de la Sabana
de Bogotá –sin separar los pies del piso se puede ver desde
Usme hasta Cogua-, la Montaña del Oso seduce por
muchas más cosas.
Lo primero es que se trata de una factoría de agua, cercada
por bosques de niebla y subpáramo que funciona
como atractivo turístico ecológico hace más de una
década. Un lugar alucinante para
escuchar las voces que hablan
en medio del silencio, para palpar
las caricias de la madre Naturaleza
y quizá para mirarse desde adentro.
Se puede hacer camping y escalada.
Hay quebradas y más de diez especies
de frailejones. A la Montaña se llega desde
Bogotá por la Autopista Norte en el kilómetro 22,
girando por el Castillo Marroquín, por la entrada a Altos
de Yerbabuena.
Caro and Cuervo
Institute
The garden of the intellect
The colorful and beautiful gardens are not the only thing that is
grown prodigiously in the country house of the Institute Caro and
Cuervo. Also there germinates the scientic investigation in
philosophy, linguistics, literature, humanities and Colombian
history. A large space that is worth knowing in Hacienda
Yerbabuena, that was property of the ex- president and philologist
Jose Manuel Marroquín and that will be turned into a botanical
garden. The plan there is to visit the Institute through its building, its
history, its museums and the work of the printing press.
Instituto Caro y Cuervo
El jardín del intelecto
Los coloridos y hermosos jardínes no son lo único que se cultiva
prodigiosamente en la sede campestre del Instituto Caro y Cuervo.
También germina allí la investigación cientíca en losofía, lingüística,
literatura, humanidades e historia colombiana. Un amplio espacio que
bien vale la pena conocer en la Hacienda Yerbabuena, que fue
propiedad del ex presidente y lólogo José Manuel Marroquín y que
será convertido en un jardín botánico. El plan allí es recorrer el Instituto
a través de su edicación, su historia, sus museos y el trabajo de la
imprenta.

pandeyucas ha sido, por décadas, el plan dominical no solo de cientos de
familias de Bogotá y municipios vecinos, sino de extranjeros que llegan
atraídos por estas preparaciones de harina de yuca y queso que no se
consiguen en otras latitudes. Se trata de todo un plan en torno a estas
verdaderas delicias preparadas en horno de leña y cuyas recetas han sido
celosamente guardadas por más de 50 años.
Craft workshops
Handmade Marvels
Although kept more or less hidden, the artisan workshops of Chia suppose a
world magical and silent. There are more than 200 craftsmen sheltered in about
50 workshops throughout the Municipality, working intensely for national
clients, but also international. The plan is something like visiting a random shop
and feeling marvelous at xed. There are glasswork, macramé, ceramics,
fabrics, creations with wood and leather and even handicrafts from recycled
material.

Train station
The Locomotive, the past that got entangled in the present.
The force of the boiling steam moves the pistons and these push the wheels of a
machine that still moves through the Savannah of Bogota - and that passes
through Chia - based of coal combustion and nostalgia. An early nineteenthcentury
transport device that moved the world to the mid-twenties and perhaps
produces one of the most romantic sounds in the world. The idea is not just to get
on one of the 14 cars and become one of the 560 passengers of that locomotive -
known as the Tren de la Sabana - but also enjoy the Station, located in La Caro
that is declared as Cultural Heritage of the nation.
Marketplace
The market of the senses
Dive into the hundreds of colors, smells and avors of a real market
place is a privilege when that paradise of fruits, vegetables and
meats has true and strict standards of health and hygiene. Well,
that's Chia's Market square. A place to buy healthy food and maybe
haggle a bit. A sample of the culture of the municipality, its people
and, without a doubt, its gastronomy.

Zambullirse entre los cientos de colores, olores y sabores de una
auténtica plaza de mercado es todo un privilegio cuando ese
paraíso de las frutas, las verduras y las carnes cuenta con
verdaderas y estrictas normas de salubridad e higiene. Pues así es la
Plaza de Mercado de Chía. Un lugar para comprar comida sana y
quizá regatear un poco. Una muestra de la cultura del Municipio, de
sus gentes y, sin duda, de su gastronomía.
Talleres de artesanías
Maravillas hechas a mano.
Aunque se mantengan más o menos ocultos, los talleres artesanales de Chía
suponen un mundo mágico y silencioso. Son más de 200 artesanos
resguardados en unos 50 talleres por todo el Municipio, trabajando
intensamente para clientes nacionales, pero también internacionales. El plan es
algo así como visitar un taller al azar y sentirse maravillado a la ja. Hay
vidrieria, macramé, cerámica, tejidos, creaciones con madera y cuero e, incluso,
artesanías a partir de material reciclado.

La Locomotora, el pasado que se enredó en el presente.
La fuerza del vapor en ebullición mueve los pistones y estos impulsan las ruedas
de una máquina que aún se mueve por la Sabana de Bogotá –y que pasa por
Chía- a base de combustión de carbón y nostalgia. Un aparato de transporte de
principios del siglo XIX que movió al mundo hasta mediados del XX y que
produce, quizá, uno de los sonidos más románticos del mundo. La idea no es
solo subirse a alguno de los 14 coches y convertirse en uno de los 560 pasajeros
de esa locomotora –conocida como el Tren de la Sabana- sino, además,
deleitarse con la Estación, ubicada en La Caro y declarada Patrimonio Cultural
de la Nación.

In recent years, more than ever in the history of the Municipality, cycling is
one of the activities that attracts more tourists to Chia. The different levels
of difculty of the routes, safety and landscapes have made the city of the
Moon a place for wild cycling lovers.

ciclismo agreste.
Gastronomic Festival
The art of true country food
Santander Park, in the heart of Chía, is the scenario chosen to gather the
best country food in the center of the country. At the end of the year, at
least fty of the best chefs and restaurants in the Savannah of Bogotá and
about 10,000 people meet for two days to succumb to true gastronomic
pleasures. The event is already considered a tourist icon of the
Municipality.

El arte de la verdadera comida campestre
El Parque Santander, en pleno centro urbano de Chía, es el escenario
elegido para reunir la mejor comida campestre del centro del país. A nales
de año, al menos medio centenar de los mejores chefs y restaurantes de la
Sabana de Bogotá y unas 10 mil personas se dan cita durante dos días para
sucumbir ante verdaderos placeres gastronómicos. El evento es
considerado ya un ícono turístico del Municipio.
Puente del Común
A colonial treasure by the side of the road.
Still, despite the highway passing by, the Puente del Común - at the entrance to
Chia - is one of the most important engineering works during the time of the
Colony, at the end of the 18th century. In fact, it was nothing more or nothing
less than the civil work that allowed communication between the north and
northeast of the region, separated by the Rio Funza (Bogotá). In the year of
1951 the Bridge was restored and in 1967 it was declared National Monument.
Puente del Común
Un tesoro colonial a la vera del camino
El Puente del Común, a la entrada de Chía, se impone como una de las obras
de ingeniería más trascendentales durante la época de la Colonia, a nales del
siglo XVIII. En efecto, no era nada más ni nada menos que la obra civil que
permitía la comunicación entre el norte y el nordeste de la región, separados
por el río Funza (Bogotá). En el año de 1951 el Puente fue restaurado y en 1967
fue declarado Monumento Nacional.
Historical Center
A beating heart.
Walking through the historical center of Chia, by any of its eight portals or by its
pedestrian spaces, is sure to take the pulse of a city erected from the Chibcha
culture. A marked contrast between the indigenous roots and all the modernity
with their bars, banks, restaurants, terraces and coffee shops. In the center of
the Main Park, the Santander, you can nd the monument to the Moon Goddess
and the Church of Santa Lucía.

Caminar por el centro histórico de Chía, por
cualquiera de sus ocho portales o por sus espacios
peatonales supone, seguramente, tomarle el pulso a
una ciudad erguida desde la cultura Chibcha.
Un marcado contraste entre las raices indígenas
y toda la modernidad que suponen sus bares,
entidades bancarias, restaurantes ,
terrazas y cafeterias.
En el centro del Parque Principal, el Santander,
se encuentra el monumento a la Diosa Luna
y la Iglesia de Santa Lucía.
La Valvanera
The Sanctuary that 'protects' a whole town
In the west of the Municipality, since 1937, stands the shrine of Our Lady of La
Valvanera, a true icon of religious tourism whose main protagonism is lived
during the holy week pilgrimages. It is also one of the strategic places that allow
a wonderful view of Chia and even part of Bogota. To get there you can access
by natural roads or by the route that leads to Tabio and Tenjo.

Al occidente del Municipio, y erguido desde 1937, se levanta el santuario de
Nuestra señora de La Valvanera, un verdadero ícono de turismo religioso cuyo
mayor protagonismo se vive durante las peregrinaciones de Semana Santa y
Navidad. Es, además, uno de los lugares estratégicos que permiten una
maravillosa panorámica de Chía e incluso de parte de Bogotá. Hasta allá se
accede por caminos naturales o por la vía que conduce a Tabio y Tenjo.
