Spa manager.
Brand name choices
from a Spa Manager’s point of view
The expansion of Spas in the Wellness economy is
often about the products, because care treatments
and massages are the basic activities of a Spa, and
the products are an essential part of it.
During the creation of a spa, independently or in a
hotel, the products are at the heart of the concept
process, not only because of the care treatments, but
because of the publicity it will bring (the client will
also like to buy the products to continue the Spa
experience at home) and as a means of communication.
In certain Spas, retail sales represent up to
35% of the turnover. The choice of a brand is
therefore an important strategic decision.
Hotels and investors will prefer Spas created by well
known brands, since part of the publicity is directly
taken care of.
In order to answer all questions, we have turned to
the main concerned, the Spas Managers. Three
women, renowned experts of the Wellness
industry, share their thoughts on the
universe of brand names and tell
us what motivates a Spa
Manager’s choice.
Cristel TOUZE-DURAND
Spa manager du Resort Golf & Spa le Relais de Margaux, France
Cristel TOUZE-DURAND
“You can’t just call yourself a Spa in order
to convince us. I believe that the brands,
but also the manufacturers, will need to
make efforts be it communication-wise or
care treatment concept-wise if they want
to last in the Spa industry”.
( Question ? Réponses/Question? Answers )
Cristel TOUZE-DURAND
(Spa manager of the ‘Resort Golf & Spa’ at
the ‘Relais de Margaux’, France)
EMOTION SPA Magazine: What are your criteria when
choosing a brand of cosmetics or a care treatment for
your Spa?
Cristel TOUZE-DURAND: For me, the most important
thing is that the image of the brand be in harmony with
the identity of the Spa. Rituals are also very important.
I like brands which offer protocols combining results and
ceremonial, not to mention the boutique aspect of it all.
My final criterion is that the brand be a partner: publicity
offers, trainings, quality follow-up. For example, we
have created a « Privilege Card » in synergy with our
main brand Thalgo. Our personnel have been trained
and know the brand’s rituals. They also have a global
Spa approach to the client’s care treatments. It’s the
right combination of know-how and ‘know-how-to-be’.
The ‘know-how-to-be’ is an important element in the
Wellness business. As for the ‘Sultane de Saba’, our 2nd
brand, I was seduced by its notoriety, its refined and
unique universe. It regularly offers new rituals and
knows how to listen to our
needs. In order to meet the
clientele’s new. In conclusion,
it is essential that
brands put forth their philosophy
and their care treatments
offers because there
are so many possibilities in
today’s market that it is
becoming complicated, for
us Spa Managers, to choose
what is best for our clients
needs as well as our own.
ESM: What do you expect
from a brand?
C.T.D: First of all, I expect a
brand to answer the client’s
needs. Clients are more than
ever informed and demanding.
They want results as well
as a multi-sensorial experience,
and they want the
effects to last after the care treatment. It is important that
the brands keep this in mind with regards to in-cabin care
treatments. They need to offer new textures and scents
that make you travel, new active ingredients, an inventive
gestural and … a real ceremonial. Too many brands
are still in the ‘institute’ phase and haven’t fully integrated
the demands that a Spa sets.
ESM: What do you think about the evolution of cosmetic
brands?
C.T.D : Spas are definitely an important market, strongly
implanted in the consumers’ habits. It is absolutely
not a trend but in fact the answer to Man’s fundamental
needs. All brands are more or less searching to integrate
this new factor into their development but, as I said
before, it is difficult to differentiate marketing from
authenticity. The Spa has become a melting pot. You
can’t just call yourself a Spa in order to convince us. I
believe that the brands, but also the manufacturers, will
sur les zones cellulitiques. C’est l’un de nos appareils phare ;
« LeSpa By Accor Thalassa ».
Ces produits ont été élaborés à base
d’algues et d’huiles essentielles. Notre
intérêt pour les produits naturels et les
huiles essentielles nous a amenés à travailler
en collaboration avec Décléor
pour son savoir-faire et son expertise
dans ce domaine. Nous avons aussi
choisi Carita dont l’expérience et la
notoriété, surtout en matière de soins
anti-âge, n’est plus à prouver. Carita,
make efforts be it communication-wise
or care treatment concept-wise
if they want to last in the Spa industry. An
un-known brand, even if it has inventive and quality
care treatments, can’t hope to impose itself on a market
where image is everything. Our clients need to recognize
a product in order to adopt it. It’s the same for us.
It seems vital to me that, in the long run, we need to
find a way to define the word ‘Spa’ in order to clarify the
offers, be it for the consumer or for the brands and the
managers.
ESM: What is, for you, a profitable Spa care treatment
menu?
C.T.D: A profitable Spa care treatment menu is the right
combination of very personalized care treatments with
« equipment » care treatments, and this without giving
the client the impression that we are abandoning them
in the care treatment cabin, which is usually the case in
Thalassatherapy centres, at least that what our clients
tell us. This is why we have chosen equipment which
gives a global client satisfaction as of the first session,
like with the ‘Spa Jet’ by Sybaritic or the ‘Watermass’,
which is a massaging machine that « palpates & rolls »,
well known for its positive action on cellulite zones. It’s
one of our top machines, totally painless. It allows for a
particularly strong yet gentle ’palpate & roll’ massage,
thanks to water, with essential oils added, heated to
37°C which arrives into the machine. We also offer day
packages, always with a manual care treatment. This
allows for a better scheduling readability, from equipment
amortization to Spa occupation percentage. In
fact, realistically, the profitability of a Spa depends
greatly on the ratio between the cost of products and
the cost of salaries. It is also important to emphasise
that sales are an important part of the Spa profitability.
Unfortunately, the schools seem to neglect the sales
aspect of beautician trainings. Sales are a natural addition
to the care treatment. This is a factor they still
haven’t comprehended.
EMOTIONSPA_SectionUniversSpas 11/06/06 9:41 Page 85
partenariat.
« Le retail est non seulement un
facteur de chiffre d’affaires
important pour un Spa, mais
aussi un outil de fidélisation à la
marque et au soin cabine ».
“Sales are not only an important income
Marie Blanche CASANOVA,
Spa manager of the « Spa by Accor Thalassa »
and of the Thalassatherapy Center in the Sofitel Timi-
Ama in Sardinia, Italy
EMOTION SPA Magazine: What are your criteria when
choosing a brand of cosmetics or a care treatment for
your Spa?
Marie-Blanche CASANOVA: Let me explain something:
The Sofitel Timi-Ama is a Thalassatherapy centre that
has been doing well for many years now, and as of last
year, we have decided to follow the Spa movement
with a concept called « LeSpa, by Accor Thalassa ». Both
entities live together. This is why I use the products used
by the Group, that is to say « Accor Thalassa Institute »
products as well as new products
from our « LeSpa By Accor Thalas-
sa » line. These products are made
from seaweed and essential oils.
Our interest for natural products
and essential oils led us to collaborate
with Décléor for their knowhow
and their expertise in the
field. We have also chosen Carita,
whose experience and notoriety,
especially with regards to antiaging
products, no longer needs to
be proven. Carita also means Paris,
France… our clients are eager to
discover the virtues. For us, it is a
good partnership.
ESM: What do you expect from a brand?
MBC: Experience, seriousness, efficiency. I also like products
to be part of a protocol. I like brands that offer their
clients an accompaniment. For example, to apply a
cream, the client feels accompanied at home, just as
they are by a beautician in the Spa. Sales are not only
an important income for a Spa but it also makes clients
faithful to a brand and to in-cabin care treatments.
Renewal and innovation are important factors for a so
called Spa brand, because the Spa industry is even more
demanding than the institute industry. We must withhold
the image the word Spa implies and the brands are
there to help us.
ESM: What do you expect from a brand?
MBC : I like the present synergy between certain brands
and Spas. This is a guarantee of seriousness. It seems
obvious to me that a Spa is the perfect place to develop
products. It even has its own distribution network. It’s
another way to show its know-how, to convey a more
high quality image and diversify its
activity by surfing on the Spa trend,
something which is quite difficult seeing
how the offer, according to me, lack
of clarity. The brands must make communication
efforts with regards to the
professionals who are the first in line.
ESM: What is, for you, a profitable Spa
care treatment menu?
MBC: To show that you are professional,
you must also know how to manage
your Spa and its profitability. In a Spa,
Dr Evelyne REYT we always try to do our best and wish to
offer quality care treatments, thus a lot
of time and competence, quality products.
You have to give yourself the means to succeed.
Spa-Managers
Cinq Mondes, Carita, Kanebo, Thalgo, La Sultane De Saba, Klapp…
cost and will be more expensive than an ordinary care
treatment because the price of the product, the operation
institute.
EMOTION SPA Magazine: What are your criteria when
Dr Evelyne REYT: For me, a multi brand Spa can offer its
with its concept and its care treatment program.
This strategy is in accordance with the hotel management’s
desired orientation in order to differentiate ourselves
from the others. The brands are carefully chosen.
It’s a true partnership.
My criteria are the following: the association of the brand
with the Spa’s concept, the quality of the products and
the innovation potential, the profitability, and I need to
feel a true implication of the brand in the training and
marketing field. At the ‘Evian Royal Spa’, I work with
many brands: La Prairie, Anne
Carita, Kanebo, Thalgo, La Sultane
ESM: What do you expect
from a brand?
Dr E.R: I expect a beautiful
image, performing care treatments,
efficient products, a
true quality, an originality. I
also need for the brands to be
well marketed, easy for my
team to sell. I like a true evolving
partnership based on communication,
information and
valuing.
ESM: What do you expect from a brand?
Dr E.R: The cosmetic brands, and more specifically the
Spa brands, have evolved well and are more and more
adapted to our needs. I like to offer in my care treatment
menu classic renowned cosmetic brands as well as typical
Spa brands. The combination of expert Institute brands
and Spa branded products is a winning alchemy which
allows us to answer the specific needs of our clients who
want: results, personalization and wellness.
ESM: What is, for you, a profitable Spa care treatment
menu?
Dr E.R: It all depends on the Spa. When the Spa is small
in size and in personnel, one well adapted brand will be
easy to install and can be profitable with the advice of
the brand’s professionals or external consultants. For
a bigger Spa which wished to differentiate itself,
all variations are possible with a manager
who wishes to create a complete concept
and to develop it, as I have done at the
‘Royal Parc Evian’ with the « regeneration
» principle.
There is no miracle recipe. Anything
is possible if you are professional,
if you have intuition and rigour.
