Stage 4: WALK TO HEEL<br />
Objective<br />
That the dog walks alongside your left leg<br />
of its own free will, because it feels secure<br />
when doing so.<br />
1. Position the dog alongside you and<br />
tell it as you begin walking (dog’s<br />
name) “heel”.<br />
2. The moment that the dog extends<br />
the lead forwards – throw the Discs<br />
on the ground behind it. Do not say<br />
anything.<br />
3. Stop and pick up the Discs, say to the e<br />
dog in quiet reassuring tones “there’s a<br />
good dog – heel”<br />
4. Repeat this procedure until the dog<br />
realises that by staying with you, the<br />
Discs do not arrive.<br />
Initially, do not expect the dog to walk to heel for too long. 10 to 15<br />
paces is suffi cient at fi rst, before releasing the dog with the words<br />
“off you go”.<br />
These exercises should be repeated either one after the other, or an<br />
odd one here and there over the space of two days. Take care not to<br />
do too much. Once you have obtained consistency on the extending<br />
or Recall Training Lead, repeat the procedure off the lead.<br />
The transition should be automatic because by this time the dog<br />
should be responding to the sound of the Discs only.<br />
