The issue is, the Spanish-languagetelevision seen in the United States isproduced mostly in Mexico, meaning, most of the content being consumed iscatered to a Mexican audience. Due tothis centrism, the social advancementsof other countries have unfortunatelybeen unable to be seen within the media.Nonetheless, novelas in Mexico havebegun to make strides towards betterrepresentation such as, the 2019 novela“Juntos, el corazon nunca se equivoca”,which was one of the first to include agay couple front and center. Anotherexample is with the telenovela Amar aMuerte, released in 2018, which featureda lesbian couple in its subplot. However, this process pales in comparison toother television companies who’ve beenadvancing faster socially than the wellestablishedproduction companies.Netflix is producing more content withbetter representation of non-white andMestizo Latinx actors and queer storiesthat novelas hadn’t bothered to coverbefore. An example of a series that doesthis is, La Casa de las Flores by Netflix, which contains multiple queer storiesand went into deeper themes that manyhave been wanting to see from Spanishlanguagecontent. Telemundo, a Spanishlanguagecontent producer, has recentlybeen making more progressive stridesthan the Mexico-based Televisa, mostrecently with La Suerte de Loli. Thistelenovela grants visibility to traditionallyunderrepresented Latinos, notablyAsian-Latinx, Afro-Latinx, Plus-Size, andQueer Latinx people.Nostalgia can be a wonderful thing, itbrings us back to better times and makesus feel good. It comes in various differentforms and telenovelas are no exception. We feel happy and nostalgic when wesee novelas such as Rebelde, Teresa,Rubí, and Cuidado con el Ángel butunfortunately, in retrospect, they havemany painfully obvious flaws that wehave to take into consideration. You canand should continue to enjoy this contentbut always make sure that you do notlet nostalgia blind you to the issues thatplague telenovelas and Spanish-languagecontent.Telenovelas have united us throughgood memories and are still enjoyableto watch but we need to keep in mindwhat telenovelas lack and demandimprovement from our media. Wedeserve better, our community andpeople deserve to see themselves in themedia we consume.ostalgia15
