My angels will carry you to Heaven ...
At the dawn of a winter day in 1091, a young turbaned rider appears at the entrance of a military camp, carrying a message for
the Grand Vizier, from the Imam of Baghdad. After having been searched by a guard, he is allowed under the yurt of the illustrious
dignitary. But as soon as he delivers the message, he jumps on the vizier and pierces his flesh, screaming «Allah is great».
In a last gasp, the Vizier distinguishes the features of his murderer, already grabbed by the guards, impassive, the child’s eyes raised
to Heaven, and he is smiling ... In his head, the voice of his master echoes : « Remember, my angels will carry you to Heaven! »
Pitch
Nearly 1000 years ago, the first suicide attack in history took place, which shattered the mighty
Seljuk Empire in less than a second!
The sponsor murder ? The enigmatic and fearsome Hassan ibn al-Sabbah, founder Grand
Master of the sect of «Hashishins» — best known in the West under the name of « Assassins »
— who, to serve his cause, had no hesitation in raising the Quran on the altar of crime,
imagining the unthinkable ...
Who was Hasan ibn al-Sabbah? What methods did he employed to transform young teens in
real live daggers ? What did his disciples become over time?
What relationship can we establish between the activities of the sect of «Assassins» and the
terrorism perpetrated nowadays by Islamic fundamentalist… between Hassan ibn al-Sabbah
and bin Laden ? Are terrorist movements the result of the traditional religious institution or
political authorities ?
These questions will be answered in the film during a thrilling journey into the heart
of the East, the Seljuk Turks of Persia — first enemy of Hassan ibn al-Sabbah — but
also the sufi scholars and philosophers as Omar Khayyam, poet and full of genius
astronomer, wine lover and free-thinker.
Diving at the time of castles and conspiracy ... Crusades and Templar ... Saladin and
Richard Cœur de Lion.
Pitch
Intention
This docudrama offers the televiewer to discover or rediscover the story of Hasan ibn al-Sabbah, while inviting him to a profound
reflection on the relationships between faith, religion and power.
The aim is to explain the way mental manipulators manage, while removing the secret mechanisms underlying any dictatorship.
The intention is also to raise questions about death itself, the uncertainties of the afterlife, Belief, between reason and unreason.
Finally - and perhaps most important - the film will seek to show that leaders of terrorist movements are not a pure product of the
traditional religious institution.
A script where actors and observers of History meet themselves
The architecture of the film is based on the imbrication of historical fictions and documentary parts. Drama will be developped on
the basis of the stories reported by the contemporary chroniclers of “Assassins”, both Western and Eastern.
Documentaries footage, shot on various hictoric places associated to Hashishins, will be enriched by the testimony of experts.
Historians, politicians, theologians, Islamic scholars, psychiatrists specialists in mental manipulation will shed new light on this
episod of History, though often unrecognized, and subject to numerous controversies. They will also compair the past and current
different ways of terrorism.
The film will be organized into 4 parts :
1. The broken dream of a genius
2. The reconquest between reason and unreason, real facts and fiction
3. Along the path of Hassan’s disciples
4. Terrorism and Religion : the same battle ?
Intention
3. Sur le chemin des disciples d’Hassan
4. Terrorisme et Religion : même combat ?
Look at the current world, in the light of past !
At the turn of the millennium, suicide operations and their attendant atrocities in the name of God has left a new imprint on
conflicts in the world.
However, suicide attacks didn’t begin on September 11, 2001, or even during the last years of the 20th century to enter as a
weapon in the history of human conflicts. The process has existed since the Middle Ages.
In the 11th century, Hasan ibn al-Sabbah already knew that a soldier hides behind every religious man. Using methods leant
on ignorance of some and bloodthirsty madness of others, he really scared the eastern and western royal Courts during two
centuries.
At a time when terrorism is making the headlines of Newspapers and regularly shooting down Baghdad — the seat of the ancient
caliphs — the history of Hachichins (or Assassins) affects everybody. For it is the first representation of tragic incidents which
are reproduced today in different contexts.
The ideologies are different, but the political game is constant and the model is the same. On behalf of the cause, the end already
justified the means!
moyens !
Filming locations
For reasons of production, shooting can’t take place in Iran.
Therefore, SYRIA and/or EGYPT are heavily foreshadowed.
First, these two countries have got an historic link with al-Hassan
ibn Sabbah and the sect of « Assassins ».
Secondly, they provide interesting shooting conditions : natural
scenery and various arab fortresses —formerly Hashishins seats
— concerning Syria ; movie sets and opportunities for coproduction
concerning Egypt (EMPC).
