Era el verano del 2006 la primera vez que visité Mérida.
Llegué directo a hacer check-in al Hotel Trinidad después
de haber recorrido mas de 1,500 kilómetros por carretera.
El hotel estaba en la calle 60 con 51 en el centro de la ciudad.
Un lugar repleto de obras de arte, antigüedades y curiosidades
ubicadas por todo el sitio con un orden caótico y caprichoso;
lo que había sido el showroom de una agencia automotriz
era utilizado como lobby del hotel, el cual conectaba con una
galería de arte y una tienda de antigüedades. Había plantas,
fuentes, esculturas y esferas de cristal creando una ecléctica
atmósfera surrealista tropical.
Mientras tanto Manolo, el dueño del hotel, se preparaba
para su próximo y el que fuera el último viaje de su vida.
Unos días después viajaría a Asia en una travesía de placer
en la que además aprovecharía para comprar más tapetes,
artesanías y curiosidades para su hotel y galería, los cuales
manejaba de forma simultánea borrando los límites entre
uno y otro.
Manolo Rivero, galerista, coleccionista y mecenas de
arte, nació en Mérida, Yucatán en 1941 y murió mientras
sobrevolaba el Océano Atlántico a mediados del 2006.
Entre sus múltiples proyectos, tal vez el más relevante y al
que más energía y cariño le dedicó, fue al Hotel Trinidad,
nombrado así en honor a su madre, y el cual más que un
hotel fungió como un verdadero centro cultural y social con
gran influencia en los años ochentas y noventas. Manolo,
con un estilo de vida peculiar y excéntrico para su época,
siendo admirado y reconocido por su gran aportación al
arte de la región y además por apoyar a los artistas cubanos
de los años noventa durante el régimen de Castro, era un
artista que creaba ambientes y conexiones a través del arte
de los demás.
Más de diez años después de aquella primera visita, nos
encontramos de nuevo en Mérida tratando de entender y
reconstruir la influencia de Manolo en la vida cultural de la
ciudad.
Y justo aquí, en la antigua fábrica de Don José Rivero -padre de
Manolo-, la cual hemos trasformado para concebir Salón Gallos,
un conjunto de iniciativas culturales dentro de lo que fueron
bodegas industriales de Avena Rivero, es que celebramos su
legado comenzando una nueva historia cultural.
En Salón Gallos nos interesa el cine, el arte, el diseño y
la literatura, así como la gastronomía y la música. Lo que
tienes en tus manos, es la primera publicación mensual de
nuestro programa de actividades; aquí podrás consultar
nuestra cartelera, eventos e iniciativas, así como contenidos
diversos por colaboradores invitados en los cuales abordaremos
temas vinculados a nuestra comunidad.
Esperamos que sea de tu interés y que lo disfrutes, pero,
sobre todo, que conectes con nosotros y seas parte de la
familia Gallos.
It was the summer of 2006 the first time I came to Mérida,
I arrived directly to check-in at Hotel Trinidad after having
traveled more than 1,500 kilometers by road. The hotel was
on Calle 60 and 51 in the center of the city. A place full of art,
antiques and curiosities located throughout the site with a
chaotic and whimsical order. What had been the showroom of
a car dealership was used as a hotel lobby which connected with
an art gallery and an antique shop. There were plants, fountains,
sculptures and glass spheres creating an eclectic surreal tropical
atmosphere.
Meanwhile Manolo, the hotel owner, was preparing himself
for his next and what would be the last trip of his life. A
few days later he would travel to Asia on a pleasure trip in
which he would also take the opportunity to buy more rugs,
handicrafts and curiosities for his hotel and gallery, which
he operated simultaneously, erasing the limits between
one and the other.
Manolo Rivero, gallerist, collector and art patron, was born
in Mérida, Yucatán in 1941 and died while flying over the
Atlantic Ocean in mid-2006. Among his many projects,
perhaps the most relevant and to which he devoted the
most energy and affection was Hotel Trinidad, named after
his mother, and which, more than a hotel, served as a true
cultural and social center with great influence in the 80s
and 90s. Manolo, with a peculiar and eccentric lifestyle
for his time, being admired and recognized for his great
contribution to the art of the region and by supporting
Cuban artists in the 90s during the Castro regime; was
himself an artist creating environments and connections
through the art of others.
More than ten years after that first visit, we find ourselves
back in Merida trying to understand and reconstruct Manolo’s
influence on the cultural life of the city.
And right here, in the old factory of Don José Rivero -Manolo’s
father-, which we have transformed to conceive Salón Gallos,
a set of cultural initiatives within what were Avena Rivero’s
industrial wineries, is that we celebrate his legacy by stating
a new cultural program.
At Salón Gallos we are interested in cinema, art, design and
literature, as well as gastronomy and music. What you hold
in your hands, is the first monthly publication of our program
of activities; here, you can learn too about our events and
initiatives, and find diverse contents by guest collaborators
in which we will address subjects related to our community.
We hope you enjoy it, participate and make you feel part of
Salón Gallos.
