Stage 4: WALK TO HEEL
Objective
That the dog walks alongside your left leg
of its own free will, because it feels secure
when doing so.
1. Position the dog alongside you and
tell it as you begin walking (dog’s
name) “heel”.
2. The moment that the dog extends
the lead forwards – throw the Discs
on the ground behind it. Do not say
anything.
3. Stop and pick up the Discs, say to the e
dog in quiet reassuring tones “there’s a
good dog – heel”
4. Repeat this procedure until the dog
realises that by staying with you, the
Discs do not arrive.
Initially, do not expect the dog to walk to heel for too long. 10 to 15
paces is suffi cient at fi rst, before releasing the dog with the words
“off you go”.
These exercises should be repeated either one after the other, or an
odd one here and there over the space of two days. Take care not to
do too much. Once you have obtained consistency on the extending
or Recall Training Lead, repeat the procedure off the lead.
The transition should be automatic because by this time the dog
should be responding to the sound of the Discs only.
