An access road needed to be built between the space of two warehouse, for the transit of 45tn trucks. The road is to be 100m (328ft) long and it required an embankment of 4.0m (13.5ft) high. In order to conform this structure and because of the different grades between the warehouses, a retaining wall had to be constructed. Some alternatives of conventional retaining walls were studied, to adequately confine an existing debris fill of marble, and to assure the stability of the neighbor warehouse and to obtain an appropriate and safe access road. The article presents a summary of the retaining wall alternatives studied, the reasons for selection of the reinforced earth structure as an innovative solution in a limited space available, the basic design considerations in order to assure the internal stability of the reinforced earth wall with woven geotextil, the material used to built it, and the construction procedure and compaction method adopted.
