Episodes of care – procedures and interventions 2010
9 December 2011
For the year 2010, a total of 621,731 episodes of care, involving one or more coded procedures or
interventions, were performed were recorded in the Finnish Care Register (terveydenhuollon
hoitoilmoitusrekisteri, HILMO). These represent 48% of all concluded care episodes, a four
percentage point increase on 2009.
A total of 429,317 care episodes (69%) were associated with surgical procedures and 192,414 with
other interventions. This represented an increase of 1.1% in surgical procedures and a 22%
increase in other interventions in comparison with the previous year (34,168 additional episodes).
Episodes of care involving procedures and interventions were recorded for 487,504 patients in
2010. The average age of the patient was 52. The number of procedures performed on the over-
75s has doubled since 2000. In the same period, the number of procedures performed on working
age adults has increase by 26% and on 65-74-year-olds by 60%.
The three most common areas for intervention in 2010 were the musculo-skeletal system,
digestive system and associated organs as well as the eyes and adjacent systems.
The rise in care episodes involving intervention and procedures in 2005 can for the most part be
attributed to the introduction of the statutory care guarantee. In subsequent years, the number of
actual surgical procedures has levelled. The increase evident since 2008 is mostly due to the new
classification codes and improved recording practices.
