various plant species and is presented in a
simple vocabulary.
La Provincia de Huasco, Región de
Atacama. República de Chile
The Province of Huasco, Atacama
Region, Republic of Chile
“The Province of Huasco is located in the
southern region of the Atacama Desert
among mountain ranges wherein flows the
Huasco River which originates in the high
Andes Mountain Range and empties into
the Pacific Ocean. The Province covers a
surface area of 19,066 Km², and is home to
a population of 66,491 inhabitants. It is
composed of several small communities:
Alto del Carmen, Vallenar, Huasco and
Freirina, and is home to several small towns
and outlying villages. The weather is
primarily dominated by semi-arid
conditions with very limited and sporadic
rainfall throughout the year. Its coastal area
is usually cloudy until mid-day, becoming
warmer as the precipitation dissipates
under the intensity of the region’s sunlight;
the weather becomes hotter and drier in the
inland areas towards the mountains where
temperatures then begin to decrease and
drier conditions increase.”

Llanos Costeros
Coastal Flatlands
The Coastal Flatlands of the Province are
located between the Pacific Ocean moving
inland up to the foothills of the Coastal
Range. The distance between these flatlands
and the foothills of the Coastal Range varies
significantly: in some areas it is almost
nonexistent, while in other sectors these
flatlands spread out over an area of several
kilometers in all directions. It is these
particular areas of relatively expanse
flatlands that provide an excellent vantage
point from which to observe the extremely
colorful flora during the “Desert in Bloom”
phenomenon.
Coastal Range
The Coastal Range of the Province is
composed of a series of mountains of
moderate altitude that rise to an average
height of 800 meters above sea level, aligns
in a north-south direction, and is
interrupted by the flow of the Huasco River.
The slopes, hills and valleys provide fertile
habitat for a wide range and variety of
flora, whose survival depends essentially on
the moisture provided by the regular
appearance of early morning fog that blows
in from the coast.
Vallenar y Freirina. Su caudal
ininterrumpido se descarga en el Océano
Pacífico, a 4 kilómetros al norte de Huasco
Puerto, en donde un humedal alberga una
gran biodiversidad.
Huasco Valley
The Huasco Valley is the geographical axis
of he Province. It originates in “Las
Juntas”, near the town of Alto del Carmen
where the El Transito and El Carmen
Rivers converge into the Huasco River,
which then flows west passing through the
cities of Vallenar and Freirina, finally
emptying into the Pacific Ocean, 4
kilometers north of the Port of Huasco, but
not before creating a large wetland area
which provides a lush and fertile habitat for
a wide range of biodiversity.
The Andes Range
The Andes Mountain Range is the highest
altitude land area in the Province of
Huasco. This enormous Range (primarily a
rock mass) runs in a north-south direction
and its most elevated peaks are located on
the Chilean Argentinian border. The Range
gives birth to the tributary streams of the
Huasco River which is the central source of
water for the Province. The Andes
Mountains within the borders of the
Province are home to many small towns,
communities and indigenous villages, and is
also a rich and fertile hábitat for a great
diversity of endemic flora.
contempla flora submarina.
Facts for Consideration
The Province of Huasco is located in the Atacama Desert--commonly known as
the most arid zone on earth and is situated in a section called “Norte
Chico” (Little North). This area is bordered on the north by the Copiapó River and
on the south by the Aconcagua River. The seasons of the year mentioned in this
work correspond to the seasonal periods in the southern hemisphere. The native
flora of Chile is protected by law. Its extraction is forbidden. The maps in this
work are only figurative, and are not authorized in any way by the government of
Chile. This work is the result of personal field observation and data collected from
the sources mentioned in the “References” section. The phenomenon of the
“Desert in Bloom” is totally dependent on a light to medium winter rainfall, which
does not take place every year. Therefore the Desert in Bloom floral event is not a
regular yearly occurrence. Native Flora of the Province of Huasco” does not
include submarine flora.

The province of Huasco is located in a small corner of the Atacama Desert and has
evolved into a very fertile habitat for an extraordinary variety of plants, each one
with its own unique fragrance, size, shape and color (ranging from subtle and pale
to bright and brilliant). Those of us who understand the intimate connection
between the human sphere and the biosphere should feel the need to inspire and
promote a deeper understanding and appreciation for the remarkable beauties and
wonders of such a special natural heritage. It should be the responsibility of each of
us to labor incessantly to promote an understanding as to the vulnerability as well as
the fragility of many of these species. We should also take it upon ourselves to
promote an understanding of the urgent need to protect and preserve the enormous
variety of native flora and fauna extant in the Atacama Region, which is currently
under constant threat from the many and varied aspects of urbanization. There is
also an urgent need to generate a culture of sensitivity, of sympathy and support for
the collective and individual conservation efforts currently taking place to protect
and preserve the existence of this remarkable natural habitat. The creation of
nationally protected parks, natural reserves and/or gardens containing the many
species endemic to Huasco would be a significant step forward in the achievement of
the above mentioned needs. This would help the people of the province develop a
pride for the region’s flora; at the same time these areas could serve as interesting
tourist attractions for the local and regional population as well as for national
tourists. The ornamentation of avenues with native species would be a great
resource in helping to generate sympathy, identity and deeper appreciation for the
unique flora of the region. This, combined with local and regionally sponsored
running and trekking events, along with tour visits to the wild, would help create
interest and respect for the natural bio-diversity. The habitat of the native flora of
Huasco requires rigorous environmental impact studies as well as strict adherence
to the Precautionary Principle before any industrial, urban or agricultural projects
are considered. The population of vegetal species has decreased significantly in
many areas and completely disappeared in others. Extinction of species is
unacceptable, especially in areas such as the Huasco Province where the species’
hábitats are already very fragile due to the harsh natural environmental conditions
of the desert. Hopefully this work will be of some help in generating the urgently
needed awareness and sensitivity to help avoid the demise of another of the world’s
diminishing natural habitats.
