The AIBA Executive
Committee passed a number
of crucial decisions for the
benefit of the entire boxing
family
AIBA President Ching-
Kuo Wu emphasised to
members of the
Executive Committee
that the “hard work
starts now”, during his
closing speech in the
first Executive Committee
meeting which was
held in Taipei, Taiwan in
February.
Thirty one members from around the
world completed two days of important
decision making with President
Wu as the new AIBA continued to
build a bright and innovative era for
boxing in an effort to return to the
elite of international sports.
“There were many decisions but now we
need to execute,” President Wu said.
“We can see the amount of work but
we are serious and let’s try and show
that AIBA is ready to change. AIBA is
a place where everybody can speak
and everybody can express there view
because only the collective ideas can
do the best for boxing and AIBA.
Hard work now
“We must plan, 30 years ahead and
hold hands. Without any vision you
can’t survive, especially Olympic families.
With 195 member federations,
we are one of the largest. We can be
Executive Committee Meeting –
Comments from the members
“What struck me was the fact that there
was an open and transparent way of
discussing all items. Members had plenty
of time to have the floor, to give opinions
and people listened to each other. Time
was not the leader, the items were!”
Mr. Ed van Wijk
Medical Commission Chairman
“The Executive Meeting in Taiwan was
transparent, and members of the AIBA
EC and the Commission Chairmen were
given due consideration by the President
to express their views fully. AIBA is on
the right track under the able leadership
of Dr. Wu.”
Mr. Adi Narayan
Finance Commission Chairman
“This is the AIBA that I have been dreaming
of, a democratic body where everyone
can contribute to boxing and make it the
great spectacle that it is.”
Mr. Rudel Obreja
Technical and Rules Commission
Chairman
“The conduct and the success of the meeting
will go a long way to resuscitating
and establishing boxing back to its true
position in the world of sport. It was a
great start to the beginning of the hope of
the new executive members, to win back
the old glory of amateur boxing worldwide.”
Reform Committee,
chaired by IOC Executive
Board member Gerhard
Heiberg, held its first
three-day meeting in
Taipei in February.
The Committee consists of a 10-member
panel including four AIBA Executive
Committee members and six outside
experts.
At the end of the meeting, the Committee
issued the following statement:
“The Committee is dedicated to an
AIBA centred on the athlete, the principle
of transparency, and the ideals
of the Olympic Charter.
The Reform Committee congratulates
AIBA for the positive changes introduced
in the last four months. Credit
for these changes must be given to the
new AIBA President, Dr. Ching-Kuo
Wu. Dr. Wu’s emphasis on integrity
and the new introduction of sound
policy have guided the first steps toward
the positive transformation of
boxing.”
Reform Committee
AIBA President Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu (left)
with Reform Committee chairman Gerhard Heiberg
Mr. Heiberg added: “The Reform Committee
is working to establish a framework
upon which the sport may build
for years to come. We thank Dr. Wu for
giving us the opportunity to be part of
this affirmative revolution in the sport
of boxing.”
The Committee is due to meet again
in May and hopes to finalize its work
“Education the key”
says Reform
Committee chairman
The chairman of the AIBA Reform
Committee Mr. Gerhard Heiberg said
that educating the public, officials and
athletes about amateur boxing will be
the key to improving the image of the
sport.
The Reform Committee is charged
with drawing up objective evaluations
on the current AIBA and boxing
movement, understanding all the
intentions of building the new AIBA
and develop new recommendations
on specific issues to reform AIBA and
the sport.
“We have to educate and inform the
public in order to erase the misconception
that surrounds boxing,” Mr. Heiberg,
who is an IOC Executive Board
member and the chairman of the IOC
Marketing Commission, said. “It’s a
wonderful sport which has a strong
and passionate history but the key is
to give a little bit of background of the
AIBA image and this will help modernize
the sport of boxing.”
A Big Thank You
The Reform Committee is very grateful
to everyone who took the time to
send in their thoughts on the new
AIBA and this new era in boxing
through the ‘Reform Questionnaire’,
which was distributed in February.
The Reform Committee has collected
opinions from all sectors of boxing
and in order to be able to enhance
this process, the opinions of you, the
boxing family, were needed to help
and guide the committee in their task
to improve AIBA and the sport of
boxing.
We highly appreciate your help and
your time.
Yours sincerely
AIBA News
Welcome to AIBA Headquarters
The head office of the International Boxing Association in
Lausanne, Switzerland, under the direction of Executive
Director Mr. Ho Kim, has undergone a major transformation
in recent months, reflecting the new drive and determination
within AIBA to see boxing return to the top of
the sporting world.
The staff at AIBA headquarters in Switzerland with AIBA
President Dr. C.K. Wu (front row left to right) Jérôme Jaccoud,
Elena Spring, Dr. Wu, Deqa Hussen, and Ellen
Boydens. (Back row left to right) Djamel Merzkani, Jorge
Vazquez-Monroy, Ho Kim, Xavier Lambercy, Richard Baker
Finance - Mr. Jérôme Jaccoud
Transparency and efficiency are the two key ingredients in
the workings of the Finance Department for 2007 and beyond.
Its main mission is to ensure accounting is done according
to AIBA Financial Regulations and Swiss accounting
rules whilst meeting the highest quality standard.
Member Relations & Development - Ms. Deqa Hussen
The AIBA Member Relations and Development Department
provides assistance to 195 national federations in their activities
and development programs. The ultimate aim is to
create a close collaboration with national federations in
order to have unity behind AIBA’s drive towards the development
of boxing around the world.
PR and Communications - Mr. Richard Baker
The PR and Communications Department has the exciting
task of delivering on the new image and objectives of AIBA
through a number of means from brand management
through to the promotion of regular dialogue and interaction
with the media, AIBA members, stakeholders and
partners. The new AIBA vision encapsulates a transparent
and open policy for the best of boxing, and these key principles
will be the pillars of the working policy in the PR and
Communications Department.
IT, Logistics & Anti Doping - Mr. Xavier Lambercy
With Anti Doping playing an increasingly important role in
the general organization of all sporting federations, AIBA
has set, as a priority, the improvement boxing’s Anti Doping
process through modernization of its tools and applications.
This also falls into the domain of IT and Logistics
where the objective is to create a solid platform of efficient
and innovative technology to assist in the realization of
AIBA Boxing News 1 - February-March 07
the ultimate aim - the improvement of the sport of boxing
worldwide.
Games
The Games Department manages all matters related to
tournaments, including technical and refereeing aspects.
With the countdown to the Olympics already in full swing
the Games Department plays a crucial role in the coordination
of all the qualifying events on top of AIBA’s most
prestigious event, the World Championships.
Marketing
Without revenue there is no growth so the Marketing Department
has a crucial role to play in the development of
our sport. In collaboration with the PR and Communications
Department, marketing will enhance the brand value
of boxing and AIBA through the creation of revolutionary
properties.
First delivery eminent from
Swiss Timing
The first AIBA scoring systems were on time to be delivered
early April to the federations of Madagascar, Trinidad
& Tobago and Samoa in time for their respective
events in the same month.
Madagascar is hosting an African Championships
Qualifier Zone 7, from April 13-15, while a Pre-American
Eliminatory tournament will be held in the Port of
Spain on the same days and the Oceania Continental
Championships will be held in Apia from April 22-29.
AIBA signed a contract with Swiss Timing in February
for the provision of AIBA scoring systems to all federations.
The order of delivery will be drawn up with preference
to the federations who have responded to the IOC
Fund Distribution survey.
Swiss Timing will provide a three-day seminar on delivery
of the machine in order for Continental technicians/
operators to be fully briefed on its functionality.
Licensees
The International Boxing Association (AIBA) is extremely
proud to announce that following an intensive research
process, AIBA headquarters has narrowed down its selection
of AIBA licensees to three of the world’s market leaders
in sporting equipment – Everlast, Top Ten and Adidas.
The subsequent step in the confirmation of AIBA licensees
will include the finalisation of an agreement between
AIBA and three of boxing’s biggest brands, which will see
all three licensees provide an extensive range of boxing
equipment to the global boxing family.
Top reaction to IOC Fund
questionnaire
The response to the IOC Fund questionnaire has been
very encouraging with the AIBA headquarters receiving a
number of quick replies as soon as the questionnaire was
sent in January.
Each response is being acted upon with the priority going
to those federations with the greatest urgency. Those
federations who have not replied can still send their responses
to info@aiba.org.
Oxford-Cambridge race in the rings
Not only is the rowing contest between the Cambridge and
Oxford Universities a highlight on the yearly sporting calendar
but the annual showdown in the boxing ring also
holds pride of place, and there was no better example than
when the 100 th Varsity boxing Match was held at the York
Hall in London’s Bethnal Green in front of vociferous support
in March.
An incredible atmosphere marked a magic event between
the two scholar powerhouses, which saw the Oxford University
Amateur Boxing Club edge the Cambridge University
Amateur Boxing Club five matches to four to retain
the Truelove Bowl. For the record, Cambridge University
still leads the overall victory tally 49-47 with four contests
ending in a draw.
Victory for Dr. Obreja in Romania
The Romanian Boxing Federation held an Extraordinary
General Assembly in January and elected the sitting President
Dr. Rudel Obreja as the President when he received
108 out of the 110 valid votes.
It was a significant victory for the AIBA Executive Committee
member and Chairman of the AIBA Technical and
Rules Commission considering the Romanian Court’s
removed any doubt and criticism surrounding
his leadership.
RINGSIDE 2006 Asian Games
The Asian Games in Doha in December was proof
that Boxing had made an excellent start in its
effort to be open, transparent and fair under the
new leadership of AIBA President Ching-Kuo Wu.
Heavyweight gold to Iran’s Ali Mazaheri
symbolized a refreshing new era
for boxing. The 12-day competition
was successfully completed without a
single dispute for the first time in the
history of the sport. The draw for officials
for each bout was conducted in
full view of spectators and team members,
while the open scoring system
allowed for all 181 bouts to be judged
with no political pressure or outside
interference.
to seven countries in 11 weight
Bright future
ahead
for Romania’s
favourite son
An athlete’s path into the boxing ring takes
many routes but for Romania’s Ciocan Cristian,
it is what lies ahead which is most important.
A young Cristian first made his foray
into the sporting arena as a basketball
player, however, while still at school,
the lanky teenager was spotted in
the gymnasium by boxing coach Mr.
Felix Paun, who immediately saw the
immense potential of the kid from
Galati City,
On joining the Bute Galati Boxing Club,
Cristian thrived under the guidance
of Paun and it wasn’t long after that
at the age of 16, Cristian came to the
pivotal decision to make a carrier out
of boxing.
Paun’s expert eye paid immediate
dividends. One year after joining his
stable, Cristian had a silver medal
to his name at the national junior
championships.
One year later he became the national
junior champion before going on
to claim gold in the +91kg weight
category at the 2006 Junior World
Championship in Agadir, Morocco
in September. This stunning victory
opened Cristian’s path towards his
dream to become Olympic champion.
In Morocco there were doubts
surrounding whether Cristian could
reach the top step on the podium, but
his dedication, hard training ethic
and not to mention his gifted talent,
would ensure that he would have the
last word.
“I love boxing for the fact that it
represents who I am,” he said. “The
ring gives me the perfect environment
to show the skills that I have and
boxing has given me a great carrier
where I can be successful and travel
the world, doing a sport I love.”
Having witnessed his confidence and
performance in the ring, there can’t
be too many who now doubt Cristian’s
capability of going on to win Olympic
gold in 2008.
Women’s Profile
Sparring with...
Ariane Fortin
2006 Women’s World Champion
in the 70 kg class
l Why did you start boxing?
The reason why I started boxing is a
little cliché: When I was 16-years-old,
I saw the movie “Girlfight”, which is
about a girl, a little rebel, who lives in
the Bronx (New York) and starts boxing.
In that time, I was a little rebel
myself and I thought boxing simply
looked fun and cool and, at that
time, two male friends of mine were
already boxing so I started going to
the gym with them just to try it out. In
the beginning, I just really liked the
sport. I enjoyed training and I was not
planning or even imagining having a
boxing career. It just went slowly from
one fight to another and then onto
provincials, nationals, etc.
l What did your parents think
about you boxing?
In the beginning my parents wouldn’t
allow me to do official fights. Like
many other parents, they thought
it was too dangerous but after two
months, I quit smoking. They were
beginning to see that I really enjoyed
it and that I was serious about it so
they agreed to let me do a demonstration
fight before the real thing.
l Why do you box?
Competition and adrenaline is a big
part of the fun, but I also like the
healthy lifestyle of boxing. Plus, the
AIBA Boxing News 1 - February-March 07
sport forces you to make sacrifices
- with your diet for example. I think
that the discipline you develop in the
sport can be applied to the rest of your
life. When you develop yourself as an
athlete, you also develop as an individual.
The qualities that you need
in sport (discipline, confidence, will),
can be used in your everyday life. I
think that, over and above the medals,
is a very important thing that
boxing gives me.
l What was the best moment
of your career?
The best moment was for sure when
I beat Olga Slovinskaya (Russia) at
the World Championships last year.
I had lost to her in the finals at the
last World Championships in Russia
in 2005. All year, I really worked for
her. She has an unusual style and she
is physically strong. She is actually
the strongest opponent I have had in
my career. So I practised a lot against
her style and I worked harder on my
muscle development. It really made a
difference to my performance the second
time that I faced her. It was well
worth the effort!
l What was the worst moment
of your career?
Losing to Olga Slovinskaya at the WCH
in Russia in 2005, she stopped me on
points. It was the first time that I had
been stopped.
l What are your career goals?
For the moment, my objective is to be
world champion a second time because
no Canadian girl has done that
yet. I know that when you are first,
the other girls are all studying your
style, trying to work you out, the same
way I did for the Russian champ. So
I want to stay focused on training
and do well again at the next Worlds.
Moreover, I’d love to participate in
the Olympic Games. I’m hoping really
strongly that women’s boxing will
be there in 2012. Then, I would like
to turn pro. I don’t know if I want to
make a long pro career, but I want to
try it for sure. But for the moment, I
think that amateur boxing is much
more interesting because we do more
than one fight in a same weekend and
we travel, so I want to continue doing
that for a while.
l What is your worst fear in
boxing?
Light Boxing –
A sport for everyone
The modern life, competitive
and stressful
as it is nowadays, leads
us to seek new ways to
improve the quality of
our lives.
The executive of big companies, the
liberal professional and the general
public are searching more and more
for ways to relieve tension, whilst improving
their general health, and boxing
is one of the most common strategies
utilized.
A public minority has the idea that
boxing is a ‘violent’ sport, however,
this is starting to change through Olympic
boxing, thanks to its extensive
form of protection.
It is well-known that the preoccupation
of people with high degrees of
competitiveness and professional
responsibility would like to practise
boxing, without suffering physical
damage to their esthetic, as well as
their general, well-being.
It is wise to point out that the age
group that has looked for this option
is getting higher by the day, between
35-70 years. Older people practising
this sport do exist, with the advent of
the medical release.
These days, women have also been
submitted to the same conditions of
work and stress; and consequently
have found pleasure in the practise of
boxing.
From the orthopedics stand-point, it
is important to have a good warm-up,
around 15 to 20 minutes, with a prolonged
session, around 20 to 30 minutes,
for the stretching and flexibility
exercises, taking into consideration
that a greater stiffness in the tendons
and muscles exists with people of a
more advanced age, especially at the
beginning of the session. In this initial
stage it is important to rehearse the
moves that relate to the sport, especially
for those who have never practised
boxing; such as swirls, punches
and torso movements, etc.
These movements gradually gain in
intensity, speed and strength, always
considering the age and technical level
of each practitioner.
By Bernardino Santi (AIBA
Medical Commission member and
chief of the Brazil Boxing Federation
medical department)
and Ana Paula Rennó Sierra
(Coach and Brazil Boxing Federation
member).
This practice must be done with
gloves, which for this style should
be bigger, from 15 to 17 ounces, and
softer than the norm and are already
available on the market.
The head protector, softer and offering
more protection, will be used in
any activity that involves contact with
an opponent.
The shoes, preferably, will be specific
to boxing, however the use of a sneaker
with good shock absorption is also
satisfactory.
From the physiological standpoint,
those interested in teaching these
classes should consider the following
factors: Warm-up boxing exercises
should be the priority with particular
focus on the muscle group, therefore
the first phase should have emphasis
on the muscular strength and resistance
with exercises that are complimentary
to boxing.
The level of conditioning and physical
capabilities of the student should be
considered at the start of the activity.
The class should be 30 to 45 minutes
for beginners and from 45 to 60 minutes
for advanced students, taking
into consideration it is a class geared
for any age group and level of training,
with no set age group, always under
surveillance and observation of a
physical education professional.
The objectives of this class are to: alleviate
stress, increase the amount of
calories burnt, change physical composition,
increase strength and muscular
mass, socialize and provide an
outlet for the natural competitiveness
of people.
As a competitive format, according to
age, it is suggested:
l Under 35 years - Four rounds of
two minutes with one minute of
rest.
l 35 to 45 years - Four rounds of
one minute 30 seconds with one
minute of rest.
l 45 to 50 years - Four rounds of
one minute with one minute 30
seconds of rest.
l 50 to 60 years - Three rounds of
one minute with one minute 30
seconds of rest.
l 60 to 70 years - Three rounds of
one minute with two minutes of
rest.
l Above 70 years - Three rounds
of 45 seconds with two minutes of
rest.
Depending on the degree of activity
and training time there are exceptions
in which athletes of a higher
age group can practice in a lower age
group. There are four basic categories
matching weight and degree of training,
with the age group:
Light - below 60 kg.
Medium - from 61 to 75 kg.
Medium Heavy - from 76 to 85 kg.
Heavy - above 86 kg.
Consideration must be taken of the
number of participants that exist. It is
worthwhile mentioning that pre-existent
pathological conditions should be
taken into account, without the need
to forbid the practice if it is supervised
by a sport doctor or specialist.
However, due to this, a physical and
medical evaluation has to be made.
le Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, a
du Comité exécutif que
«le grand travail commence
maintenant» lors
Trente et un membres venus du monde
nous devons maintenant les mettre
commence
Djamel Merzkani, Jorge Vazquez-Monroy, Ho Kim, Xavier
Lambercy, Richard Baker
AIBA Boxing News 1 - Février-Mars 07
Jeux
L’or de Pékin
boxe.
En ayant observé sa confiance dans le
ring, peu de gens peuvent encore douter
de la capacité de Cristian à remporter
l’or olympique en 2008.
Ariane Fortin
etc.
l Que pensent vos parents
de la boxe?
Au début, mes parents ne me permettaient
pas de participer à des combats
officiels.
AIBA Boxing News 1 - Février-Mars 07
J’avais perdu contre
elle en finale lors du dernier Championnat
du monde en Russie en 2005.
Toute l’année, je me suis préparée
pour elle. Elle a un style inhabituel
et est physiquement forte. Elle est actuellement
la plus forte rivale que j’ai
eue.
