The Seed Potato Industry in New Brunswick
The export of New Brunswick seed potatoes has a long history, dating back to the mid 1930s.
Coordinated efforts between growers, industry representatives, Provincial and Federal Governments
have led New Brunswick’s seed potato industry to become one of the largest exporting provinces of seed
potatoes in Canada.
Our seed potato production program begins with nuclear stock plantlets. The Plant Propagation Centre,
located in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and operated by the New Brunswick Department of Agriculture,
Aquaculture and Fisheries, supplies the majority of production needs of Nuclear stock material. The
Canadian Potato Variety Repository, also located at the Plant Propagation Centre, provides timely access
to a collection of commercial potato varieties from North American breeding programs as well as a
number of promising new seedlings.
Greenhouse tuber Nuclear stock material is produced at the provincial Bon Accord Elite Seed Potato
Centre located at Bon Accord, New Brunswick and at a number of private greenhouse production
facilities. The Bon Accord Elite Seed Potato Centre also produces Pre-Elite and Elite 1 class seed
potatoes which are distributed to selected producers for further multiplication of subsequent field
generations.
New Brunswick growers make use of post-harvest tests, either the Florida winter grow-out or laboratory
testing, to verify quality and ensure seedlots meet specific market requirements. Testing for viruses,
bacterial ring rot and potato spindle tuber viroid can be carried out provincially by the Agricultural
Certification Services (ACS) Inc. The ACS laboratory is operated by Potatoes New Brunswick and is
accredited by the CFIA.
