Fundación Chol Chol
La Fundación Chol-Chol es una organización no gubernamental,
sin fines de lucro, que promueve el comercio justo de fina
artesanía y textilería mapuche, gracias a un trabajo de
posicionamiento sistemático de empoderamiento a través de la
promoción cultural.
En la Fundación Chol-Chol, creemos que el Comercio Justo
proporciona oportunidades reales de desarrollo económico,
tanto para la preservación de técnicas ancestrales mapuche
como para pertinencia cultural, porque no busca tener lucro
económico, sino más bien, la dignificación de las personas,
especialmente de pequeños productores que han sido
marginados del sistema comercial convencional.
El comercio justo invita a generar paz y desarrollo. Como
consumidores, tenemos el poder para contribuir a reducir la
pobreza y proteger el medioambiente. Podemos hacerlo al
apoyar el movimiento de Comercio Equitativo y, de esa forma,
promover un real desarrollo para los pequeños productores.
Hoy, el movimiento está creciendo muy rápido en todo el
mundo, ¿por qué no usar nuestras facultades para promoverlo?

The Chol-Chol Foundation is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that promotes fair trade
of fine Mapuche handicrafts and textiles, thanks to a systematic positioning work of empowerment
through cultural promotion.
At the Chol-Chol Foundation, we believe that Fair Trade provides real opportunities for economic
development, both for the preservation of Mapuche ancestral techniques and for cultural relevance,
because it does not seek economic gain, but rather, the dignification of people, especially of small
producers that have been marginalized from the conventional commercial system.
Fair trade invites to generate peace and development. As consumers, we have the power to
help reduce poverty and protect the environment. We can do this by supporting the Fair Trade
movement and, in that way, promote real development for small producers. Today, the movement is
growing very fast all over the world, why not use our faculties to promote it? Together we can build
a more peaceful and equitable world.
La Fondation Chol-Chol est une organisation à but non lucratif et non gouvernementale qui promeut
le commerce équitable des produits artisanaux et textiles mapuches de qualité, grâce à un travail de
positionnement systématique de l’autonomisation à travers la promotion culturelle.
A la Fondation Chol-Chol, nous pensons que le commerce équitable peut apporter de réelles
opportunitées de développement économique, tant pour la préservation des techniques Mapuche

Fundación Chol Chol, como organización y
miembro garantizado de la Organización Mundial
de Comercio Justo (WFTO, por sus siglas en inglés),
busca generar mejores oportunidades para el
desarrollo y la conciencia de la cultura, la historia y el
patrimonio regional y nacional.
Los artesanos que trabajan con la Fundación viven
en su mayoría, en zonas rurales de la Araucanía.
Estos tienen historias fantásticas para contar; cómo
aprendieron a hacer su oficio, cuándo empezaron y
cómo se sienten cuando están creando su trabajo.
Al consumidor de nuestros productos, buscamos
entregarle historia a su compra y compartir la
historia que hay detrás de cada pieza..
En el Día Mundial del Comercio Justo, presentamos
este proyecto en la Tienda de Comercio Justo
Rakizuam en el Museo Regional de la Araucanía.
Utilizamos el eslogan “Iniciativas innovadoras para
las personas”, generando una nueva posibilidad de
hacer visible el gran trabajo realizado por artesanos
y maestros regionales a través de la tecnología.
Ahora, cada producto tiene una etiqueta
especialque no solo tiene el nombre del artesano,
su comunidad, días de trabajo y los tintes utilizados,
sino que también tiene un código QR único. Cuando
se escanea este código QR, lo llevará a un video de
2 minutos sobre el artesano que hizo la pieza.
Estamos muy orgullosos de poder contar estas
increíbles historias de artesanos, y esperamos
que nos puedan visitar en la Tienda de Comercio
Justo Rakizuam.
The Chol Chol Foundation, as an organization and guaranteed member of the World Fair Trade
Organization (WFTO), seeks to generate better opportunities for development and awareness of
the culture, history and regional and national heritage.
The artisans who work with the Foundation live mostly in rural areas of Araucanía. And these
artisans have fantastic stories to tell; how they learned to do their job, when they started, and how
they feel when they are creating their work.
To the consumer of our products, we seek to give meaning to your purchase and share the story
behind each piece.
On World Fair Trade Day, we unveiled this project in the Rakizuam Fair Trade store in the
Regional Museum of Araucanía. We used the slogan “Innovative initiatives for people”, generating
a new possibility to make visible the great work carried out by artisans and regional teachers
through technology. Now, every product has a special tag that not only tells the customer the
artisan, their community, the number of working days, and dyes used, but it also has a unique QR
code. This QR code, when scanned, will take you to a 2-minute video about the artisan that made
the piece.
We are very proud to be able to tell these amazing artisans’ stories, and we hope you can visit us
in the Rakizuam Fair Trade Store.

technologie. Désormais, chaque produit a une étiquette spéciale qui indique non seulement au
client qui est l’artisan, sa communauté, le nombre de jours de travail et les colorants utilisés, mais
aussi un code QR unique. Ce code QR, une fois numérisé, vous mènera à une vidéo de 2 minutes
sur l’artisan qui a réalisé la pièce.

Textiles
Las artesanas de La Araucanía utilizan métodos que
rescatan la tradición textil del pueblo mapuche,
utilizando lana de oveja como materia prima. Todos los
productos creados hoy en día están elaborados con lana
de oveja de alta calidad, gracias a que cada maestra
artesana gira con sus manos la fibra de lana en un huso
tradicional; lo que permite que pueda conseguir el hilo
con el que posteriormente teje en el telar tradicional.
The artisans of Araucanía use methods that rescue the textile tradition of
the Mapuche people, using sheep wool as raw material. All the products
created today are made with high quality sheep wool, thanks to the master
craftswoman turning with her hands the wool fiber in a traditional spindle;
so that she can obtain the thread with which later she weaves in the
traditional loom.
Les artisans de La Araucanía utilisent des méthodes qui perpétuent la
tradition textile du peuple Mapuche en utilisant de la laine de mouton
comme matière première. Tous les produits créés aujourd’hui sont fabriqués
à partir de cette laine de haute qualité, grâce au travail effectué par une
artisane qui déroule avec ses mains la fibre de laine à l’aide d’une broche
traditionnel; ce qui lui permet d’obtenir le fil avec lequel elle tissera plus tard
ses pièces traditionnelles.

Teñido Natural
NATURAL DYES | COLORANTS NATURELS
La tradición textil mapuche es de larga data e implica un traspaso generacional,
especialmente de madre a hija. Los textiles de origen mapuche llevan en sí mismos una
riqueza cultural que es importante saber reconocer, en sus colores y simbología.
Las tejedoras asociadas a la Fundación Chol-Chol usan exclusivamente lana de oveja
para la elaboración de textiles. Los cuales son procesados en la protección de su hogar.
La técnica del telar mapuche es una técnica ancestral de tejido, en la que predominan los
símbolos geométricos y en la cual la tejedora tiene amplia libertad para repetir o recrear
símbolos, según el objetivo del textil. El proceso de elaboración es lento y exigente.
Generalmente, una tejedora realiza todo el proceso de elaboración de forma manual, que
incluye el lavado de la lana, el hilado, el teñido y el tejido.
El proceso del teñido natural se basa en colores obtenidos de la vegetación y de los
minerales presentes en la naturaleza, según las técnicas indígenas que se han traspasado
por generaciones. Escondidos entre cortezas, hojas, frutos, raíces y pétalos de flores, se
encuentran colores que, luego de ser hervidos, penetran la fibra de la lana para no salir
jamás. Siendo esta la gran ventaja del teñido natural: es eterno y único.
The Mapuche textile tradition is long-standing and involves a generational transfer, especially from mother to
daughter. Textiles of Mapuche origin carry in themselves a cultural richness that is important to know how to
recognize, in their colors and symbolism.
The weavers associated with the Chol-Chol Foundation use exclusively sheep wool for the production of textiles,
which is processed in the protection of their home. The technique of the Mapuche loom is an ancestral technique
of weaving, in which geometric symbols predominate and in which the weaver has ample freedom to repeat
or recreate symbols, according to the objective of the textile. The elaboration process is slow and demanding.
Generally, a weaver performs the entire manufacturing process manually, which includes washing the wool,
spinning, dyeing and weaving.
The natural dyeing process is based on colors obtained from vegetation and minerals present in nature, according
to indigenous techniques that have been passed down for generations. Hidden among bark, leaves, fruits, roots
and flower petals, colors are found that, after being boiled, penetrate the fiber of the wool to never leave. This
being the great advantage of natural dyeing: it is eternal and unique.
La tradition textile des Mapuches est ancienne et implique una transmission de génération en génération, en
particulier de mère à fille. Les textiles d’origine mapuche portent en eux une richesse culturelle qu’il est important
de savoir reconnaître, dans leurs couleurs et leur symbolisme.
Les artisans textiles associés à la Fondation Chol-Chol utilisent exclusivement de la laine de mouton pour la
production de textiles. La technique du métier à tisser Mapuche est une technique ancestrale de tissage, dans
laquelle les symboles géométriques prédominent et dans laquelle l’artisan a toute liberté pour répéter ou recréer
des symboles, en fonction de l’objectif du textile. Le processus d’élaboration est lent et exigeant. Généralement,
un artisan exécute manuellement l’ensemble du processus de fabrication, qui comprend le lavage de la laine, le

Le processus de teinture naturelle est basé sur des couleurs obtenues à partir de végétation et de minéraux

El Proceso de Preparación de la Lana

Para crear tintes, normalmente, se hierve el material vegetal seleccionado durante
al menos una hora en agua dentro de una olla de hierro fundido.
To create dyes, normally the selected plant material is boiled for at least one hour in water in a cast iron pot.

El Origen del Color
COLOR ORGIN | L’ORIGINE DE LA COULEUR
Barro
El barro es el único recurso natural que sirve para teñir el color negro. Es difícil de obtener, puesto
que este tiene una composición especial que no resulta fácil de encontrar. Juntando el Barro con
sulfato se puede obtener un color café verdoso. Para extraer colores grises se mezcla el barro con
Eucalipto o Hualle.
Mud is the only natural resource used to dye the color black. It is difficult to obtain, since it has a special composition that
is not easy to find. By joining the mud with sulfate, a greenish-brown color can be obtained. To extract gray colors, mix
mud with Eucalyptus or Hualle.

Canelo

Matico
El matico es un arbusto cual flor florece en los meses de octubre y noviembre, entonces la
primavera chilena. No solo se usan las hojas y flores en la medicina mapuche, sino también se
puede obtener tintes de colores amarillentos.

Eucalipto
El Eucalipto no es una planta nativa de Chile, pero cultivada mucho en la región de la Araucanía
por su uso en la industria papelera. Para nosotros también es una buena fuente de tinte. Desde el
Eucalipto se puede extraer un lindo color café medio. Las hojas de eucaliptus pueden producir un
color beige. Juntando las hojas con barro u hollín se puede obtener varios colores grises.
The eucalyptus is not a native plant of Chile, but cultivated much in the region of the Araucanía for its use in the paper

obtener una variedad de colores. Con Sulfato de cobre se obtiene un amarillo claro. Un amarillo
más ocre se extrae añadiendo piedra alumbre o flor de Dalia. Usando solo la cascara de cebolla
se obtiene un color mostaza fuerte. Teñido lana natural gris con las cascaras resulta en un color
Dorado. Con sal se puede extraer un color bronce.
Normally onion peel is a waste that we throw away when we peel onions. Our artisans found a creative way to recycle

Boldo

pero igual puede servir como tinte natural. Desde sus hojas se obtiene un color café claro y desde
la cascara de un boldo viejo se extrae un color café fuerte.

Los orígenes de la alfarería se encuentran hace más de
10.000 años, en la Era Neolítica. La familia San Martín ha
dedicado sus vidas a la creación de réplicas arqueológicas
de piezas mapuches del área Centro Sur de Chile. Las piezas
que reproducen se remontan al año 1200 dC y las llevan
a las casas de cualquier persona que tenga interés en las
creaciones ancestrales de la cultura mapuche. De la mano
con eso, también hay piezas contemporáneas que combinan
este aspecto histórico con la cultura moderna actual.
The origins of pottery are found more than 10,000 years ago, in the Neolithic Era.
The San Martín family has dedicated their lives to the creation of archaeological
replicas of Mapuche pieces from the South Central area of Chile. The pieces they
reproduce date as far back as 1200 AD and bring them to the houses of anyone who
has an interest in the ancestral creations of the Mapuche culture. Hand-in-hand
with that, there are also contemporary pieces that blend this historical aspect with
modern culture today.
La poterie a ses origines il y a plus de 10 000 ans, à l’époque néolithique. La
famille San Martín a consacré sa vie à la création de répliques archéologiques de

La etimología de la palabra “artesanía” deriva de las palabras
latinas “artis-manus” que significa: arte con las manos.
La artesanía comprende, básicamente, obras y trabajos
realizados manualmente y con poca o nula intervención de
maquinaria que habitualmente son objetos decorativos o de
uso común. Al que se dedica a esta actividad se le denomina
artesano. La artesanía es una parte muy importante de la
identidad de cada pueblo. Por eso, conocer la artesanía de un
lugar, es una manera de conocer a su gente y su historia.
The etymology of the word “crafts” derives from the Latin words “artis-manus” that
means: art with your hands. The crafts comprise, basically, works made manually
and with little or no intervention of machinery that are usually decorative objects
or common use. Those who dedicate themselves to this activity are called artisans.
Crafts are a very important part of the identity of each area. Therefore, knowing the
craftsmanship of a place is a way to get to know its people and its history.
L’étymologie du mot “artisanat” provient des mots latins “artis-manus” qui signifie:
l’art avec vos mains. L’artisanat comprend essentiellement des travaux et des travaux
réalisés manuellement et avec peu ou pas d’intervention de machines qui sont

Historia de Fundacion Chol Chol
Estrategia de la Fundación
En 1953 el misionero estadounidense James Ward
Mundell llegó al sur de Chile para establecerse en la
comuna de Chol-Chol, se encontró con comunidades
en desigualdad social y con poco acceso a la educación,
las cuales carecían de alimentos y servicios de salud.
Ante esta situación y con el objetivo de “acabar con
el hambre en el mundo”, fue que tomó la decisión de
dejar el sacerdocio y fundar una organización que diera
apoyo a las personas excluidas del desarrollo local.
Fue entonces en el año 1971 que nace Fundación Chol
Chol. (Por ser años de dictadura en el país, la Fundación
opera administrativamente desde Estados Unidos.
Pero su trabajo es 100% nacional, tomando años más
tarde la figura lega chilena.)
In 1953, the American missionary James Ward Mundell arrived in southern Chile to
settle in the commune of Chol-Chol. He found communities in social inequality and
with little access to education, which also lacked food and health services. Faced
with this situation and with the objective of “ending hunger in the world,” he decided
to leave the priesthood and founded an organization that gave support to people
excluded from local development. It was then in 1971 that the Chol-Chol Foundation
was born. (In 1971, the Foundation was born in the United States because at that
time it was the dictatorship in Chile and could not operate administratively from Chile.
But its work is in Chile 100%. Then, when he could, he moved the entire Foundation
to Chile.)
En 1953, le missionnaire américain James Ward Mundell arriva dans le sud du Chili
pour s’installer dans la commune de Chol-Chol. Il découvrit que les communautés
vivaient dans l’inégalité sociale et n’avaient guère accès à l’éducation, faute de
nourriture et de services de santé. Face à cette situation et avec pour objectif de
“mettre fin à la faim dans le monde”, il a décidé de quitter le clergé et a fondé une
organisation venant en aide aux personnes exclues du développement local. C’est
en 1971 que la fondation Chol-Chol est née. (En 1971, la fondation est née aux
États-Unis car à cette époque, c’était la dictature au Chili et elle ne pouvait pas opérer
administrativement depuis le Chili. Mais son travail est au Chili à 100%, puis, quand
elle le pouvait, elle a pris la figure juridique chilienne.)
Fundación Chol-Chol ha modelado estrategias de desarrollo humano
para población rural y mapuche, durante más de 46 años de trayectoria
en la Araucanía, contemplando los distintos contextos históricos y
económicos que se han desarrollado en el país, en especial en relación
con la precariedad rural. Es así como hemos sido pioneros en potenciar
el desarrollo de la textilería Mapuche a través del Programa Mujeres, el
cual nació en la década del 90, y ha capacitado a cerca de 600 mujeres
rurales en distintas áreas y oficios. Este programa, como otros de
nuestra institución, nacieron con la finalidad de entregar herramientas
con pertinencia cultural que aportaran sustentabilidad económica a las
familias involucradas, y por ende, el acceso a la educación de los niños.
En la Actualidad, este programa aún existe, sin embargo, ha modificado
sus estrategias, profesionalizando una plataforma de Comercio Justo,
que da movilidad a la producción de artesanas, artesanos y cultores.
Al mismo tiempo, considerando eliminar estrategias paternalistas
de la década de los 90, comenzamos a incentivar la asociatividad
e independencia, en donde hoy podemos decir que trabajamos
con una red de 80 artesanas y artesanos expertos, con alta calidad
productiva, con dominio de costos y precios, con un sistema comercial
garantizado por organizaciones internacionales de Comercio Justo y
con 3 organizaciones base de productores que no dependen exclusiva y
económicamente de nuestra institución.
Fundación Chol-Chol has modeled human development strategies for the rural and Mapuche population
during more than 46 years of experience in Araucanía, contemplating the different historical and economic
contexts that have developed in the country, especially in relation to rural precariousness. This is how we
have been pioneers in promoting the development of Mapuche textiles through the Women’s Program, which
was born in the 90s, and has trained about 600 rural women in different areas and trades. This program, like
others of our institution, was born with the purpose of delivering tools with cultural relevance that provide
economic sustainability to the families involved, and therefore, access to children’s education. Currently, this
program still exists, however, it has modified its strategies, utilizing a Fair Trade platform, which gives mobility
to the production of the artisans. At the same time, considering eliminating paternalistic strategies of the 90s,
we began to encourage associativity and independence, where today we can say that we work with a network
of 80 skilled artisans and craftsmen, with high productive quality, cost control and prices, with a commercial
system guaranteed by international Fair Trade organizations and with 3 producer base organizations that do
not depend exclusively and economically on our institution.
La Fundación Chol-Chol a élaboré des stratégies de développement humain pour les populations rurales
et mapuches au cours de plus de 46 ans d’expérience en Araucanie, en examinant les différents contextes
historiques et économiques qui se sont développés dans le pays, en particulier en ce qui concerne la
précarité rurale. C’est ainsi que nous avons été des pionniers dans la promotion du développement des
textiles mapuches grâce au programme Femmes, né dans les années 90, qui a formé environ 600 femmes
rurales dans différents domaines et métiers. Ce programme, comme d’autres de notre institution, est né
dans le but de fournir des outils ayant une pertinence culturelle qui assurent la durabilité économique des
familles concernées et, par conséquent, l’accès à l’éducation des enfants. À l’heure actuelle, ce programme
existe toujours, cependant, il a modifié ses stratégies, en professionnalisant une plate-forme de commerce
équitable, qui permet une mobilité à la production d’artisans, artisans et agriculteurs. En même temps, en
considérant l’élimination des stratégies paternalistes des années 90, nous avons commencé à encourager
l’associativité et l’indépendance, où nous pouvons aujourd’hui affirmer que nous travaillons avec un réseau

un système commercial garanti par les organisations internationales du commerce équitable et avec 3
