. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .EXPERIENCIAS OLD GRADS. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Celebrating100th birthdayLamentablemente cuando el Bulletin se estaba diseñando,el Sr. Terence Greig Van de Velde falleció.Compartimos la nota que escribió su hija Diana Van de VeldeBVI 1975 y el post que publicó en Instagram su nieta, SoniaHaddad, resumiendo muy bien su legado.Terence Greig Van de Velde,born in England in 1918, fatherand grandfather of pastpupils, celebrated his onehundredth birthday and receiveda birthday card and messagefrom Her Majesty QueenElizabeth II.My sister Christine (CV 1972),my daughter Sonia (Economics2004), and myself (BVI1975), together with the restof the family, of course, havebeen lucky enough to havecelebrated our father andgrandfather’s one hundredthbirthday on 30th December2018. We thought it would benice to share our joy with theMichael Ham community, asour parents chose this wonderfulschool for their daughters’education, way back inthe 1960s, choice we are sograteful for, as I’m sure Soniais as well, as she followed ourfootsteps.Terry, as he is known, wasborn in Fulham, London,England, on 30th December1918, at the end of World WarI. He was the second of sevensiblings and in the same wayhis father had been enlistedduring WWI, when WWIIbroke out, our father, havingqualified as an Aircraft RadioOfficer and Service Engineerfor the Marconi Company,became a recruit in the RoyalSignals Battalion at WoolwichBarracks. Our fatherquickly learnt the use ofnew tools such as emails andSkype, and was able to keep intouch with family and friendsabroad, in a far quicker andmore personalized way.A keen golfer, he managed toplay golf until the age of 88,accompanied by his grandsonDiego, at the time around 20years old, who after the matchenjoyed drinks, lunch andchit chat with all the oldies!Amongst many other things,he taught us the love forsports, like hockey, and openair activities, accompanyingus to important sports eventsin our life such as our schoolsports in the “Quinta” or hockeyseven-a-sides.Although his mind is clear,unfortunately, he has beenbed-ridden for the last threeyears, but we admire his enduranceand will power, ashe never complains and stillhopes he will be able to walkone day.Christine formed her familyin Madrid, Spain, so he wasalways happy when he travelledto see her and her children,Marcos and Diana, orwhen they came over to visithim here. Last May, Sonia gotmarried, and all the familygot together to celebrate herwedding, including his threegreat-granddaughters, Sofía,Alba and Daniela. He enjoyedhaving all the family aroundhim. Last December, Christine,Marcos and Sofía joinedus in celebrating Pops’s onehundredth birthday. He wasdelighted when, not only didwe give him a photobookrepresenting different significantevents throughout his100 years, but we also presentedhim with a birthdaycard and message from HerMajesty Queen Elizabeth II,which is now hanging on thewall where he can see it everyday. Thanks to our parents’ upbringing,we, ourselves, haveraised wonderful families followingtheir teachings.Diana Van de Velde BVI 197519
